Listening to Fluttergirl (on mp3, hah) and I gots to thinking. This is
probably going to be the second single on EM. I mean, why not. Its on the
Jukeboxm possibly trying out for comments, critiques, so forth. So, if its
going to be a single, they might *gasp* remix it. It is highly remixable, so
:) I'd love to hear Chem. Bros. do a remix. What am I saying, sacrilage!

Personally, seeing as though the EM list is set in concrete, I wouldn't mind
seeing something like the original Flutter Girl (From Stolen Prayers if I'm
not mistaken) as a B-Side to one of the EM singles. I think it would give us
SG Pre-Solo fans something nostalgic to listen to and the new listeners an
insight into Chris.

Hey SOMMsters,
On the topic of touring, I wouldn't be surprised if he did come to Aus =
at some stage of his solo career. If I do remember correctly SG did have =
quite a good stay (Read up on the articles in Seth's site, Aus got a =
good review!). On the topic of Seth's article archive, I was recently =
reading some articles, and I noted that whenever they are describing =
what's going on, the reporter never seems to know where Matt is!! On the =
topic of Matt, this is a broad generalised question: What's your =
favourite kit that Matt used (This is mainly to the muso's on our list =
but anyone's free to answer). I personally prefer the Ayotte he used in =
DOTU and subsequent PJ work. The snare has alot of power, and the bass =
drum & toms have beautiful interlocking tone. And the cymbals... well =
Matt being a big figure amongst the likes of Zildjian I spose it goes =
without saying that they rocked. =3D)=20
Oh.. and I was discussing with one of the BoomTheory guys Matt, and =
apparently he's scheduled for another live chat around November-ish. =
Don't quote me though. Oh, and save some room on BoomTheory for me!!!

Well, I just got my ticket for the show. I've never been to Town Hall, in
fact, I'd never even heard of it before this show. Two questions: 1) Why
are the tickets so exspensive? $27.50!! $35.00 altogether when you factor
in
TicketBastard's outrageous service charge. 2) Did I get a good seat? It's
Orchestra, Row B Seat 123. I know someplaces have strange seating
arrangements
where you'd think L would be the 12th row, but isn't.

You shouldn't complain about that. More than half the list isn't going to
see him, and would kill to be in your position. I personally would pay
hundreds of dollars to be front row center.

Speaking of which, Canuck SOMMSters, Massey Hall is relatively cheap and has
a LOT of seats. But I plan on getting Row A Seat 44. If someone tries to
stop me, I will keeeel you. :)

I'm on row E closer to the center- i think i'm seats 104 and 106 but i'm not
sure... Town Hall's seating arrangement is available online on ticketmaster's
web site. It'd be really cool if we got an opening band.... In February,
Silverchair came around on a pre-album preview/practice show and htey had two
opening bands... i'm hoping... but then rob zombie had none. Anyone up for
making sings of old-skool SG songs for the show? I'd kill to hear chris sing

Ok... To some hearing Can't Change Me by it's lonesome were
disappointed, and then some loved it. After listening to a majority of
the album... i have come to realize a few things for myself:

1) Chris is a bigger Genius than i ever thought. The album fargin rocks
when listened to in a whole. (many of you out there who have the album
in Mp3 and/or promo format know what i'm talking about.)
2) Chris has successfully gotten away from the "grunge" status SG was
placed under. The album has the same feel as Sunshower has.
3) The song Steel Rain is fucking great. Pure vocal power during the
Chorus.
4) I don't think we have to worry about Chris becoming a teen idol or
anything like that. I don't think the album will appeal to the young
female population, unless they were already into chris's work. Only way
you would have to worry about that is if all the boy bands died at one
time and every girl in the world completely changed their likes in
music.

That is pretty much opinion on the album. I think it's fucking great. I
hope you all will enjoy it.

Ok, I dont know where everyone is getting the mp3s and everything, but
I'd rather not have it now. I'd rather wait and pay 15 bucks than
download all of the mp3's, or in SOME people's cases, go ahead and buy
it for 70 bucks on EBay (or whatever that went for). I mean, we've ALL
waited since October of last year (original release date), I'm sure one
more month isnt going to kill us. Maybe I'm just bitching because I dont
know where to find the mp3's, but I'd rather wait and hear all the songs
on CD quatlity, hooked up to my PA System, rather than a shoddy quality
mp3.

My no cents.

Coulden't agree with you more. However i coulden't resist when i saw a
guy with the Mp3s. Even thought i got the mp3s, which are CD quality, I
still have to buy the album cause I love it so much. And as you
stated... there is nothing like listening to the songs loud as hell in a
stereo, so my computer is now hooked up to me stereo. hehehe. I know
where i'm gonna be the morning of Sep 21st is all i can say.

Also.. the thing about spending over $50 on the promo of the album is
kinda strange. What if you pay the $70 or what ever the higest bid is,
and you really hate the album. You will be out the shit load of money. I
don't even think i have spent that much money on a Collectable piece of
music. But if you got the shit load of money to spend on something that
you can get for $15 in a few weeks, give me the money. hehehe

I figured out why I like the new Flutter Girl, while Fluttergirl was the
only Chris/SG song I ever actively disliked. While the singing of the
original was probably an honest reflection of Chris's mood on the subject at
the time, I prefer the singing and overall sound of the new version. It's the
attitude change that I percieve that makes the new one less noxious and much
more enjoyable.
In the original, a musical version of saying "Stay away from me, baby, I'm no
good for you", he seems to be beckoning at the same time as he's warning --
we know what effect telling a girl "you can't handle me" will have on her.
Um...she's not gonna go away! At the very best his attitude is a resigned
"this has happened before, this will happen again" passiveness, relieving
whatever guilt he might feel with the thought "well, I Warned her!"
In Flutter Girl, as best as I can make out, (my Realplayer suffers from
congestion and always needs to be buffered--I wish it would get rid of it's
damned cold already! ;-) ) the spirit seems more lighthearted --like this
situation is something he is more emotionally distanced from, like he can be
bemused, rather than compelled by it now. And, very importantly, it sounds
like he's truly blowing her off, rather than making a show of trying.
I think the name change is significant. Fluttergirl is naming, describing,
slightly dehumanizing her. And the song is basically his reaction to a
Fluttergirl type. Flutter Girl is a call to action-- he really Is telling her
to fly away this time. Now he's taking responsibility.
Sounds much better to me.

The demo version was very serious-like. The new version is flirty. Like if
the old version were put to video, he'd be brooding in a corner and the girl
would run off sobbing. In the video of the new version, they'd both be
smiling and flirting.

The way I see it, the new version is even more serious. Look at the chorus,
maybe its more upbeat, but it's in a minor key so its sad sounding, and
there's a bunch of really weird chord changes, i think its phat. i prefer
the new chorus, but i also like the old verses better. i think the addition
of the interlude was a nice touch to, and the solo in the original was
kinda...oh i don't know it just kinda bothered me

From: Justin NICHOLLS <j.nicholls@UQ.NET.AU>
Subject: the sky is open and the drones are pouring out...(spoiler)

I have seen the future...

my girlfriend's stereo sits on this shelving unit in her room, a wooden
shelf set with the usual assortment of girl-type knick-knacks and photo
arrangements. I remember every single moment of assembling the thing with
her. it was hell on earth, tools not included.

her stereo sounds about a hundred times better than mine; jvc seem to know
what they're doing when it comes to component systems. not that I would
know, having never spent more than $250 on any stereo in my life.

this one sounds good, though.

you know how sometimes when you are looking for something to listen to and
you just throw in any old thing, some cd off the floor, hoping that it
might be what you want?

then there's the opposite, when you know exactly what you want to listen
to, what you want to hear. I prefer, when your ears and soul have that
*desire*. like a hunger.

when I pull out _superunknown_ I sometimes imagine my girlfriend's stereo
trembling in anticipation. come on justin, its thinking, give it to me, I
need it. the little disc tray is almost drooling.

when I pull out _euphoria morning_, well, let's just say that it looks
longingly up at _superunknown_ sitting on the shelf. I'm not in danger of
slipping in drool now.

maybe that's unfair. _euphoria morning_ has some good moments. quite a few
of the songs are pretty cool. I know that as a listener I should weigh the
record on chris' own merits and not against the memories of soundgarden,
but the magic just isn't there.

'can't change me' - "I'm the only thing I really have at all..."

it's easy to get sick of a song when it's the first single and the leadoff
track on the record. despite this, I'm yet to tire of it. 'can't change
me' is one of the strongest songs on the album and an obvious winner on
radio. the verses have an easy meter and the chorus is just that little
bit tough. until he gets to that "can't change me, no she can't change me"
part, which doesn't sound tough or convincing at all.

'flutter girl' - "cause I give nothing for free..."

a good, good song. the demo version mapped out a pretty significant song
and the album version does it justice. the 70s porn stuff is there, the
beatles reference is there, chris' voice sounds great and there is even a
pretty good instrumental section. josh freese also gives a way cool fill
at the end of the first verse, a fill very reminiscent of "the man".

'preaching the end of the world' - "and all has been done..."

first couple of times through I wrote this one off as just a poor man's
'blow up the outside world', and multiple listenings haven't persuaded me
to think otherwise. not much to say, really. the lyrics are okay and
obviously very personal but I'm just not inspired.

'follow my way' - "next I'm lightning..."

chris doesn't play any guitar on this one; it's all done by alain
johannes, for whom I now have some grudging respect. the opening mandolin
picking is pretty tasty here. this song also features more of freese
trying to sound like matt cameron (he does a pretty good impression, btw)
and some fairly soundgarden-like lyrics. I like 'follow my way' almost as
much as any other song on _euphoria morning_, but I can't help but think
that kim's guild s-100 would have been a boon. I haven't been able to
place the theremin yet, either.

'when i'm down' - "i'm always drowning in my grief..."

have you heard 'I want someone badly' performed by shudder to think and
jeff buckley? 'when I'm down' is kind of like that, but not quite as cool.
chris singing next to a piano doesn't seem to come across as genuine on
record, having heard him scream "I dangled from the power lines and let
the martyrs stretch". I think this song was recorded towards the end of
the sessions; the drums are by greg upchurch of eleven (are they still a
band?), which leads me to believe that freese had finished his stint on
the drum riser. fairly average, but johannes' mixing of the drums gives
the song some appeal.

'mission' - "writhe in your calm and provide your release..."

this song runs well in the sounds-most-like-soundgarden footrace.
'mission' also smacks of alice in chains, circa _dirt_. at the beginning
chris is doing this weird mechanical laugh, which reminded me of that
little dwarf from _twin peaks_. it sounds cool, though, not stupid. chris'
voice sounds very good throughout, almost hypnotic and certainly
portentous. the lyrics are clever and the whole thing has a shifting
rhythm that makes for a good waltz.

'wave goodbye' - "lonely and weary from this troubled task..."

a fitting tribute to jeff buckley. may he rest in peace.

'moonchild' - "follow the push and pull..."

I can't help but feel that this one is pretty lame. there's hope for it
in a couple of places but in the end it just sounds hairmetal powerballad.
'moon child' is the song I least like on the record. the song does feature
one of the album's few lead breaks, though.

'sweet euphoria' - "touched and broken are the things you love..."

now this is how the record should have sounded. no, that's unfair; there
are some well produced team efforts elsewhere on _euphoria morning_. more
accurately, this is the sound the record should have utilised more often,
chris by himself. I'm pleased that 'sweet euphoria' is here, unfettered by
various session players and eleven members. chris shines on this track,
recorded completely by him at home. of all the songs featured here, this
is the one that comes closest not only to real inspiration, but to
perfection.

'disappearing one' - "vanish when the curtain's drawn..."

well, this is the one that matt plays on, but you wouldn't know it if you
didn't read the liner notes. 'disappearing one' is a slow number with a
big chorus, replete with heavy keyboards and stuff (note that the music
was written by alain and natasha). the lyrics are somewhat average
compared to what you will find on the rest of the record. I'm finding it
hard to like it, but perhaps it will grow on me. the song is just not
very moving and not very interesting.

'pillow of your bones' - "I'm cradling the peril of my only choice..."

'pillow of your bones' is currently my favourite. odd, really. I find the
presence of the "eleven squad" on _euphoria morning_ unwelcome, but I was
surprised to find that the lyrics to this tune are a collaboration between
the three (alain, natasha and chris) and that the music was written by
natasha. by herself. all on her own. believe me, you could have knocked
me down with a feather.

the song is good because everything comes together well. 'pillow of your
bones' really attains the level of completeness that other songs like
'moon child' and 'disappearing one' never achieve. the lyrics are quite
good and chris delivers them in perhaps his best voice. I particularly
enjoy his vocal performance here because it is dynamic, he shows a range
of sounds within a phrase and sometimes in the space of one word. the
instrumentation is tight and purposeful. freese once again sounds good but
pales next to "the man". a very strong song and a true indicator of what
this group of musicians sound like at their best.

'steel rain' - "you and I and a million miles between us..."

remember 'boot camp'? remember 'fell on black days'? remember how they
made you feel? the longing and the sorrow, the suffering and the
heartache? well, paint that feeling across the sky and through the earth
and you'll have 'steel rain'. I thought the title was a little goofy when
I first saw it, but the song is a total machine and a great finisher. the
lyrics are as good as any i've heard in quite a while, making some of the
earlier _euphoria morning_ songs seem rather pale and expired. birds flap
from one headphone to the other, chris doubles his vocals in a way unheard
of since 'fourth of july' and bill rieflin plays drums a way quite unlike
anything from his ministry days. the song seems to fall apart a bit at the
end, but I think that was the intention anyway. it certainly doesn't
lessen the impact of those first two verses.

all in all, _euphoria morning_ is a good record. like most records it has
a couple of soft spots or parts that would have benefited from some more
work, but overall it is solid.

having said that, I find it difficult to separate this record from chris'
earlier work. while 'disappearing one' is meandering towards it's
colourless end I can't help think of how 'fresh tendrils' felt the first
time or how 'slaves and bulldozers' tore at my ears when I first heard it
live.

chris is no longer an angry young man. moreover he is no longer surrounded
by those men we know as ben, kim and matt. these things have combined to
produce this record, a record that rarely, if ever, reaches the level of
intensity of perhaps his defining moment.

and that is okay. he has done all that before. soundgarden does not have
to be relived in this record or in his future records. as long as chris
cornell is true to himself and makes music that makes him happy I am
pleased for him.

this is honest and genuine music. music that reminds me of better days
gone by.

justin

I really though that disappearing one and preaching the end.. were very good
songs though.
You can tell that Matt is drumming on DO (Disappearing One) cause its a
little heavier, more agressive it stands out more than Freese. The Music
and the singing were both together. I think it has a very complete feel.
Its one of the best.
Preaching the End.. sounded like a remake of a 60's love song that sounded
beautiful.
I do agree though with Moon Child that was the song I was most anxious to
hear and it didn't sound too good. It felt incomplete.
