> Have some of
> you lost faith in him just from a magazine article?

Some of us have lost some faith in him based on his last two songs,
magazine article aside. I WANT the new album to be good. I hope it is
good. Some people seem to think that those of us with misgivings are
being fatalists. I don't think that's the case.

> Sunshower...(i feel the song gets
stronger in the chorus)

That's interesting (not dissing you), because I always hated the music
to the chorus and felt like that was what really ruined a song that
seemed to start out stronger and with a nice feel.

> IT IS STILL A
> BRILLIANT SONG AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT. It may not have been a powerful
> ballard but it was powerful nonetheless.
> Whether or not anyone wants to admit it, this is one of the best songs
> Chris has written in a long time.

My problem with it is that I never found anything brilliant or powerful
about it. Maybe it's because I'm "old" and I've heard more stuff over
time, but it sounded quite hackneyed and early 70's to me. And I think
Chris has written many songs that are much better. If he hadn't, this
song wouldn't disappoint me so much.

> Fluttergirl fluff? Why, because it didn't have a
> heavy riff in it?

No, because the tune and the lyrics lack substance for me. It has
nothing to do with heaviness.

> Ok, you heard Fluttergirl from "Stolen Prayers", right? On that
> Fluttergirl was a demo from freakin' 1994. There are two reasons you
> shouldn't relate 1994 demos to his new album:
>
> A) It was 5 years ago, there's been lots of stuff happening since then

But I think it's a fairly safe assumption that the tune and lyrics will
be essentially the same (although we could be wrong, given the drastic
change Fell On Black Days went through).

> B) It was an incomplete demo, no drums, no bass. It was just vocals and guitar. How are you going to keep that from being "Fluffy"?

There's nothing at all fluffy about Mike Johnson, Mark Lanegan, Nick
Drake, Pete Krebs, or most of what I've heard by Elliot Smith. The lack
of a backing band is not what made this song seem insubstantial to me.

> With just the vocals and guitars it's stripped down right to the music, how are
> you supposed to make it rocking?

I never said it needed to be rocking, did I? (And anyway, I've heard
some people really rock out on just an acoustic.)

> I mean, the first solo effort by Chris
> was Seasons, that was just vocals and guitar too. That was a good song,

Yes, that is a good song. There is a great deal of strength, mood,
thoughtfulness, and originality in that song. The music and lyrics are
pretty, disturbing, charming, and intriguing all at once.

> Seems everybody
> is trying to show how much of a hardcore rock/metal/whatever fan he or she
> is by putting down other genres. Especially anything remotely electronic
gets a lot of bashing.

Actually, I thought the idea of electronic experimentation sounded
interesting and promising. I like a lot of electronic music. I really
don't listen to or like much metal at all. I like music from a lot of
genres, including pop, although I don't hear much pop these days that I
like.

> Wouldn't you all just love to hear Kim's take on that article???

Oh, yes ma'am, Toni, I would! :) ...a six-pack, a pizza, and some

First of all, Jen, Sunshower was a good song. If you are a fan of
singer/songwriters such as Mark Lanegan or various members of Fleetwood
Mac, maybe then you'll know what a singer/songwriter should sound like. If
Chris did a banshee wail for every song, then surely we would have to
agree that he IS limited. Why doesn't he bring in Kim on guitar too, and
maybe Matt on drums, and hey, Ben's free. For me, Sunshower showed another
side to Chris. It sets up the album perfectly. And just another point, why
do you write your messages like you're in demand, "To answer multiple
other people's comments:", what are you, famous? And therefore a GOD.

Which brings me to Koggle. You make good points on a regular basis, most
of which I agree with, but today you revealed that you see stars as Gods
i.e. Chris Cornell. One thing being into alternative music should have
taught you, especially if you have been in a band yourself, and/or if you
have grown out of the teenage crush thing, is that all guys in bands are
just regular people; they eat, shit, fall in love, and get pissed off with
obsessives. Not to start a war, but some messages here are not just
appreciation of the band, which I thought it would be, it's addiction.

Furthertcb.

Subject: Lost Perspective?

You know, Seasons is one of the most powerful songs I have
ever heard. Even now, each time I play it, I feel like I am
hearing it for the first time. I am still amazed someone at that
stage in his life could write a song about human experience so
insightful and so beautifully introspective. And yet, it came
from a musician who was part of a rock band known for heavy
guitar parts, monster drum action, kick-ass punk attitude and a
fierce commitment to doing music their own way. Who would have
guessed?
Do I like every Soundgarden song 100%? No, if truth be
told. I like some more than others; some songs really move me
and some don't at all. But, I can say with absolute certainty
that the music of Soundgarden and of its members as a whole has
had a profound effect on my life. I think this is due to the kind
of people that Chris, Kim, Matt and Ben are and the things they
stand for and believe in. All of that comes though their music.
Maybe solo projects will not be as inspirational as
Soundgarden was as a band, but who knows? How can you be sure
until you hear it? If the man and his message are still the same,
then I look forward to a new expression of his music. Chris
Cornell: nothing more, nothing less. Anything else is mere
speculation, distraction, hype and trivial fribble in my opinion.

Regards, Sarah

1) "Sunshower is a good song"? That's a matter of opinion.

2)I think I'm speaking on behalf of others when I say that we realize that
if Chris screamed on every song it would be boring and dull. I'm not saying
Sunshower isn't a good song because its slow or mellow. Hell, so is Seasons,
and I think that may be one of the most beautiful songs of all time. I am a
huge fan of Fleetwood Mac and I can *still* say that I just don't think that
Sunshower is good. I agree that he should show his "other side". I'm a huge
Jeff Buckley fan; I love that "other side", but I don't see why it had to be
so bland.

Sheesh! Is that what you really think I'm like? That's not the way I
intended it to sound at all. I simply didn't feel like going back
through every post that had a comment I wanted to comment on and credit
and quote each person, plus several people made similar comments. No, I
don't think I'm any kind of god (or goddess) or in demand, and I
certainly wouldn't call myself famous. But this is a mailing list where
people should feel free to express their opinions about Soundgarden
related things, and take up a dialogue with other posters, and there are
a lot of interesting ideas being discussed lately. I just want to be an
active part of a list I joined with the intention of being an active
part of it, and I do take the time to read and consider every post and
the ideas expressed therein. I'm sorry if you prefer lurkers and
deleters. I prefer a list where people express themselves and relate to
each other.

I am a fan of Mark Lanegan, for more years than I was a SG fan even, and
other singer/songwriters. I know what a singer/songwriter should sound
like. My dislike of Sunshower has nothing to do with the "sound". I
thought I had made that clear, but I guess not. No, I don't want or
expect a banshee wail all the time. In fact, I always thought Chris
wailed and screamed a bit too much. I don't like the song because I
don't like the composition or the lyrics. It could be done in any style
with any "sound" and I probably still wouldn't like it. I hope that
Chris is NOT limited. I want to see him excel in other formats. I like
variety.

I think maybe a few of us are overreacting to that blurb on Chris'

This doesn't have much to do with Soundgarden, I just wanted to say that if
you are looking for a pretty descent metal band then check out Corrosion of
Conformity. This band is one of the rare metal bands that dont totally
scream out their lyrics in a fashion in which you cannot understand what the
hell they are saying and the guitar lics are pretty tasty. I dont like
posting things that do not have to do with soundgarden but I figure you are
all music fans and would love to get your hands on something good.

Nick, you completely misunderstood what I was saying. I wasn't saying that
he should make music *like* Jeff Buckley. Someone had inferred that I wanted
an only screeaming Chris, so I used Jeff Buckley as an example music that I

I think you should consider a little more carefully
what a set list IS before you get all sarcastic
Rachel. Set list meaning the songs he'll play in
concert, no the songs on the album.
