"Pretty Noose" was released as the first single from Down On The Upside in March 1996, two months before the album itself came out, followed by "Burden In My Hand" and "Blow Up The Outside World". It appeared in the DOTU-era standard formats: two versions of the compact disc (one in a box with a poster) and one 7" in Europe, and one compact disc in Australia. It also appeared as a promo-only disc in the United States and as a limited edition (300 copies) "Club Promo" in Europe (released May 6, 1996).

The poster that is included with European disc #2 is an enlarged version of the Down On The Upside cover art. The 7" is on red vinyl and is a limited, numbered edition of 5000.

The "Pretty Noose" video was directed by Frank Kozik. It premiered on MTV on May 6, 1996. An alternate version appeared shortly thereafter.

The track lists for the releases are as follows:

US PROMO CD

  2. Jerry Garcia's Finger

More music that arose from the jam session can be heard in "A Splice Of Space Jam," which appears on one of the "Blow Up The Outside World" singles.

  4. Interview with Eleven's Alain and Natasha
This interview segment is extracted from the spoof of Kaiser Keller's Cellar Show that Soundgarden recorded in Seattle in March 1996 with Alain and Natasha from the band Eleven. The full interview is available separately, on a promo-only disc entitled Into The Upside. As part of the show, Soundgarden also was filmed performing "Pretty Noose," and this became the alternate version of the video.

UK CLUB PROMO CD

The Club Promo is a limited edition of 300 (making it the rarest of any Soundgarden release), and comes packaged in a clear, soft plastic sleeve sealed with a large red sticker that doubles as the "liner notes." See the images to the left for details.
