Chris is all over the new Metal Hammer magazine like a rash :-) Here's the
album review. I'll put the interview/pix on the site soon - I need some time
away from this computer!
Deb

"OF course it s ironic. Or is it? Bittersweet Symphonies would have made a
much more fining title only somebody or other s already had that. But then,
if you ve read the previous six pages you ll know that Chris Cornell is a
tricky cove to pin down. Take second track Flutter Girl for example, where
our tragedian attempts to warn the titular delicate object of his affection
of the folly and peril of hooking up with him. So far so maudlin, only the
accompanying music is as uplifting and fragile as the title would suggest,
transforming the song into a shimmering thing of beauty. Fast forward to
Wave Goodbye and you ll encounter Chris painfully heartfelt tribute to
friend and fellow singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley, delivered in a style
eerily reminiscent of the late songsmith and perhaps the most upbeat tune to
be found on the record.

But then we ve seen this somewhere before. Almost a decade ago Cornell
helped put together the Temple Of The Dog project, an album-long homage to
departed Mother Love Bone vocalist Andrew Wood yet containing some of the
most inspirational music to have emerged from the Seattle renaissance. The
man himself admits to being unable to write traditionally happy songs but it
s blatantly apparent that adversity brings out a rapture that thrives in
its own melancholy.

Stripped of Soundgarden s metallic bluster, Cornell positively shines
throughout Euphoria Morning , his formidable voice relishing the space and
freedom afforded by the lighter arrangements. Think latter Soundgarden
moments like Burden In My Hand and Blow Up The Outside World (a close
cousin of Euphoria s Preaching The End Of The World in more than name)
and you ll begin to get a feel for the vibe of Euphoria Morning . And it
really is a glorious record; closer Steel Rain ranks among the many
highlights of Cornell s career and there s nary a wasted moment to be found
elsewhere.

Deftly avoiding the many pitfalls waiting for the unwary vocalist departing
a successful group, Chris Cornell has managed to create a sweeping, epic
album that, once you come to terms with what it is as opposed to what you
might have wanted it to be, is absorbing, moving and incredibly impressive.
Perhaps he knew what he was doing with that title after all. (10)

well i finally saw the video...on the window media viewer. anyway, a rather
interesting video. except that chris was in it. chris might even agree that
it's better to just have a mini movie set to music than to have the singer
pop up every so often. aside from the goofy, somewhat trite, cuts to chris it
was ultramega OK. the fire bits were a fascinating addition. i think they
probably could've saved chris until the end where he's wandering through the
field in flames. and what's that supposed to mean? he's a flamer? nobody
bother replying about that last bad joke.

maybe i'm just too mild mannerred but i didn't find anything so insulting
that i turned it off half way through. nor did i say "WHAT THE FUCK?" i was
guilty of thinking, however, "wow, that's a cool guitar. i want an archtop."

anyway, i just thought of this, what if ccm isn't about a girl but about
money and it's ability to corrupt. ok, yup i'm convinced of that now. it's
about money. just keep that in mind next time you look at the vid or read the
lyrics.

thanks

Uh, you're saying money tries to read him and need him? Cornell thinks
money takes away your darkest fears? I respectfully disagree.

Fire, yeah, fire rules! What the...? The video is kind of interesting,
but if they wanted to go with a cliche like fire why not get some
more T&A in there, too? I think this video has a higher fire/frame
ratio than Backdraft.

I just got to see the video myself. And being I have never been a huge
fan of videos I am neither disappointed or encouraged. It's just good to
hear and see Chris doing something! I do have one observation......Chris
has mentioned in interviews that he and Susan are trying to have a bambino.
Well, Mr. Cornell is going to have to learn some new tricks. When we
catch on fire.....what do we do?? STOP! DROP AND ROLL!!! Not run to the
nearest body of water(which pleases UkDeb but in all common sense just
burnt your ass up!!) Just my little safety tip of the day! toni

Aren't Nirvana and Pearl Jam grunge? And do they sound alike? If the
answers were yes and no repectively, why can't Soundgarden be grunge,
whereby Grunge means a seattle band coming out the early 90s scene? They
can still be metal within that grunge label as Alice In Chains are. I just
call them all rock bands, but hey, that's just me.

Alex.

Soundgarden can't be grunge because they ARE NOT GRUNGE and they DON'T SEE
THEMSELVES AS BEING GRUNGE. Now don't you think that Soundgarden saying that
they are not grunge convince you? Not every band that comes from Seattle is
grunge. Enough of this topic, because all that needs to be said is
'Soundgarden is NOT grunge!!'

Y'know it's funny (not ha ha funny, but wierd funny) but there seemed to be a
bigger metal scene in Seattle (Forced Entry anyone?) right around the time
"grunge" was hot n' trendy & most of the "grunge" bands didn't make it big
like PJ, SG, AIC, etc did. Good examples of a the "grunge" format would be
Seaweed, Hammerbox, Gruntruck & dare I say the Melvins? Just because SG, or
any of the other of Seattle's big hitters were from the Age of Grunge doesn't
mean they are the best examples of grunge, but perhaps were just part of a
musical scene as a whole. Anyone with a respectable argument, bring it on!

Howdy y'all!

Sommsters far and wide... prepare for a long ass email, beacause...

It's da return uda Queen uda Hedgehogz!

So anyway. Kind of upsetting about House of Style (more like shack) replacing
Chris' behind the scenes thingie on monday... there is no reason for
Christina
Aggiewearabrai'mabritneyinadebbiegibsonbottlebabyandyoubetternotletmeoutcuzi'm
ahorridhorridcreature to replace our Chris... Moving right along...

I got the Chris Cornell album about a month ago. Here's my review in case
anyone is interrested.

I think it's interresting that sometimes when someone close to Chris dies he
makes a tribute album. Ok maybe twice. Anyway, this one is all like, "Hi, I
miss my friend Jeff so much!" We do too baby. Thanks for helping put out
"Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk."

So aside from the tribute thingie... the first time I heard it (after I
calmed down about getting it so early), I wanted to turn it off. I tuffed
through it, and after that I kinda put it outta my mind, as if Chris never
had made a solo project yet. Feeling bad about that the next day I listened
to it again. It was alright. The more and more I listen to it, the more and
more I like it. It's got some soul, a little bit of blues, some sort of new
age slipped in there, and a slight country twang, and of course, my fav good
ol' acoustic rock. He misses Jeff.

I've let some people in on the excitement. A coupla people loved it, even the
songs I dislike. And then there were some that weren't that impressed, even
though I told them to listen to it at least one more time, no matter how much
they hated it. Some people just don't listen.

I really hope that the cover I got on my advanced copy looks nothing like the
real cover, although I have quite gotten used to it. But the back cover
(which also happens to be this weeks Chris Thursday "Picture Pages" thing, I
love Bill Cosby) would have been a much better choice than the ray of light
that is just bursting through the side of Chris' head to announce that he's
CHRIS CORNELL and that the album is called EUPHORIA MORNING. It kills me. All
the promotional stuff that my store has received, like flats, and pop up
thingies all have that picture, so I've kind of gotten used to it.

Ok. About Rocksha and the Clambake... you know Alain and Natasha, I hate
them. Who let them be alive? I'ma have to have a talk with that person. I'm
not exactly sure about their relationship w/Chris and how it all works out,
but I'm still guessing that they drugged him, and brainwashed him into
believing that they needed to be apart of the "Chris Cornell Band." Poor guy.
No, it seriously sounds like our crooner is under control. He's not giving
his all and it just sounds like he's a new fucking Hare Krishna recruit. He's
definately missing something, and it's up to me and Scooby-Doo to find out
what it is! I'ma rip off Natasha and Alain's masks to find Rocksha and
Clambake! And excuse me, wasn't it Bruce Pavitt ( I think it was, maybe it
was Terry Date, someone let me know before I drive myself insane, too late...
No wait, my insanity is broken it was Jack Endino!!! yay!) who said that no
one can do back up vocals for Chris, he's outta tune or something, which
makes him unique... Some people just don't listen.

"Can't Change Me" is an alright song, after you get past the music, most
like every other song on there. I think it's an ok single to start of his
career again. I didn't like it at first. But it's the first song, so I'd
listen to it, and it grew on me. And then to my suprise, I'm told it's on
KROCK's six at six. The six most requested songs of the day. Go Chris! <jumps
up and does spread eagle and has a perfect landing! she gets a 10.0> I would
have like to really see the video though... So Chris is flaming huh?
I wish that I had heard the demo of "Flutter Girl" before I had heard the
one on the album, but I think it's the only song I like that I like the music
for, besides "Sweet Euphoria." It's cute. But Chris doesn't need to be cute.
He's teamed up with Bubble from the Powerpuff girls. Don't get me wrong I
love them. But there's bubble sounds in the song and then "pssshew" sounds.
And they make it cute and fun! But I reiterate Chris does not need to be
cute. But he brings it down with some damn soul... So it makes up for it. I
like the song.
"Preaching the End of the World" oh lordy lordy lordy... Chris is all like,
"I miss being in Soundgarden a lot, so I'm gonna try to give a lil scream,
but it's totally not gonna work out, and I forgot to go over it and make it
better cuz I'm brainwashed" but other than that, I like the song. He just
ruins it with that shit. It's a sad sad shame. It's a fun song to make fun
of. Me and my friend kinda think that it's sounds like a cat dying, the sad
"wish I was back with that band that actually sounds good" part, and sing it
in our cat dying voices, it's a fuckin fun thing to do. Poor Chris! Naw but
the lyrics are really dope. Shame about the music.
"Follow My Way" it's alright, nothing special. Not one of my favorite
songs.
The vocals are actually really now that I think of it.
Ok, after those last two songs, the album starts to get good. It's kinda
like he's slowly starting to come out from under the spell! "When I'm Down"
is sooooooo dope!!! He's all in a fuckin blues bar, singing with his soul and
he means it. He's got the fuckin blues. His voice sounds like he was taking
some vocal lessons from Bessie Smith. Well, maybe not... but he's got some
soul! What a great blues/love song that is. Hot damn!
"Mission" is alright. I think it's kinda silly, because in some parts
instead of singing "I'm on a mission now-ooooow" he's all wanting to be
singing "I wanna reach
dow-e-yown, and pick the crowd up! <chris backing himself up> AND PICK THE
CROWD UP!"
"Wave Goodbye" is a beautiful song, and so bluntly says I miss Jeff. He so
perfectly captures the feeling of mouring in that song. Hey "Euphoria
Mourning". I just recently lost someone really close to me, and I could never
really put it to words how I felt, and this song comes closest to how I feel.
Ok, maybe I'm not that frigid and have been able to express that. I think I
meant that someone else knows how to put it into words, but better. Moving
along. It just gives me a warm feeling.
You know what, I think that Chris has been watching or reading too much of
'The Neverending Story', come one "Moonchild"? But Chris says flower and it
was always one of my favorite things to hear him say. That song is really
sweet, he sounds so cute. Once again, this cute thing doesn't fit the picutre
in my mind that I have of him. His vocals are really great. Too bad about the
music. (I feel like that ABC channel 7 commercial, "There's that news van
again" All you NYC peeps know what I'm talking about.)
"Sweet Euphoria" says "Yes I really should have produced my own work, and
just used a fuckin acoustic guitar and I'm such an asshole for not doing so."
It's just a beautiful song, and he should have just stuck to that foremat. I
said that as soon as I got the album. I said that this was gonna be the best
song (even though it isn't, cuz it's tied with "Disappearing One" and
"Flutter Girl") because it was all him. None of that rockinclambake shit.
It's naked it's raw, it's Chris, and it's beauty.
"Disappearing One" I think is supposed to be directed to us fans. Or maybe
i'm just too proud of us fans. Talk about how we'll see he never disappears
for long. I'd like to get so deep into the meaning of that song, but I'm too
delirous to do it. Not to jump on the bandwagon of the whole indian trend
thing, but if he actually took some time to see how it could have contributed
something to that song, and it could have been really fuckin dope. Don't get
me wrong it was dope. And Matt! Matt! The first coupla times I heard the song
I was like, "you can't really tell it's him, it could be anybody" and then
the other night i listened, I mean actually listened and I started to cry,
Matt and Chris were together again! It just made the song all the more
beautiful. And he finally figured out how to bellow/scream and work it into a
song without being SGy. yay! God, I love this song.
"Pillow of Your Bones" and "Steel Rain" kinda bring it back to that whole
you need to get it all done on the acoustic guitar type thing. They could
have been really great songs, but I'm guessing it's Rocksha and the Clambake
that had something to do with that. Especially Rocksha with her back up
vocals. I hate them. "Pillow of Your Bones" is slightly better than "Steel
Rain" for it's music and vocals. It's got a nice mood at it's best. "Steel
Rain" was just not the song to end on. Chris' vocals sound so forced, much
like on a lot of parts on the songs. This song could have definately done
with some acousticky goodness. It needs to be more raw and naked. He doesn't
have to hide behind the horridness of Rocky and Clamwinkle in order to sound
good because it doesn't. There is no need for a Chris Cornell band. He is not
Dave Matthews. The godamn Chris Cornell band is Soundgarden. Except that they
are the Matt Chris Kim Ben (and when we love to think about it) Hiro band. No
need for Eleven to beaver their way into this situation. IMHO the Chris
Cornell band should just be Chris Cornell.

So I've got my ticket to see Chris... and if on September 14th you hear that
Natasha and Alain are horribly and brutally murdered, just know that a little
hedgie might have just gotten it in her mind to take the gender-bending
Rockdaddy and Lil' Clam out of the picture!

Seriously, I'd like to meet some SOMMSters at this show. If ya don't hate me
and wanna hook up, lemme know. Same thing with the DC show, I think I might
be there too. Hi Maria!

It's a crying shame though, that "Seasons" is some much better than this
album. One fuckin song. Overall, it's a good album, but you know that he did
not give it his all, and that was because he's under some clammy mind
control. Good effort Chris, but we all know that you can do better. And
Natasha and Alain are not your friends, they're just the Puff Daddy and
Courtney Love of Soundgarden (trying to jump on the band wagon and get famous
off of something that died, that is).

So Happy Birthday to my favorite Soundmonster! Kimmy I love you! And a happy
belated Birthday to myself, cuz I never said it to me.
