This is a great idea, and reminds me of something I've been meaning to put
together for a long time: the top 20 posts in SOMMS history. This will be a
great introduction to the list for potential subscribers and newcomers, and
I think all of us oldtimers will enjoy looking back on the great ones.

I know there have been literally thousands of posts since 1995 and the
search engine on the site sucks, but please send me posts (give me the
digest date, the sender and the subject) that you think deserve to be in the
Top 20. I will compile them into a list and set up a voting page (with links
so you can read each post separately, not in the middle of a digest) on the
site.

PLEASE send me nominations privately, and I'll announce when the voting page
is ready to go. I will be accepting nominations until July 23.

Subject: Re: bashing the newbies

Let me say first that I know where both of you are coming from. I have
seen a lot of bashing of "new" list members over the last few years. But
I think you misunderstood completely what Jenny was suggesting. Once
upon a time this list was fun. Fun like you could not imagine a mailing
list to be. Unfortunately, a lot of the original list members are no
longer around. Things have changed a great deal since our beloved
Soundgarden broke up. I think we have all been at a kind of loss of
ideas or topics. It can be very frustrating for those members who were
around in the "good old days" when this list was a source of joy and
entertainment for everyone who participated. Friendships were born,
stories and jokes were told, and Soundgarden info was abundant. It just
isn't that way anymore. I don't think at all that Jenny was pointing the
finger at the newer list members. That's just the way it is. All
relationships change. But we still like to reminisce. And she was simply
offering an avenue for you to go down and share the same experience. I
joined this list at the tail end of those "good times". I have read many
of the digests and regret not joining sooner, to be closer to those
times. But I have still had the opportunity to meet and get to know some
of the members (a few in person last summer!) and share my love and
respect for one of the greatest bands I have ever known. That is what it
is all about! Check out the digests from BEFORE the band broke up. You
might just find yourself interested...

<< I agree with Lizzy. I've been a SG fan now for about ten years, but
I've only joined the list a short while ago. However, it seems that
people are desperate to overdo the veteran thing and knock new people
who were probably into SG before them anyway. Dates shouldn't matter and
subject fascism should really be avoided. So, although it makes sense
that older people on the list will be frustrated, and Jen is certainly
right that the ancient SOMMS archives should be checked out, I feel that
ignoring unnecessary posts would be alot easier, and then we can get on
with discussing lyric interpretation, or new info, or whatever it is
that takes different fans tick. >>

<< First of all I'm tired of all u ppl bashing the newbies. I'm not a
newbie I liked SG for 10 yrs....but those who started good for them.
They started liking them because of the MUSIC. Who cares about the bands
PAST and HISTORY, of their personel lives. The music is all that
matters. And I think thats what SG is all about. They don't want us to
read all this bullshit about crap..... If I misunderstood u guys I'm
sorry..but since I joined the list which is not long ago, thats all u
guys talk about.....Suggestions for the newbies. >>

I'm from the UK, and I just wondered does anyone have a bootleg copy of
the Reading 95 gig by SG? The video is what I'm after really. If anyone
would be willing to send me a copy I would be really grateful, maybe I
have an SG live tape you would like a copy of?

I was listening to HIV Baby today on my way to work, and the bass
didn't sound like Ben. Remembering that the song was released on an early
single, I looked at the credits writeup for the song. Hiro played bass on
the song, but Ben wrote the music. I'm not a wretched "newbie," so if anyone
could shed some light on this without sarcastic undertones, it would be
greatly appreciated.

Subject: Soundgarden= Six degrees of Def Leppard... Beleive the Hype!

Fellow SOMMies-
I was just listening to my Oslo, Norway 1994 boot and just remembered that
before track 7 (Room a Thousand Years Wide) Chris jokingly introduces the
band as Def Leppard. That was 1994. Jump to 1999. It's interesting, in
retrospect, to view titles of the forthcoming "Euphoria Morning" album in
contrast to Def Leppard's recent attempt at a comeback, "Euphoria" (remember
"Adrenalize" anyone? didn't think so....scary that i do). And also in
contrast to the webmasters at Chris' new site who (mistakenly?hmmmm.....)
added the words def leppard to the old html. Eerie coincidence? Practical
joking? Or something more....? Is it a conspiracy?
Are there even more connections out there?

Discuss! Talk amongst yourselves....
