To become a successful Transport Tycoon, you need a rail network that is as fast and efficient as possible. One of the glorious new features of Transport Tycoon Deluxe is the signalling system for the railways, it gives you an incredible amount of control over your trains - much more than in Transport Tycoon Classic. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't divulge the secrets of the signals and neither does the "Advanced" Railway Tutorial that comes with the game - it merely illustrates an overly simple use of these wonderful additions. So here they are, the basics of advanced signalling. The first thing you'll need to know is how the signals actually work. Trains behave differently when faced with different types of signals. Consider the following situations:
It doesn't matter whether the train takes ROUTE A OR ROUTE B, it will still get to it's final destination. (How it gets there is irrelevant at the moment, we will get to that later.) So we put "two-way" signals at the intersection. We don't care which way the train goes, as long as it goes. RULE: Whenever you want your trains to be able to choose which route they will take (ie the closest free track), place a "two-way" signal at the beginning of each route.
This time we want the train to take ROUTE B as it is the only way the train can get to it's destination. There are other trains using the same track so we need a link to ROUTE A as well. To force the train to take ROUTE B, we use "one-way" signals at the intersection - this way the train will only take ROUTE B even if ROUTE A is free. RULE: Whenever you don't want your trains to choose their route, use a "one-way" signal - this way, they will wait until the correct route is clear, even if they have a green one-way signal in front of them (that would eventually lead them to the wrong place.)
Again we want the train to take ROUTE B, and in this situation it has absolutely no choice but to do so. It cannot go through the signal that would take it along ROUTE A as it can't even see the signal. RULE: Whenever you don't want a train to take a certain route at all, place a "one-way" signal so that the train will be facing the back of the signal. Trains treat this as the end of the line and simply ignore any track beyond the signal. Once you've got a grip on the signalling features of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, you'll be well on the way to realising billionaire status! |
