Subject: listening recommendation

[[I actually sent this about two weeks ago but realized I wasn't signed
on to SOMMS from this address. But here's this gem, anyway.]]

taking a cue from Dena, I'll switch off lurk mode to offer a soundgarden
listening recommendation. Before the actual situation, though, a
meditation on recommended listening: even though for the most part cool
listening experiences come from spontaneous circumstances, I think you
can, to some extent, engineer a greater appreciation from a song my
changing your surroundings, what you see, or what you're doing while
listening to it. Even though that's kind of obvious, I just felt like I
had to justify.

Anyway, I've begun rollerblading recently, since it's been cool for about
ten years (so I'll probably get a cell phone in, like, 2004) and have
"discovered" those trails that they have in parks (and I won't even get
into my problem with driving somewhere to exercise) that go through woods
or by streams or whatever. Here's the recommendation: in your walkman
(or MD player, or whatever) put in a copy of superunknown, but also put
"show me" somewhere on there. Go to aforementioned trails about an hour
or two before sundown -- so the sun's low in the sky. The whole album
(and actually any of 'em) is good for this, but especially on "Head Down"
"Let Me Drown" and "TDITTL" (and "Show Me") go really fast or cruise down
an available hill. Finally, a warning: don't let yourself get so into
the music that you fail to see cracks in the pavement like I did. Those
bumps on the noggin don't look so sweet out on the town.

I'm excited about the top-20 postings. We did something like that on the
list about 4 months ago, didn't we? Favorite post or something? A lot of
people suggested Grote's acronym post, as I recall. Naturally I just
archived all the somms posts I've saved over the years onto some Zip disk
that I'll have to dig up.

After the top 20 are voted on and celebrated, I say we get Kim to compile
the 20 worst somms posts of all time and see if he finishes that or
B-sides first.

p.p.s. tonight (thurs. 7/23/99) they played outshined on VH1's "Rock
Show" I'm not sure if it was a repeat, but it was sort of a focus on
seattle episode. Clip of Mad Season's "River of Deceit" shown, Hater
mentioned. I think they played Hunger Strike, but I didn't see the whole
thing. Anyway the outshined version was the one with them performing in
the smoky room and shots of some bearded guy walking on a wheel. I don't
think this was the version I had seen before (which I only have seen on a
boot tape I have). I know it's on the website, so if you're dying to
figure it out, you can go there.

Just curious guys... anyone know any free mp3 sites with a fairly good
selection? I'm specifically looking for bands such as Soundgarden (of course)
TooL, AIC, Helmet, NIN, Hendrix, Metallica, etc. Thanks,

MorgioN
