I'm sure Khyaati was just trying to helpful but if you're going to flame him
can you reply to him only and not post SOMMS/Fork. I've already downloaded
2.7 mb twice, I don't want to download a ton of angry emails on top of
that.

thank you and goodnight

just had a though... the song is in MP3 format at 96 kbps. which is pretty
low quality... the song on CD will prolly osund a lot better... to get an
idea, find an MP3 of an SG song at 96 Kpbs (there are a lot of copis of BHS
out there on mp3), listen to that, and then listen to the real thing on CD...
its a world of difference

hey kiddies... well... late as usual, I JUST heard can't change me. my
reaction??
--> :( and >:\ at the same time... Chris was rite, it is DEFINATELY not
Soundgarden. I hate to be the partee pooper of the list, but that song kinda
disappointed me. I expected to be knocked to my ass when I heard it, but I
just kinda stood there. For some reason it doesn't sound as genuine compared
to the other songs I've heard Chris do. "Manufactured-esque" would be the
term I use to describe the sound of it. Oh wells... I'm not going to judge
the rest of his album just based on ONE song. I mean, come on now folks,
it's Chris Cornell!! That wonderful man who sang for our favorite band!!
Hopefully the rest of his stuff knock me to my ass...

On the up side though, hearing Can't Change Me has knocked me out of my
Soundgarden withdrawl!!! The second after I heard Can't Change Me on the
radio, I popped in Down On The Upside. There's always a positive side about
everything... ;D

I think seeing Chris live (for the first time, unfortunately) mite change my
opinion of what I've heard so far. Or maybe not... we'll see... BTW-- like
the ass I am, I sent something for San Francisco SOMMSters to the original
pretty noose and not the list so...

ALL SOMMSters WHO PLAN ON GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO SHOW ON THE 2Oth, EMAIL ME
SO WE CAN GET A MINI-SOMMSfest together!! : )

peace, love, hope, faith, soup

So what you're saying is that YOU don't think YOU are
right then. Okay then, we're in agreement, I don't
think you're right either.

Thanks for sending the MP3 to the list because i couldn't get it to work
either but this time it worked!

I have to say that Chris' new music is very shocking but what the hell I
really like it. I can see why most of the soundgarden people don't like it as
much. Well whatever just glad he's not dead and still making music.

I was a bit pissed yesterday, so maybe I wasn't making
a whole lot of sense.

I'm quite offended that people think the reason I
wouldn't like Can't Change Me is because it's
different from Soundgarden. I guess that's coming
from the same people who claimed that that if you
didn't like Days of the New it's because you only like
Soundgarden.

There's being different in order to make new and
better music, then there's being different just for
the sake of being different. Can't Change me sounds
like the latter.

There's also the question of is he really being
different anyway? Sure, it's different from
Soundgarden, but he's simply gone in a directon that's
more mainstream. There are tons of songs out there
that sound like this already, I don't know what you
people who say there aren't are listening too.
Perhaps Days of the New.

It's a pop song. But Chris has written much better
pop songs before, that were unique and creative at the
same time as being catchy (My Wave, Black Hole Sun).
I think that this new song is just bland.

The reason I compared Can't Change Me to Soundgarden
was because, with SG, here's Chris writing alive,
meaningful, soulfull, artistic, invigorating songs.
With Can't Change Me he's written a boring,
simplistic, commmercial piece of pap. It's like he
wrote it to get radio play, and I'm sure it will.
Isn't that what we call that dirty phrase? Selling
out?

Well, I'm not going to accuse Chris of that just yet.
He has no reason to do that and it would go against
everything he's seemed to have stood for over the
years. I'm sure that was not his intention. He's just
experimenting with new styles, as some of you say.
But look at the 'good' alt-pop out there like Jeff
Buckley and Radiohead. I just don't think Can't
Change Me stacks up.

That's just what I think. And let me tell you, no one
wanted to like this song more than me. People have
said they wonder if the only reason they like this
song is because it's from Chris. Well I think that
maybe the only reason *I don't* like this song is
because it's Chris. I know what he's capable of, so I
can't help but be dissapointed by this. I've just got
the greatest feeling of 'you mean that's it? That's
what I've been waiting 3 years for?'.

Then I read about how many of you others love the
song. I'm glad for you, I'm jealous of you, but I
can't believe you feel that way.

This is why I'm not really a fan of singles. In the
context of the whole album, Can't Change Me will
probably make sense to me, so I don't think I'll
listen to it again until I get a hold of that baby.
It's not being fair to Chris to pay so much scrutiny
to this one song. Although, the question I have to
ask is, why release this particular song, and why
release it so far in advance of the album?

I'm a little bit disenchanted at this point. I feel
like my favorite actor has just signed on to do a
romantic comedy opposite Julia Roberts.

Jay.

I forget who typed it, but someone said the intro to Can't Change Me sounds
like Wellwater Conspiracy. I agree. Compare the intro to the new Cornell
song to track 5 of Declaration of Conformity (Far Side of the Moon I think
it's called). It sounds really similar. Why?- 'Cause it sounds really,
really good.

Sorry to post 2 in a row. I opened Can't Change Me with my MP3 player and
Far Side of the Moon on my CD player and hit both play buttons
simultaneously. For those of you who said CCM skimped on guitar, you'll love
the effect of hearing the two songs overlap (Far Side of the Moon is
instrumental). Very interesting- if you want, try it out.

I do believe that this piece of music would have caught my attention if
Chris Cornell was not the maker of it. The song carried me . . . The
lyrics were simple, but, of course, far ahead of the "new" stuff on the
radio these days, which isn't saying much. Well, I don't know about
simple . . . they were far less ambiguous than the usual Chris Cornell
spiel. It's definitely a single, I'll give it that. It got style to tha
max. It made me feel.

Also, am I the only one who's noticed that that King Crimson has a song
titled "Moonchild" as well?

sommies-

So I've listened to the song a million times now (no need to name what song
it is :) ) and at first I had.. well.. no opinion whatsoever. I was excited
to hear it, but that was about it. I listened to it a few more times and
finally gave it a good run through- lights off, tv on mute, eyes closed.. I
like it. It's simpllistic, but so are my tastes as of late. It reminds me
of some of the better music coming out of seattle lately.. it reminds me of
SDRE and Damien Jurado- both whom I love :) it's a might poppy, but still
full of emotion.. then it occured to me as I was looking at the rest of my
mp3's it's kind of the same as goodness and carrie akre's solo bit. same,
but different. ..it still sounds local, which is good cause i'm on a little
(okay, large) local music trip, and I was a little worried about that with
him buying the house in cali and all. I'm content to sit and wait for the
rest now- that will make my mind up. I like what I hear, but I see it could
easily go awry. patience...

Subject: My little opinion

Well, I hate to say it but, after listening to the song a few times, I'd
have to say I'm disappointed and troubled.

I knew it would be different than SG however, I didn't think it would be so
"pop-sounding". I really can't compare it to anything because it just kind
of made me feel nothing. The lyrics are ok but, I think he could have done
more with the instrumentation. I'm not writing off his entire effort at this
point. In fact, I was reluctant to post this message, ya' know if you can't
say anything nice ... But, I hope that the rest of the album will be quite
different from this song. I can honestly say at this point, this song will
probably be my least favorite.

It's not the case that I was expecting a SG sounding song. I like lots of
artists, (Dave Matthews, Lauryn Hill, Chemical Bros., NIN), who don't sound
like SG at all. I just expected ... I don't know, more, from CC.

Also, some people were asking if some of us just liked the song because it
was created by CC. That may be in some cases, I don't know. Personally, I
think I'm MORE "critical" of artists I like. It's like I'm emotionally
invested in them or something. (I know lighten up but, I really really care
deeply about music.) I think I expect more from them so I wouldn't just like
a song because so and so made it. There are even a few SG songs that I don't
like, (blasphemy!), so I think "true" fans, (don't take offense), probably
make up their minds about individual songs or albums based on its specific
merits. To do otherwise would be insincere.

Well, I'll shut up now.

Monnica
