Well, I'm embarrassed (but relieved to have this mystery solved). And I
even have this album. Tells you how long it's been since I listened to
it. Someone might have done a cover of it that I heard on the radio in
the 80's, or else they were playing Syd. Anyway, it seems that early
Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett made an impression on most, perhaps all, the
Soundgarden fellows.

Hi guys, had to stop lingering for a moment. I think I Awake
will touch a nerve with anyone who had something crappy
happen to them, I came damn near to crying the first time I
heard it back in 1990. But at the same time I think that's why
the guys are usually loathe to explain the true meaning of each
song, and to let us each read into it whatever it means to us.
Isn't that the whole point of music? One song can mean a million
different things to a million different people, this is music that
speaks a million different languages. That's what SG is to me.
Back to lingering now.

Subject: Some questions...

Hi SOMMSters,
Here are some things I've been wondering about, so
I might as well ask you all for some help. First,
does anyone know what that black T-shirt with the
white face that Kim always wears is? Is it a band
logo or what? Second, I'd like to know if anyone
caught SG's performance at Lollapalooza on the 16th of
July, 1996 at the Charles Town Raceway in Charles
Town, West Virginia. I did, and am looking for some
kindred souls to share their experiences of seeing the
GREATEST BAND IN THE WORLD! Last, but not least, who
here thinks Kim is the greatest guitar player ever?
Also, has anyone on this list ever met Kim? My goal
in life is to just meet Kim and have a brew with his
bad self! If anyone on the list has any idea as to
Kim's whereabouts(address, location, phone number,
etc...), please let me know. Seeya SOMMSters!

                                    All the Best,
                                        DB

Kim is an awesome guitarist, but I'd have to say he's only second best.
Eddie Van Halen will always be the greatest. If you need proof I suggest you
listen to "Eruption" by Van Halen.

Although I think Kim is a great player, he's somewhere like 6 or 7 on my
top ten list of guitarists. What keeps him rather low is his awkward
improvisational solos. Sometimes he's dead on with the jamming solo,
although from what I've heard, most times it just sounds like random notes
strung together and played very quickly with a huge emphasis on that muddy
wah tone he gets. From a technical standpoint, there are just too many
other guitarists who exceed him. Can he shred as fast as Van Halen or
Randy Rhodes, or palm mute as quickly as James Hetfield, or play a
solo with the intensity and honesty of Stevie Ray? Not in my opinion.
In his favor, though, he did great things with strange tunings. His solos
are immediately recognizable. That's an indication of a great soloist, I
think. You don't just copy someone's sound, you invent your own.

All i can say is this. Look at any Rockabilly Guitarist and the way they
play. Great stuff. They combine all forms of playing. The lead, Rhythm
and all that shit.

Let's look at this from a different standpoint: It's not really if he's
the "best" guitarist in the world or whatever, but what he contributed to the
music. With Stevie, his solos were awesome, however his music often lacked
depth. Now take into account Soundgarden's music. Would an SRV solo fit into
that?

My point is that there are millions of people that can play as fast as Van
Halen, however if you're with a band, you have to contribute to the entire
sound instead of just hogging the spotlight. I'm sure that Kim Thayil can
shred with the best of them, but he's not out to steal any spotlights.

Hope that made sense,
