Well, I guess I got into Soundgarden when I lept on
the whole Seattle and 'grunge' bandwagon back in the
early 90's. I'd gone through my Guns 'n Roses stage
and my Metallica stage, and was currently going
through the Nirvana and Pearl Jam stage. Living in
New Zealand, those two bands actually got heaps of
publicity but SG got virtually none. The first SG
album I brought was Badmotorfinger in 1993 without
hearing any songs off it at all. I basically brought
it because SG were 'the other Seattle band'. Then I
saw them in concert early 1994 (with The Smashing
Pumpkins who I had just discovered too) and
SuperUnknown came out later that year, so they quickly
became my favorite band and have stayed there while
many others have come and gone from my favor.

It took me too long before I brought that. I had
wrongly been told that Eddie Vedder was the lead
singer and that Chris only guested on the album. Once
I found out that it was actually the other way around,
I quickly snapped it up.

I liked it a lot at first, even declaring at one point
my new favorite album. However I've found it's not
very durable and I barely listen to it now. The only
large similarities between it and SG are because it's
Chris singing and Matt playing drums. Likewise, it
doesn't sound significantly like Pearl Jam either in
my opinion. Although I like to tell my Pearl Jam
friends that Chris Cornell invented the Pearl Jam
sound by writing Hunger Strike (I don't really think
that's true, but it pisses them off ;). Pushin
Forward Back is the most SG-like song IMHO, which is
odd since it's written by Stone and Jeff. I'm
guessing that most of the songs that Chris wrote
wouldn't have been 'allowed' onto a SG record. I
mean, things like Say Hello 2 Heaven and Call Me a Dog
a fully fledged ballads.

The pick of the tracks for me are Times of Trouble,
Wooden Jesus, Your Savour and Four Walled World.

I have to disagree with the person who predicted
Chris's new album will sound like TotD. Chris has
movied on a lot since then not to mention having had
nearly two years working on Euphoria Morning and
apparently only a few weekends on TotD. I'm still
sticking by it sounding like a cross between
Soundgarden, Jeff Buckley, and um, don't laugh, Jewel
(rather than Seal).

btw. Is it called 'Euphoria Morning' or 'Euphoria
Mourning'?

And that's enough from me...

Jay.

There's a good reason to think that. It was recorded during the BMF
sessions and nearly made the cut. Ben particularly liked it and said in
an interview that he felt it would have completed BMF, in a sense
covered a dimension that isn't covered as the album stands now.

very stylish. but my only gripe is that i wish they had stuhk zero chance

collapsed mid-song and efforts to revive him failed. He was 47.

All you SG history experts out there, was it really a
possibility that Ben would have joined Nirvana as a
guitarist if he hadn't been offered a place in
Soundgarden?

I find this thought fascinating. It would really have
changed the whole Seattle scene. Nirvana with Ben.
Wow. Ben with both his playing and his song-writing
ability would have made Nirvana from what I consider a
really good band - and certainly a hugely influential
one - into a truly GREAT band. I think there's a
distinct possibility that if that had happened, I'd be
on a Nirvana mailing list here in 1999 instead of a
Soundgarden one. Well maybe both. Just how much
effect do you think Ben has had on Soundgarden? They
certainly seemed to lift a few cogs when he joined,
would that have happened anyway? Or would they have
gone the way of The Screaming Trees and even the Alice
in Chains of this world, and just muddled on as they
were to eventually be forgotten?

Jay.

second rock album I'd ever bought (the 1st was Vs from Pearl Jam)

Outshined done it for me, Badmotorfinger had just come out, and one of my

If you like Soundgarden, then at some point you all must of looked in to
Temple of the Dog, I think it's a really cool album, and has got alot of SG
sound in it, if you haven't already, then give it a listen. For those who

Uuuummmmmmm, don't be to sure about that. Chris has a long history with Salt
Lake. Back in the old days when they just toured in Kim's Van (during the
Hiro era), they used to play quite frequently at a now defunked club called
"The Speedway Cafe". Plus, Soundgarden always played here on each of the
tours and to sold out crowds, particularly the DOTU tour which was a madhouse.

Now does this guarantee or even raise the probability of him coming to Utah?
Probably not. However, given his 14+ year history with Salt Lake, it is not
out of the realm of possibility. But it is still, more than likely, my own
little wet dream.

I heard about this as well, I wasnt sure what it was true though. I
heard that he toured as a backup guitarist for Jason Everman during the
Bleach tour. We all know that Jason didn't play on the album, but toured
as the guitarist and got credit on the album because he paid the 600
bucks. I heard that he was a backup guitarist, but never played a note
with Nirvana ever. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I went there and read the lyrics. It really sounds odd, I've never heard
of it. I'll just take a stab at the dark, maybe it's a Superunknown
Demo? I'm guessing this because Chris wrote music & lyrics to this song,
and to most of Superunkown. Also because the line "CAUSE YOU KNOW WHERE
I'M GOING, YOU KNOW WHERE I'M COMING FROM" kinda sounds like a line in
Let Me Drown. Also keep in mind that there were 28 demos for
Superunknown, only 16 ended up on the album, so there's a large
possibility it's one of those lots demos not on Superunknown or picked
up on a boot like Stolen Prayers.

Also, I was looking up Jeff Buckley. In a list of his b-side demos,
there was Fluttergirl. I couldn't believe it. I had to see if it was
really it, so I checked the lyrics and sure enough, it was the lyrics to
our Fluttergirl. I've never heard of this, I'm sure it's just something
Jeff did at home, just him and a guitar or something. Still a few
questions come to mind, where did Jeff get this, from Chris maybe, since
they were friends? And if the song is actually available, WHERE THE HELL
DO YOU FIND IT???!? hehe. Wouldn't it be cool if Chris got a hold of
this demo and mixed it in his version of Fluttergirl on his album, so it
would be like a duet? That would be eerie....

Subject: Jim Guerinot stuff (no mention of Smashmouth :-)

Excerpt from LA Times July 1st 1999: Emerging from under rock - Mike Boehm

Jim Guerinot manages three of the biggest-selling acts to emerge from the
'80s independent, do-it-yourself movement: the Offspring, No Doubt and
Soundgarden's singer, Chris Cornell.
Guerinot's Laguna Beach-based label, Time Bomb Recordings, straddles the
fissure between "alternative" camps, taking its funding from the BMG
conglomerate and aiming for mainstream hits, but operating on independent
principles of keeping costs low and emphasizing a gradual buildup through
steady touring, rather than a brass-ring grab for a quick breakthrough.
To Guerinot, "alternative" today stands for an approach to a career rather
than the style a band might play, or which sales stratum it might aspire to.
The key question, he said, is "Are you a band who in some form is doing it
yourself, as opposed to [having] someone else do it for you? Are you at the
center of directing the business part of your career as well as the creative
side?
"There's a kind of band that waits to be signed and have somebody put the
whole thing together for them," he added. "That kind of band is going to
have a tough time" if it fails to score a big hit.
"We've always wanted to sign bands who are going to be bands whether they're
signed or not," Guerinot said. "[Their attitude is] 'It would be nice to
have [a substantial record company] to work with, but in the absence of that
we'll do what we're doing.' That kind of band will [survive]."

Subject: Re: TOTD

I just wanted to let everyone know that the connection between TOTD
(Soundgarden & Pearl Jam), was pretty much the lead singer of Mother Love
Bone, Andrew Wood. I believe that Chris and Andy lived together for awhile
and were really good friends.....So when Andy died in March of 1990, Jeff
Ament and Stone Gossard(who were in MLB pre Pearl Jam) joined Chris and Matt
to record a couple of tribute songs to Andy Wood. Those sessions grew into
the Temple of the Dog album, named from a line in Wood's song "Man of Golden
Words". They we're all directly about Wood: some were existing Cornell
compositions that didn't fit Soundgarden's established format, but the
record showed the direction Stone and Jeff were heading, especially by
asking Mike McCready(lead guitar) and Eddie Vedder(back up vocals) to
contribute to TOTD, which lead to Mookie Blaylock, now Pearl Jam.
I could go on for hours..... So in some ways, Chris and Matt helped to
start what is now Pearl Jam. But I feel if it wasn't for influence of Andy
Wood, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, for the most part, wouldn't be who they are
today. All three bands will always stay in my heart and I can say they
pretty much changed my life(especially SoundGarden!!!).

I was thinking of this as I came home from work today. Surprised me when I
saw this subject, but oh well. Chris and Jeff are both acknowledged to be
good friends in real life. When Jeff died, Chris was invited to help produce
Sketches for Mary Guibert (Jeff's ma), which he did (if you have Sketches,
look for the Il Dottere note at back of the liner notes). I know that both
played at a festival in Milwaukee, but never toured together. I find it
strange that Chris would give Jeff a copy of the demo tape made for SU.
That's the most logical solution, I mean, could Jeff have the time to trade
Soundgarden bootlegs off the net? :) Its also strange if you think about it,
that Chris has a song on Euphoria that's made in memory of Jeff (Wave
Goodbye).

On a second note, if you want to get geared up for Euphoria Morning, and by
guessing that it'll be more easier listening then Pretty Noose blaring out
the stereo, check out Sketches (for my sweetheart the drunk) by Jeff
Buckley. I am listening to it as we speak and I feel that even though
Sketches is technically studio demos, it is one of the best CD's lyrically
and musically I have ever bought. Go do yourself and your ears a fave and
get this.

thanks for stating the obvious. if it weren't for how much i love

We're hyped about Cornell's new release, and that's great. But
everyone seems to be overlooking Cameron's new skin. No, I'm not talking
about his career with pearl jam. I'm talking about WELLWATER CONSPIRACY,
damnit!
Matt, along with John McBain (who played on Monster Mag's debut album
Spine of God), have two Wellwater Conspiracy albums out now. Two! And one
of those albums was released just a few months ago. You can buy it in any
store! Matt sings lead vocal! BROTHERHOOD OF ELECTRIC: OPERATIONAL
DIRECTIVE(S) is a kick ass album (although, admittedly, not soundgarden).
DECLARATION OF CONFORMITY, their first album, is also great. Am I alone
here? Compellor, Sleeveless, Teen Lambchop, Ladder to the Moon, etc...
Great shit, man!

I dont have anything against newbies, I'm kind of one myself, I've been
on the list since last September. Relatively new, but that's almost a
year. But I knew that before I joined the list, we're not ALL freakin'
morons... I guess it's just a beginner's inflated sense of self-esteem
or something. All you guy SOMMS vets out there tell me you never did
something like this, trying to let everybody know that you knew
something about Soundgarden?

It's hard to put down somebody who posted a post like this though.
They're intelligent enough to like Soundgarden, and all it takes is time
to be intelligent enough to realize the intelligence of others on this
list. Everybody makes stupid posts like this, just let them slip, the
person that posted it will regret it later.

Just remember, everybody who likes Soundgarden enough to join this list
will get over their newbie state. They'll learn in time, so be patient.

Hi all, I'm probably a day late but what the hell. I love the track
listings, what would some of you preferred they do? Put the fast
ones together, then the punk ones, the slow ones...you gotta mix
it up! I hear the opening strains of the next one too, whoever said
that...if I do want to mix it up, I have a 7-cd stereo. Pack em all in
plus TOTD push "random play" and voila! Soundgarden utopia for
the next 6 or so hours! It's kind of a neat way to experience them,
it's like a rediscovery.

would appeal to my family. Of course I can come up with tons of places that I

I was watching VH1's pop up video today and an old Billy Joel video called
"Pressure" came on. There were several scenes during the video that showed
Billy strapped into a chair with a large screen in front of him. He was
watching a film where several random images flashed by quickly including the
words hate, love, happiness, mother, father, etc. Then suddenly my mind
flashed to the BUTOW video where Chris was strapped into that same chair
watching that same film. I think it was interesting to watch where
Soundgarden got the influence for that video. If it comes on again I
suggest you watch it.

I totally agree with Alan here. We should be greatfull that there still are
"newbies". This simply goes to show that Soundgarden is still alive and
kicking in spirit and have not been forgotten. I don't think the original
post was pompous, naive, or whatever. The original poster was just replying
to a comment from another sommster concerning what the similarities between
SG, MLB, PJ, and TOTD were. Perhaps he was just trying to clear the relations
of these bands up for anyone who wasn't totally clear on the subject. Not
everyone who starts to like a band knows EVERYTHING about them --- That's why
many of us are on the list to begin with --- To learn more about the great
band that Soundgarden was and continues to be through the music they left
behind.

I'm gonna have to agree with Alan's mail. I too am a "newbie" (3 months or
so) and although I know the connection between SG, TOTD, & PJ I thought it
was an informative post for others who may not.

Also, a few weeks ago, someone in the San Francisco Bay Area mentioned that
they may hold a SOMMSters get together before the CC show. I'd love to chat
with any Bay Area SG fans about that idea and maybe get together at some
other local shows.
