maybe its just me, but i've seen nothing but fantastic shows in philadelphia.
we've got a ton of smaller totally rocking venues. nothing is better than the
Trocadero and the TLA. the tower [where cornell is booked] is a semi-large
sit down theater with 3 balconies [yeah, really]. holds about 3200. when i
saw sg in 96 they mentioned how they liked Philly. many bands have. i dont
know, always seemed like a pretty hard rock town to me, especially with the
CBGB's-like history of the JC Dobb's bar [now called the Pontiac Grille].

oh, and woolworths went out of business.

have only headr like 2 song off the new NIN album, and none of the STP
one. The NIN songs are not the best of his stuff but they were decient.
But to say they will be no compitition to chris is a big overstatement.
I have a feeling no matter what people have heard of the NIN CD so far,
the masses will be out to buy it. It's one of the most hyped albums of
the year. I expect to see it #1. However, Chris will be a close runner
up i believe (unless there is some backstreet boys or ricky martin album
coming out since it seems they have a new album out ever other month.
hehe) I got a new job at a kick ass record store and they have been
playing EM at least once a day. everyone there seems pretty pleased with
it. So looks like all is going to go good with Chris.

Another new albums i have heard at work that i think should be picking
up when they hit the shelves are Supersuckers (out 10/19/99). Yeah not
to many people out there dig em, i could be wrong, but after hearing the
album once i already love it. So go give em a listen

I've got something to say about the show on Tuesday night: Alain, you are no
Kim Thayil.

Kim was probably rolling on his couch knowing that Alain was out there
somewhere, destroying one of the best guitar solos in any Soundgarden song.
I'm talking, of course, about Like Suicide. This is one of the parts of the
show that I don't understand: During Soundgarden's final tour, Chris
performed Black Hole Sun solo even though the whole band was there, and now
that he's on his own, his backup band attempts the full-on Soundgarden
treatment of Like Suicide. Neither one was very good.

Overall I enjoyed the show a lot. I find a lot of Cornell's new songs to be
too rock-ballady and not as challenging as the material he turned out with
Soundgarden, but they were definitely much better live than recorded.

To his credit, Chris has obviously spent a *lot* of time working on his
voice since SG disbanded. SG's live performances were often marred by Chris'
unpredictable vocals (e.g., the painful SNL episode in 1996) but Tuesday
night he was right on. Witness Sweet Euphoria, which may as well been titled
The Chris Cornell Vocal Showcase; it was perfect, and my favorite part of
the evening.

I'm not sure I'll ever get used to seeing Chris Cornell flanked by a bunch
of strangers, especially during SG or TOTD songs, but he's a hell of a
singer.

EXACTLY!! it bugs the hell out of me. the damn director thought he was
shooting an hour long music video. the little van scenes are pretty funny
except for the slow mo & fast cut parts that induce migranes. i'd honestly
preffer three guys with handheld cameras (plus the soundboard recording) to
all of those editing and camera effects. i wonder if there's anyone on this
list who actually didn't mind the director fucking up what otherwise would've
been a very powerful experience? little joe was awsome, too.

Has the Can't Change Me single been released in the US, or am I just
blind? I know the import is out there, but I have not heard anything
else about a single over here to buy. Someone just let me know what is
going on!

CHRIS CORNELL GOES SOFT
by Dean Goodman

If Soundgarden fans hope that frontman Chris Cornell's upcoming solo debu=
t
will be the son of ``Badmotorfinger,'' the defunct band's 1991 hard rock =
opus,
they will be sorely disappointed.

``Euphoria Morning,'' due out next Tuesday, finds the 35-year-old in a
decidedly mellow mood, with no piercing shrieks a la ``Jesus Christ Pose'=
' or
heavy guitar riffs.

As usual, perusing the simile-laden lyrics will probably lead to a headac=
he,
and grammarians will have a fit when they spot the tautological song titl=
e
``Sweet Euphoria.''

Cornell said one tune does date from the Soundgarden era: ''Flutter Girl'=
' was
written five to six years go. The song never was in consideration for the=

band, just one of many tunes he wrote ``just for fun.'' It originally was=
 a
sparse acoustic song but has now been fitted with new music, and it sound=
s
just as melodic as everything else on the album.

Anyone with a basic understanding of alternative rock knows Soundgarden p=
layed
a key role in the so-called ``grunge'' revolution, helping to kill off th=
e
garish hair bands of the '80s and bring a more serious twist to the age-o=
ld
tale of teen angst.

When Soundgarden broke up two years ago, it seemed the revolution had pet=
ered
out. The bands now competing for kids' affections, such as Kid Rock, Limp=

Bizkit and Korn, seem to adopt the cartoon swagger of all those vanquishe=
d
'80s bands. So was all of Cornell's groundbreaking work in vain?

``If it's entertaining on whatever level -- a white guy dressing up like =
a
pimp -- I think it's fun,'' he says with a laugh, referring to Kid Rock, =
a
double-platinum rocker from Detroit.

``It was an after-thought when we realized we replaced a lot of stuff we
didn't like, and thought, 'Well good, that's fine.' But I don't think it =
was
ever anyone's goal.'' =

Well duh, if you compare it to "Badmotorfinger." More appropriately they
should be comparing it to their last album "Down on the Upside," which I
have been listening to recently. It's not that big of a step from DOTU to
"Euphoria Morning." Sure, Chris does some blues and such on EM, but I
wasn't utterly suprised in the direction he was going. The reviewer must
have been "sorely disappointed" with DOTU, too.

I wasn't able to get tickets to the Fillmore show, but rumors persist of a
Sacramento show at an undisclosed venue. Tickets to that show are supposed
to go on sale on Sept. 24th. Hopefully those of us who weren't able to get
tickets to the SF show won't have to cry ourselves to sleep knowing we
missed our chance.

and yeah. i'm liking the album for the most part, but i'll had to agree with
seth on the balladry comment. i said to a friend a couple weeks ago, that at
times you kind of wonder out loud if he's kidding or not, because there are
points where its almost satirical of that type of music, but you cant be
sure... could be cornell humor, could be just him taking himself entirely too
seriously. personally, i've begun to think he's taking himself too seriously,
especially with the balls to re-do Like Suicide as a whole backup band thing.
while the entourage he's carrying along might be competent, i just cringe at
the idea of seasons with a band, and like suicide with any band but SG in
entirety. its like.... he took lessons from axl or something. get a new
backing band, play the same songs plus some new ones. but i am not
complaining about his looks, attitude, anything. the music is all that
matters, and i'm pretty sheepish about how i've acted in the past concerning
Cornell. we all are hypocrites sometimes, i suppose.

great to hear he's worked on that voice of his. best news i've heard about
this shindig.

And dont forget, not only does NIN and Cornell come out tuesday, so does Tori
Amos and Barbra Steisand. No chance in the universe cornell would make number
one. he'll be lucky for the top ten, really.
