The Music of Matt Cameron

And here is what people have to say about the music of Matt Cameron...

Something else...
Dylan McInturff (Dylan@ed.concord.wvnet.edu)

Everything else, more like it. Matt is one of the finest drummers out there, and he just keeps getting better. I feel a kinship because I am the drummer in my band, but I play other things and write as well. Matt is great at everything he does. Listen to the way Drawing Flies GROOVES! Feel how Mailman kicks you in the head and crushes you. Listen to how...pretty...Room A Thousand Years Wide is. Also, listen to his drum sounds on the new album. Damn near perfect. The drum sounds on this are up there with Steve Jordan's sounds on the Keith Richards solo records. This is not to say that I can't be critical: I still think the drums on BMF sound like plastic buckets hit with tennis balls, but in Matt's case, the drummer outshines the sound of his drums. His playing on DotU is magnified by the sound of his drums. Thanks Matt. Why do I feel like you might really read this?

Dave Miller (gwm@starnetinc.com)

Head Down. This song just blows me away! Especially the end drum part. I love it! And it even sounds good live. Too bad they don't really play it any more.

Something else...
andy (agems@ix.netcom.com)

one of the most subtle and incredible things matt pulls off flawlessly is to create and play a drum part for an odd tempo song and make it sound like a simple and straightforward 4/4 beat. i also find that he has an uncanny sense of dynamics. i highly recommend the work matt did with tone dogs. his drum part for no cry is perfectly matched with amy denio's bass line and sometimes i swear i hear the origin of the drum part for jesus christ pose in the song vexed at the vogue. btw - i personally like the drum sound on bmf. i think i remember reading that matt was not very pleased with the sound he was getting on ltl (at least the snare sound), so i would be surprised if he didn't play a major role in the drum sound on bmf.

Fresh Tendrils
tealy (tealyf@ix.netcom.com)

In my opinion, this is Soundgarden's most underrated song. It's such a simple riff that you feel like you've heard it before, but it's a complete original. I love the lyrics too, but who knows what they're about? ... I think this is one of the songs on Superunknown that benefits from Michael Beinhorn's "glossy" production. I've never heard it live, and I'd really like to. It would kick much ass, like all of Matt's songs do.

one of my absolute favs...in fact, matt has written some of the best SG songs out there imo, and i think FT is one of the most under- rated, along with Mailman...the man can write! we know he can tackle a set of drums like noone else can, but it is awesome that he also can write some amazing music...

robert st. mary (stmary@emich.edu)

It was June of 94 on the Superunknown tour! I saw them at Pine Knob, the detroit area show! Matt blew me away! He was rockin'! I remember that he blew out his snare drum and then his bass drum! During the time they changed the bass drum Chris did "Seasons"! It was great! The whole show was great! I think that Matt is one of (if not the) greatest drummers in rock music! He has always reminded me of Neil Peart! I would love to get the chance to jam with him on some Soundgarden tunes and maybe some open Jazz!

David A. Thomas (davidt@visio.com)

"Never The Machine Forever", which is a great song, has one of my favorite drum fills--it's the descending fill leading into the bizarre guitar "solo". It never fails to blow me away, the way it makes perfect use of all nine beats and provides the tastiest segue into the guitar part. Matt has plenty of fine playing, but nothing else gives me goosebumps the way that fill does. Awesome!

Mailman
yamacraw (cjtutt@ix.netcom.com)

This has got to be the most perfect song on Superunknown and no one ever talks about it! Cameron is a genius...can't wait to see him live tomorrow.

New Damage
Sean Mlinscek (jeffm@warwick.net)

New Damage is such a powerful kick-ass song. Matt is definitly a genius. "The wreck is going down. Get out before you drown."

Drawing Flies
Dorota Maslowski

Drawing Flies has got to be one of the best Soundgarden songs ever but as far as I am concerned Soundgarden has never had any bad songs. But getting back to Drawing Flies, the energy in it is incredible. You can't help but love this song. You just have to enjoy it. Matt is tremendously talented drummer and member of an awesome band but I am sure everyone has noticed Matt, Chris, Kim and Ben are only getting better. Soundgarden is and always will be the coolest band. If you can't love Soundgarden, what can you love?

Dorota Mslowski (Edmonton, CANADA)

I forgot to mention something that I think is very important if Matt, Chris, Kim or Ben happen to read this. That is that the music Soundgarden creates fills the emptiness inside of me and that their music holds a extremely important place inside. Thanks for making music a part of my life. I am forever yours.

Jesus Christ Pose
Heather Jackson (hej5249@is5.nyu.edu)

On November 15th, I was lucky enought to see SOUNDGARDEN. I was jumping, screaming along during the whole show. Then my eyes rested upon Matt as he ripped into the final song, Jesus Christ Pose. I was frozen in place, just stood there staring at him. I was amazed at his skill, his precision. The man blew me away. After seeing such a display of talent, I now listen to all of SG's songs and listen a little harder to Matt's playing. This guy kicks serious ass! Happy Birthday!!

This is one the best songs Soundgarden ever made, thanks! You're graet on SPOONMAN !

Mailman
Rob Chipman (chip9162@uidaho.edu)

Absolutely one of my favorite songs of all time. It has all of the great SG elements that I have come to love. It's dark, moody, emotionally draining, and has that vengeful feeling that really gives it a cutting edge. Ben's deep thudding bass is relentless, it just chugs along. Kim's classic lead is rising and falling in a distorted wail, Chris' voice is the voice of revenge. Through all of this is Matt's terrific snare work and of course that pounding beat. There is no other.

Jesus Christ Pose
Greg Egg

The drumming on this song quite clearly illustrates that Matt is one shit fucking hot drummer. How he maintains a beat like that ill never fucking know! Happy fu-king birthday Matt!

Fresh Tendrils
mark (sgmg423@memphis.edu)

I just have to say that FT is my favorite song of anything SG has ever done. If you (Matt) ever have another song like that on another album, it definitly needs to be put out as a single. You seem to be the only one in the band who hasn't declared it "declasse" to write hard rocking songs and have avoided writing MTVish alterna-pop. SG is after all a hard rock band,as Chris has declared time and time again. If Chris writes more dreadful songs like "Overfloater" and "Boot Camp" for the next album, at least everything you write will be top quality. Chris is a great songwriter too, but those two really sucked! Anyway, happy birthday!

Fresh Tendrils

Adi Kotzer (kyoav@parker.inter.net.il)

I think Matt's drumming in the whole Hater album is totally amazing, especially in songs such as 'circles' and 'who do I kill'. Besides, matt is my favourite drummer in the whole world,I look up to him and I love him,he's the greatest!I also love all his other work, and all the soundgarden songs he wrote. SOUNDGARDEN RULES!!! WHAT THE HELL CAN I SAY? Im an aspiring drummer in a band , and were just working our ass's of just trying to get a gig. Sometimes when you just sit back and listen ot your fav band (soundgarden) you cant help but want to go jam with your band. Matt has helped me and the band (medicine ball) alot!! I think that the song Mailman is one Soundgarden's best songs ever. It has a great sound, with the guitar, bass, and especially the drums. Matt Cameron did a great job writing the music for this song.

PenCapChew (Josh_Garza@teachnet.edb.utexas.edu)

Two songs that really stand out in my mind is Jesus Christ Pose and No Attention. I was amazed seeing him do the intro to JCP and the whole song, not to mention the whole concert. And also i personally think that his drumming on No Attention makes the song on how it is.. Being a little broad, Drawing Flies, Mailman and Limowreck are some of my favorite songs.. after seeing them in concert, he's my favorite drummer he rulez, what else can i say..?

Jesus Christ Pose
call me Pete (tappuni@visionol.net)

I'm no drummer, but i do know that soundgarden could not have reached their heights had Matt not been there all along... he produces those grungy, powerful, "take it up or die" gloom to the music, adding more meaning and life to the words and note... SOUNDGARDEN (and soccer) RULE!!!

Fresh Tendrils
eric stevenson (HIVbaby@aol.com)

not only did he write it, he co-wrote the lyrics, and another song not mentioned that he co-wrote is Birth Ritual, one of SG's best, w/matt's touch of perfection on it, as you will notice about all his songs.

Not so much something else, but one song that none of the people I know have ever heard of before, is Karaoke. I don't know the first thing about drums, so my opinion may not be agreed with, but in Karaoke (if I'm spelling it right) is the best thing I've ever heard from Matt. The whole entire song gives me an undescribeable feeling that compeletly blows my entire soul away, along with a few other Soundgarden songs. The best part is at the last minute of the song where Matt pounds that roll of drum beats in such a euphorically uplifting and powerfully perfect manner that I am overcome with a neat sense that could only come from the band Soundgarden.

I really love Rhinosaur, it's one of Soundgarden's best songs, so Matt has really done some fine work with the music. I also like the way he drums on Jesus Christ Pose, it's awesome to see him live (saw him in Helsinki the 15th of November 1996). Limo Wreck is one of my favourite Soundgarden songs as well, so I guess Matt's a musical genious.

Jesus Christ Pose
Jon Makofske (JonMan540@aol.com)

Matt, Jesus Christ Pose is my favorite song. The drums just grab you. It gives an edgy feeling. It's kind of violent in its own way. It must be hell to play that drum pattern on tour. I gave my friend a copy of it and he is trying to play it now. I "signed" your birthday card from i-music. Keep the songs coming. Hope to meet you one day.

I just started really paying attention to your band when I first heard the song Pretty Noose. I have to say, your drum work in that song was just amazing! Another track where your playing stood out to me was Burden in my Hand. But my favorite track on Down on the Upside was Rhinosaur. I know this sounds stupid but my cousin and his band put out a CD this year. The band is called Gouds Thumb. I don't know if it's true, but apparently the band has connections to Soundgarden. Matt's contribution to Jesus Christ Pose on Badmotorfinger was incredibly great. The music of that song is really strong and bold and is quite rhythmatic (if I spelled that right). But, overall, his drumming abilities and skills as well as his music accomplishments are greatly respected. He's a, outstanding drummer and member of so many great things; so many great bands. Evidently he shows that he has lots of musical backgrounds and styles in him because of the many different bands he's in and the many different things they do. Matt has so much talent and I'm glad that it was able to be shared to millions of people.

I have been very inspired by Mr. Cameron's playing. I learned from him the art of subtlety and how to outshine above all players in a band. The first time my ear woke up to the sound of Mr. Cameron was the song "Like Suicide", and what he plays is the best progression I have had the pleasure of listening to. It is sad when you hear other drummers play things that just don't fit and you wish they would reconsider what they are playing. This for me has never been the case with Mr. Cameron. I have never seen him at a performance but I have heard live recordings and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Mr. Cameron is one of the most solid, creative, and intelligent drummers out there in this era of rock-n-roll. I will be keeping my ear out for any new projects Mr. Cameron will due as I am sure all of you fellow admirers will to. Thank you for reading, have a nice day.

I just love that song... the rage that it has is fantastic. I'm potuguese and some of the word's may come out not good, but i think you will get the subject. Mailman talks about an anger of some kind. I did not knew that it was written by Matt until now. I also play drums(not like Matt) and I think that I can understand the music. Not just the lirics, but the real feeling of the power that the music has got. I can't express the words right because of the language. Mailman is one of my favorits, that's for shure. The album didn't have much of an effect on me until that night. My friend and I decided to experiment with L.S.D. I was just about to reach my peak, when my friend popped in a new tape. I didn't know what tape it was. Some song came on from the B side. It was the first song. The song got intense, then more intense, then it became so extreamely intense I had to ask My friend what tape we were listining to. That has got to be the best drumming that i have ever heard from one of the best drummer's in the world. Since i was 12 i have been listening to Soundgarden. I was very dissappointed when you broke up but i guess it was for the best. I will never forget the music that you gave to the world and to me. I started taking drum lessons when i was fifteen and based my practice on your drumming. Let me tell you, i am having a hard time keeping up with the way you play and your unique timing. I'm in college right now and everytime i walk to class i turn on my cd player and play like suicide because of the way the drums make me feel. When you play it seems as if i can transform myself into another person and be able to play it the way that you do. Unfortunatly i never had the chance to see you in concert because of my parents and when i was allowed, you guys broke up. I hope that anytime soon i can be able to see you perform live. Matt is an awesome drummer, to quote the writers of the Pearl Jam fanzine, "The best fuckin' drummer in the world right now". If anyone has heard the PJ live CD, his drumming on it is awesome, and if that isn't enough his drumming with SG is way better. He produces dynamics and just complete awesomeness that I have heard no other drummer play. He is so completely skilled, that you could get him on stage with Cornell and Vedder, have them sing while have drums as the only instrument and that would kick some serious anus.

I have read every comment on this board & i agree with them all. This guy is a true prodigy of the 90's.... as Neil Pert said himself. And as far as I am concerned this guy writes the law in the drum book, its damn near sicking! I am a drummer from LA.... I have played to near nothing else but soundgarden cd's for the last 5 years and by doing that I have already laid down a foundation for creating unique off-time signature beats similar to Cameron's. Not that i compare to Cameron's talent for the drums.. its just the beats i now create always seem to have his characteristics and traits. I can't get away from it. You are what you listen too! And I could not of picked a better band!! But to be perfectly honest I am usually playing Cameron's beats :} or at least trying to keep up! Its one thing to listen to one of Cameron's songs for months... then finally you have the beat memorized and your able to play the root of the song. That in itself was an achievement for me.... but to be able to make it up from scrath like he does is a whole other thing!! True fucking talent...... OUT

I picked this one because I figured many people didn't. This song is incredible, not because of any real technical display of chops like on Jesus Christ Pose, for example, but because of Cameron's genius subtleties. If you listen to the beginning of the song, you hear the guitar playing the double sixteenth note figure. The pulse is felt but when Matt comes in, he starts a little after where the phrase would normally be felt. He and ben then groove for four bars while the guitar stops. It's really awesome. Then in the first 4 bars before the guitar comes in again Cameron's bass drum fools the listener again. The feel is slightly altered for a second, but not disrupted. -This is the true beauty of Cameron's playing. I love him! -Cade

Well, Pearl Jam after 4 fucking drummers have finally "seen the light" and grabbed matt. The bitch about the whole thing is that maybe matt would prefer Cornell to Vedder (i know i do) and there is that small 'speculation' that SG might regroup!!! THAT'D BE TOTALLY FUCKING AWSOME!!!!!!

Matt Cameron in my eyes is one of the best feel drummers out there. When he plays, he plays with an incredible amount of feeling and a lot of drummers really lack that ability. The best part about Cameron is that he can really rock when he has to rock. But, then in a project like Temple of The Dog he can lay back on the hard rock and still blow your mind. Matt Cameron is the man!!!

Greg (g.gg@wanadoo.fr)

He really gives power and groove to the music, but he plays very free (like in jazz but in rock: its spontaneous, unpredictable, it seems to come from the heart, or just like a voice) i think he sings with his drums. Really impressive. PS: you can really hear the difference in pearl jam between him and jack irons (live on two legs) Matt is a million light-years away.

I'm sure we can all relate when I say that Matt's music has a spiritual bond to each and everyone of us. Whether it's the odd-time thing or his style or his gift of melody, Matt's music means many dimensions of love and admiration to each of us, respectively. When guitarists refer to Hendrix as THE man, I bet a lot of us drummer's and non-drummer's around the globe can confidently say that Matt Cameron the drummer is ultimate skill to which all other's will be compared to. I think what ultimately sets Matt apart from other's is his unique creativity. Thank you for allowing me to put these opinions down.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing Chris Cornell in concert in Las Vegas. He sang the song 'Like Suicide' during his show. Although Matt may not have written this song, it was still the inspiration for me buying a set of drums. After watching Chris' new drummer play, although he was good, I could see and hear how much superior of a drummer that Matt is. I would love to be able to get the sheet music for this. I know that I will probably never be able to play like Matt, b ut it would be nice to try.

I saw Chris Cornell at the Wiltern and it was an awesome show! I also agree that Matt's drumming is way better in "Like Suicide" than that one guy. I like the way Matt hits his crashes in this song. And in "Hands All Over"...fucking amazing!

There is no 1 song Matt plays on that doesnt amaze me, most all of them rule. For example, "Never the Machine Forever", where in the hell did that Drum part come from? Actually, where in the hell did that whole song come from? What drives me to listen to Soundgarden the most is the strange time signatures they use. I play Drums and for the longest time I was only into punk music. Green Day was my daily musical fix and I couldnt get enough of them. Playing those fast beats was like being in heaven to me untill I listened to "Down On The Upside" for the 1st time. I knew they were a band and wasnt into them much except for the song that was forced down the throats of everyone with MTV and a radio "Black Hole Sun". Some one had given "Down On The Upside" to my little brother and I started listening to it all the time. Eventually it became mine. Ireally started getting into them and my 2nd Soundgarden cd was "Badmotorfinger". After that I was hooked. All those crazy time signatures drove me nuts and my Green Day cds started collecting dust while I was playing to songs like "Rhinosouar", "Slaves and Bulldozers", and my all time favorite song, "Overfloater". So Matt Cameron`s style has been my biggest Drumming influence. The band I`m in, "Apparatus", concentrates on songs in strange time signatures and if you looked at a list of our influences Soundgarden along with Tool would definately be ranked high in each one of ours. Matt Cameron rules and thats really all I have left to say.

the way Matt play drums it's very original; we all know that when a drummer plays, sometimes it seems to be like 'he's just showing his skills and exposing himself', but with GREAT DRUMMERS this don't occur. Like John Bonham, for example, the feeling is that he's playing for the music, and not for himself or for his ego. He is a part of the music, even when he isn't playing. I don't know who wrote this music, but HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE GUITAR SOLO OF PRETTY NOOSE? THE FIRST TIME I LISTEN TO THIS GUITAR SOLO IT WAS WHEN I START REALISING HOW WONDERFULL DRUMMER HE IS. (and now that part of the music, for me is a drum solo, not a guitar solo)

He is just an incredible musician. His skills in improvisation, ability to pull off quick rolls, ideas and variety, and just plain solid beats that compliment the guitars are everything a drummer should aspire for. I've heard Soundgarden growing up and Matt motivated me to play and use the cymbals that I do. I look forward to his future work and ideas. 'Sides...I'm looking for some more ideas myself.

Happy Birthday. I have two of your drumsticks from the Soundgarden show at the Roseland Ballroom some years back right before they broke up. I play the guitar and sing, and I have been heavily influenced by Soundgarden, and your drumming, vastly beacause of your odd-time ability combined with the fact that you don't let it take over, and get too technical. You're like an off-beat John Bonham in many ways. I play a little drums, as well (not much good at the fill-ins, but I play thick, strong, steady, and in any time), and I probably sound a bit like you. I wish you played with my band, but, hey, you're a bit busy with Eddie and Co. Lots of love, take care and have a Happy Birthday. P.S. - I'll probably bump into you if this thing of mine ever kicks off.

The term "underrated" was coined to describe this song. It has such a smooth, mellow 3/4 beat. The guitar tuning is crazy, and it really lends itself to those intoxicating harmonics at the beginning. I used the tuning on this song (slightly modified, tuning B and high E strings to C) to write a song of my own. I ended up using this song for a school project, which my teacher (who plays guitar on the side) really liked. The tuning gave the song a real distinct flavor, and I guess I owe it all to Matt. He's an amazing drummer, and a solid songwriter. - civilian733

Greetings, pal, and congratulations for being such a good drummer! It's incredible your natural skill for creating music and your amazing vocation for staying away from too well known 4/4. You made me reconsider (well, you and SG) my conception about music, about drumming and about real ALTERNATIVE rock. Good for that!
