LOLLAPALOOZA '96: THE FANS' REPORT
JULY 5, BARRIE, ONTARIO
gpapais@bconnex.net
Amazing fucking amazing. Well I guess I'll start since
nobody else has. After reading all the other shit from
other Lolla stops it seems that the concerts were very
simular. But I can't remember if they did a Doors cover.
I very much doubt it they did do a 10-15 version of
JCP. Ben was a character spitting at the crowd hand gestures
ETC. I saw them play here back in August 94 when they came
to town with NIN. I must say they were alot better this time
because last time they had technical problems.
some Metallica fans were a little ignorant but they probably
don't know that James Hetfield and Mr Hemmett are HUGE
SG fans. But Im also a Metallica fan. Didn't see Any SG
t-shirts only the Badmotorfinger shirt I was wearing. The
crowd seemed to like the show they had performed. Well go
if you can AFFORD it. I hope they come back for an indoor
show.

I just got back from the states were i spent my final day
at lolla. soundgarden played a very obsene set which i am
greatfull for . the one thing that caused slight discomfort
were the little alternapricks that have, ofcourse, been
huge s.g fans ever since the black hole sun raised its ugly
head. to all you little fuckers (and you know who you are)
let me say this: he higher you surf the harder you fall.
anyway s.g delivered what we all expected them to. eternal
life. i will leave the detailed reviews for all the kids
that bothered trying to memorise the set list.
all i can say is that soundgarden is just one more reason
to get out of bed in the morning.

A fuckin' right-on show! SG was fantastic! Sound system was pretty good. Fuck my head hurts.

Since Lolla was for me at least, a soundgarden concert I was in heaven. I can't entirely remember the set but Chris and the boys were right on with the selection. After opening with a blistering version of spoonman it just kept getting better. Since I was in the front row I got my share of bodies ect. hitting my head from the insane mosh pit. They played classics like rusty cage and outshined as well as a few lesser known songs off Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. Chris spent time walking back and forth across the stage with just a mic in hand getting the crowd either into it or picking fights with the anoying, bare chested, jock, assholes throwing water bottles ect. at the stage. The highlight for me however was when the set concluded and after Matt and Kim left the stage. Chris and Ben started into a very slow mellow version of Nothing to Say (off screaming life ep) 1987 which is my favourite soundgarden song. It makes me wonder if the band takes requests from the up close audience. The band left the stage in a frenzy of feedback and microphone stand smashing. This set was by far better than Mettalica's "Super Rock" set which I have seen over and over a million times, at least the boys in soundgarden know how to mix things up for their true fans.

I travelled fifteen hours to see this concert, and it was worth it just to see Soundgarden. Soundgarden kicked ass! They ruled the day! Chris' vocals were amazing, their set list ruled. I enjoyed them the most out of all the bands. Although Rancid was really good, the Ramones were good but too loud. Metallica was also really good. The Shaolin Monks was a really cool part of the show.

Drove five hours to get to this concert and it was well worth it (I live in Michigan). This is my attempt at a set list from memory:
Spoonman (opening song)
Searching With My Good Eye Closed
Outshined (Excellent)
Rusty Cage (heavy moshing)
Black Hole Sun (Chris by himself)
Fell of Black Days
Jesus Christ Pose (Excellent, my favorite)
Burden In My Hand
Pretty Noose (much better than on SNL)
Rhinosaur
Ty Cobb (crowd went wild and almost crushed me & my husband)
Drawing Flies (great)
Kickstand (more heavy moshing)
Mailman
UNKNOWN SONG-No idea what it was, must have been a cover.
They played for about and hour and 15 minutes. The sound was great and they
sounded better than ever. Too bad the bottle throwing assholes were pissing Ben off
so much. There were two Soundgarden tshirts for sale. A black one with the cover
from Down on the Upside and a light grey one with a weird little "thing" on the front
and the word Soundgarden with 1996-1997 tour on it (maybe this means they are
going to tour by themselves next year, I hope so).

Oh ya, almost forgot. For "Joe Schmoe" it was nice to be called a "kid" for trying to
memorize the set list (I am 32 years old). Also for Shroom, Chris had on black pants
and a "retro" looking tan shirt with black pocket trim and collar (no he didn't take
it off). His hair looked quite a bit shorter than when he was on SNL.

The show was awesome. I heard way too many times that SG was lame live from people and they just went through the motions. Thats all bullshit they put on a spirited performance. Chris was quite into the performance. It was a freaky scene watching Kim thayil play the solo to pretty noose as some crazy teen landed on my shoulders from about 8 feet up. Any ways the day was great the people were really cool and the set smoked!!

There's no point in repeating what others have already said... excellent. Good to the last drop. SG's set was (I wrote it ALL down, song by song):
Spoonman, Searching With My Good Eye Closed, Let Me Drown, Flower (hahaha... it's cool feeling like the only person in a crowd who recognizes a song...), Pretty Noose, Burden In My Hand, Ty Cobb ("I was smoking crack with Perry Farrell before the show and he told me to play this because it reminded him of Dave.." -Chris), Fell On Black Days, Rusty Cage, Black Hole Sun (Chris played this by himself), Outshined, Rhinosaur, Mailman (YES!!), Drawing Flies (YES!!!), Jesus Christ Pose (YES!!!!), Nothing To Say (Chris and Ben alone, with Kim accompanying on "beer bottle slide").
