See? Do you see how many people support this position? Okay, I'm beating a
dead horse here, I just hope people will begin to open their minds a little.

Now that I've made everyone thoroughly detest me, I have an actual question.
I bought the 'Alive in the Superunknown' enhanced CD- type thingy, but I
can't get it to work on any computer, even after installing the Quicktime
software thingy. Can anybody tell me how to make it work? I'm really
computer illiterate, so I'm probably just overlooking something really
elementary, but I still need help.... any input would be met with great
appreciation, and a promise to never discuss the ongoing debate about
appropriate content again. Thanks.

Subject: Any Predictions?

We have just under TWO WEEKS until we hear "Can't Change Me" on radio, on
MTV, on VH1.....

How do you think it'll go over y'all? I am looking forward as most of you
are, so it's kind of hard to get objective perspective on what impact it will
have on people (Especially the smooth-brained, mouth-breathing Britney
Spears/Ricky Martin Demographic.)

Will it be a hit album? Will "Can't Change Me" make it a hit, or will some
later single shove the album into the spotlight?

P.S. I apologize for sending this to SOMMS as there is no Days Of The New
Content, please don't kick me off the list Seth!

Ok, I wanna clear this up once and for all.
You're right, this is a soundgarden mailing list and the post(s) =
regarding DOTN was completely irrelevant.=20
Those who flame me I understand, and infact I expected it.
I have a few more points.=20
First, if someone posts something you don't particularly agree with, why =
not just ignore/delete the E-mail, rather than write a nasty reply? I am =
guilty of the opposite, and have made the decision to ignore all E-mails =
I disagree with. Regarding non - SG content, I think the occasional off =
topic discussion wouldn't hurt - if you don't like it, merely delete the =
E-mails. It seems as though people are using this list to dispell their =
anger. Please try to refrain, I'm going to do my best, and I hope the =
rest of you can take heed.

Lastly, Soundgarden were the greatest band in the world, and Chris & =
Matt are my Gods. You al feel the same way? (Including Ben & Kim & Hiro =
of course) If so, could we please try to get along? It's like there's =
ethnic cleansing going on in our list...
Take care fellow SG-ers.

they shit on the rest of society. Anyway, just a new interpretation of =

Ok, sorry for this fourth excess post but it's come to my attention =
after finally sifting through all that crap, that there are 2 types of =
people on this list: People who have a love of music (And SG =
particularly), and people who listen to SG and nothing else. It's also =
clear that this list has no room for diversity - so I'm thinking of =
starting another list, with a more 'diverse' feel to it. Anyone =

This made me think of Mr. Holland's Opus (which, a bit of trivia here,
has one of Ben's sisters in it as an extra in the last scene. See if
you can spot her.) It also made me think of the times I have enjoyed
the physical sensation of the vibrations as part of the SG experience. I
recall being just a bit high one day, cranking up BMF and spending all
of JCP with my hands on the wall near the speaker, feeling the bass and
drums in the wall radiating all the way up my arms (my neighbors must
love me), and another day cranking up DOTU and lying on my back on the
floor for BIMH feeling the bass throughout my whole body. Bliss. And
have you ever put your hand in front of the speaker and felt the puffs
of air coming out? I won't get into the visual pleasures of watching SG
videos or looking at pictures (we all know about that), but a deaf
person could still have the pleasure of reading the articles and
interviews, which still bring me much pleasure and laughter. So, yes, I
would still definitely be a SG fan. Why not? Beyond sensate pleasures
they have influenced my life and my thinking. Those things don't leave
you.

That kind of reminds me of seeing SG in concert-- as SG took the stage with
all the noise and commotion of them coming out of the darkness and all it
was totally evident how *loud* it all was. Ben's bass vibrated the whole
hall.. it was totally enthralling to think that SG's music was physically
moving me and everyone in the arena. A whole new level to SG, and a whole
new little thread that turned out to do some good.. :)

Subject: kansas city cd sale

For anyone in the KC or Lawrence, KS area: 7th Heaven is trying to sell
off their previously owned CDs. This weekend all used CDs will be $4.97.
No fair taking any rare soundgarden before I get there tomorrow at 2.

I know we've discussed Soundgarden / Pink Floyd connections before, but I
was reading an online chat w/ Chris and Matt the other day and they were
talking up that influence. I hear PF in several songs (BHS, BUTOW) and
in some of those soaring guitar solos (like that incredible bend at
approx. 5:38 in Like Suicide). Where else do people hear the PF
influence? If you can't tell, Floyd is one of my favorite other bands.
(and, though it makes me cringe I'll include a directive with this:
please don't let this become a specifically PF topic. If you've got
something pertaining only to Floyd, feel free to email me individually to
avoid an incredibly irritating slew of backs and forths on list.)

Actually, other favorite bands of mine brings to mind what whatshisname
Guerinot (Chris's new manager) said about the sound of Chris's new album.
He mentioned that it sounded like radiohead which actually gives me hope
about the album. I'm hoping he didn't just grab a bunch of popular bands'
names and toss them out there in the hope of generating interest. Ono of
the trademarks of radiohead's music is its intricate layering. We have
heard that SG could layer (as could Chris individually, as heard on
seasons, Like Suicide acoustic) I can't wait to see what this could mean
on the new album. Though I've gotta say I'm not too excited about
Eleven's participation on the album. I'm sure they're fine people and I
have actually never listened to Eleven's music, but I didn't really dig
their influence on Ave Maria and (which was the other one, I forget.).
Fingers crossed.

Also, a request or suggestion, of sorts: when replying to a post, could
you *please* quote only the relevant portions rather than the entire
message. I'm gettin' tired of scrolling through 30 lines of repeated
text. Also, I don't know what kind of mailers they are, but maybe you
guys with the fancy html code in there could turn that off for the list.
I think enough people still just have ascii mailers that it would save
some space and time.

wow, what an amount of messages on last digest,
hard to digest...
Yeah, instead of posting stuff about other bands
and quarrelling, let's try to listen to the MAIN band.
By now I hadn't listened to many of their earlier songs,
such as Screaming Life/FOPP and many b-sides.That's because
the earlier albums are just out of stock in my country.
.......well did you laugh enough? so read on:
SO, my suggestion is : let's put more rare MP3-s on the web,
so Wooden Jesus countrymen could listen to them.
just send URLs to the list, P-L-E-A-S-E.
and many thanks to that guy who sent the URL containing
that six songs in mp3 format ( so I listened to "Sunshower" for
the first time in my life - that kicked ASS!).

p.s. recently I read a review of TOTD on amazon.com and
there was a one-star review of a guy who nearly threw the
disk out of a window when he listened to it.He didn't do it
just because there was "Hunger Strike".He wrote that TOTD
sucked a lot and wasn't worth listening to.If i could talk to
this "music fan" , I'd have asked him: " dude, if THIS sucks
so what doesn't?".Really I NEVER heard anything better than
TOTD,so it abused me a bit...

It's the first Floyd album, Piper At The Gates of Dawn.

Incidentally, as much as I like the Boot Camp, I've always felt Soundgarden
took their Pink Floyd homage a little *too* far on that track. Some of us do
remember when Dark Side Of The Moon came out (I still have that blue pyramid
poster somewhere!) If Noel Gallagher had done it I would have cried 'RIP
OFF!'

Hey all

I would say the influx of newbies is pissing me off, but it's more like
annoying posts are pissing me off, regardlesss of how new the posters are to
the list. It would be great if things were a little happier on somms...

aFter reading
>the postings from other folks on the list, it would seem that those who
>feel
>as extremely as you do are in the minority.

This list is a Soundgarden list. Perhaps there are many people who would be
more than happy to go off on another tangent with you, but it's not how it's
done. It works better, and it IS better when we try and stick to SG related
stuff. What if there were 10 or so people on SOMMS who loved soundgarden (i
refuse to type it in separated all caps.. what are we trying to do with
that?!) just as much as they loved bonsai planting. They assume that the two
go together - just because they feel the same way about them - hence they
refuse to stop talking about bonsai plants. Do you think the list would then
be interesting to people who are just after SG info?? This example might be
extreme, but it's the same as Days of the New. From the posts we've seen,
it's obvious there are SG fans who adore the band (Days of..), and just as
equal SG fans who hate them. The fact that the singer might look/sound/smell
like Chris doesn't make it SG-related. There are however other bands that
ARE related to soundgarden.. bands that former SG members are in for
example.

Nobody here is proposing turning
>this mailing list into one of general music discussion, but let's be
>honest-- how many of us listen to
>S O U N D G A R D E N to the exclusion of all other recorded music? My
>guess: not one.

Maybe not, but that doesn't mean we should all throw tidbits of our other
musical tastes into SOMMS. My guess is that this is the only list you're on?
If you have an unignorable desire to write about one other band, don't
hesitate to join a list for that band too.. it will make everyone happy!

>While it's true that this IS a forum FOR S O U N D G A R D E N
>enthusiasts, the assertion that all postings should be DIRECTLY related to
> S O U N D G A R D E N is unfair and difficult to enforce.

Unfair? You join a SG list and you're unprepared to write about SG?? I think
it's YOU who is being unfair.. It is only "difficult to enforce" when people
like you kick up a stink about it. It is quite easy to enforce in my
opinion.

>Bottom line: givn that this IS a forum about music, if a drastically
>specialized one, all subject matter to that end interrelates in some way;
>you can't avoid it.

it's not a forum about "music". it's about "soundgarden" i tell ya!
Drastically specialised?? good lord.. Can you just understand that this is a
SOUNNNNNNNDGGAAAAARRRRRRRDEEEEEENNNN list and no one else is quite as bitter
and tantruming about it as you are. Sure, there is interrelation, but who is
to say that every band (even outside of Seattle) is 'related' to SG? i'm
sure you could come up with a lame example. "her dog's name is fluffy,
chris's hair looks like fluffy", but do you really want to stoop so low in
an effort to bring your favourite hip hop band into conversation?

Seth can, should, and (presumably) will police the
>ranks. It's not our job to do so.

What are you talking about here? Seth does police the ranks, but i guess
over the time i've been on the list i have noticed that most people fully
understand how the list works and help out with enforcement. I don't think
Seth minds cos other list members probably say exactly what he would anyway,
but who am i to say, really..
It's only "our" job when it gets out of hand.

>And if all of the above logic fails, just
>lighten up!! It's really not that big a deal.

Personally i think it's you who should lighten up.. You subscribed to a list
that has been established and running fairly smoothly in the same way for
approximately four years and you want things to change? Fat chance.. Join a
newsgroup. alt.music.soundgarden is fairly light..

>I'd really like to know what Seth thinks about this...

you're asking for it.. heheh

okay sorry about the length!

Well who knows what the content of the mail is without actually reading a
part of it. Who knows, the most irritating subject line could hold a
glorious piece of Chris news. Your idea is fine for mail programs that let
you preview the mail, but it gets kind of annoying if you get say.. 40
emails and 35 of them are rubbish. So therefore, i disagree..

One or two off the topic emails would be fine, you say.. Okay, say we have
someone writes a casual post to the list about bonsai plants eheh.. ahem.
And those 9 other bonsai planters on the list go apeshit and post daily for
2 or 3 weeks about their bonsai babies. Is it still
"okay"???????????????!?!?! and are we still lightened UPppppp?????!?! heheh
sorry, a little carried away there..

Um SG related content.. I watched the blockbuster entertainment award things
last night and saw ricky martin for the first time. If Interscope put Chris
up on a pedestal and make him look spunky (and convinced him to shake his
hips), it's fiiiinne by me (just as long as they get rid of those dancing
girls wearing scraps of material.. *shudder* Notice how the men are in 3

Your bonsai tree scenario is extreme to a fault. Bonsai tree
planting and manicuring has nothing to do with music (that's a common sense
issue). Days of the New has something to do with music, and the relation
doesn't stop there. The original posting was intended to draw folks'
attention to another band with a style similar to S O U N D G A R D E N
(which I type spaced all caps because I think it looks sharp, and pays a bit
of respect to the band-- along the same lines as the policy of the scribes
in the pre- Messianic era who would wash their hands before writing
Jehovah's name in reverence when they transcribed the Old Testament ....but
now I'm rambling... uh, but I didn't say anybody else had to do it that
way....it's just my trip). That, my friend, makes the issue directly
relevant. The folks who turned it into an unrelated issue are the ones who
started offering their opinion of Days of the New....

Good guess, but wrong. In any event, we all share a commonality in
that we appreciate the music of S O U N D G A R D E N... that leads me (and
many others, I know) to believe that our musical interests may run in the
same vein. I don't see the problem with offering up information about the
industry, as long as the mailing list doesn't turn into a free- for- all.
Obviously, the danger exists that this could happen, but proposing to stifle
the flow of information out of fear that it will is ridiculous.

Don't put words in my mouth. I never said that one should join the
list unprepared to contribute or exchange S O U N D G A R D E N- related
information. What I said was that throwing out anything that doesn't relate
to S O U N D G A R D E N is foolish. Folks, Chris Cornell's solo career
doesn't directly relate to
        S O U N D G A R D E N!! He's not in the band anymore!! Should we
omit that information as well? Bottom line: define the parameters that you
base your judgment on, and we shall see how fair your system of omission
is...

        Is S O U N D G A R D E N not a music issue? Did I not establish that
this list was specialized? Do you not see that by saying it's NOT a music
forum just before reiterating that it's a S O U N D G A R D E N forum is a
direct and glaring contradiction? "It's not a list for info about cars,
people, it's a list for info about Mustangs!!"
My assertion was NEVER that every single piece of music- related
info need be posted, and this is, again, where the common sense of people
needs to become a factor. I live in Seattle, so I get to see the 'Seattle
scene', as it's called, firsthand. If I find an article on Kate Cornell's
band in a local paper, should I not offer it to the mailing list? It
doesn't directly relate to S O U N D G A R D E N, of course, but I'll bet a
good bit of money that the majority of the readers would like to read about
it.
By way of clarification, I don't particularly enjoy hiphop music.

Thanks for taking the time, Koggle. I understand that most readers
would like this whole debate to end, but I think we all owe it to ourselves
and each other to make our positions known on this. If an overwhelming
majority of the subscribers back your sentiments, I will gladly silence
myself on the issue. If, however, they feel, as I do, that certain factions
of the list are being a bit closed-minded, then that needs to be made known
as well so that there can be some clarity on this topic.

Subscribers, make your thoughts known! Please!!

As a last note, let me suggest that change, however unpleasant it
may be, is a reality. The content of this list is not going to be the same
as it was four years ago, because circumstances are not the same... people
must not be afraid to change... "...if it ain't broke, don't fix it..." is
NOT an attitude that leads to progress.
        Later.

Well, I am going to have to agree with Sam on this one, I love S O U N D G A
R D E N and I would rather read stuff about them on this list but that
doesn't mean that I dont mind discussing things about other bands, you have
to grow people!!! I especially liked the comment on why you space out S O U
N D G A R D E N.

"S O U N D G A R D E N
(which I type spaced all caps because I think it looks sharp, and pays a bit
of respect to the band"

But the reason I do it is because it looks similar to the covers on SU and
DOTU. (Of course I forget to do it sometimes)

I'm sorry, I don't think I can narrow it down to just 10. I'd feel too
incredibly guilty about the others I left off. Soundgarden favourite
songs have endless possibilities, I think most vary from week to week
and reflect whatever mood you happen to be in at the time.=20

Sam, I'm responding to you, but posting it on SOMMS cause it should be
heard. You want change? I've been here since 94/95 and I stay on because I
love it. I don't want it to change. Seeing how you're new here and all, you
can change it. No one is stopping you from making another list. Go and make
it, see how many change lists. You'd be surprised how many will stick with
the old style, Seth run list..

Dave

Your opinion has been heard, and I respect it. Let's see hoe many folks
agree with you. Thanks for bearing with me on my stubbornness.

Sam

P.S. Why do folks always assume that the quiet ones are new?

Subject: Australian Fans...

hello all,

i'm sure none of you remember me (this is my first post in a good year
or so). i was just interested (with this sudden influx of newer fans to
the SOMMS list) in how many oz fans are out there.

i know who some of you are, but i was wondering about the rest. i think
it would be great to muster up some sort of soundgarden special on
triple j (on the j-files or something, or even on rage).

sorry for all those non-aussies who have no idea what i'm talking about.

in response to some of those curious topics:
<< Here's another one, does anyone think Ben/Matt/Kim/Chris should run
for president? >>
mansel-did you consider 'run-for-the-AUSTRALIAN-presidency'? they would
kick all over johny howard. oh and nobody flamed you because we all know
that sg ARE superheros :=FE
nice dream tiffany and thanks for sharing. not everyone is blessed with
such vivid images while dozing.

for those who want to know, my favourite song(s) for a long time has
been my wave and spoonman (superunknown is my favourite album) although
jesus christ pose has always grown on me and more recently i've been
getting into 'kyle petty (son of richard)' (from home alive) and the
'moby remix' of dusty (from down under on the upside). does anyone else
*love* kim's bit near the end of like suicide?

it would be great to hear from you all,

"feel the rhythm with your hands, steal the rhythm while you can,
spoonman!"
drew.

ps: was anyone else on the list at the 1997 perth big day out?

when the dotu cd came out where i live (in toronto....canada) it was
available to us in both the card-board box and the regular cd case right
off the bat....i bought one for me and one for my friend (i gave her the
regular case copy) and besides the case....everything else is still the
same....the insert booklet....the back.....

i remember at one point during the toronto leg of their dotu tour i
worked my up to the barriers in front of the stage....and being so close
up....my adreneline pumping from having worked my way through the mosh
pit.....i got up there....chris "passed" down a bottle of water to a guy
three people away from me....ben started plucking away at the bass....on
come the familiar notes for jcp....and being fairly close to the
speakers on one side of teh stage....i just remember being shaken due to
the vibrations....and then when kim did his solo....it was like i was in
a trance or something....it wasn't just the "sound" of it....it just
took hold of you....i wonder if a deaf person could feel that

Subject: perdictions for the new single

i think the only way we can know/tell whether this new album will be a
hit or not is to actually wait out it's arrival....like i've stated many
times....i think chris is brilliant....but....let's not forget....that
does not automatically make ANYTHING he does gold....will i be one of
the first to go out and buy the cd.....YES....will i like it....almost
positively....will it meet my expectations....i don't know....will it
disappoint a lot of people....probably....also....from what i've
heard...some of the tracks are supposedly absolutely nothing like
soundgarden....even deviating from the whole "rock'n'roll" genre....but
i dont know how accurate that is....i'm sure that chris cornell/sg fans
will probably like it....but it'll take something commercially popular
(like black hole sun during the sg era for example) to actually throw
the album into the top 40
