One of my favorite songs is 'Switch Opens.' It's such a calm, beautiful
song, and the lyrics are so visual:

"Hey you slaves, go hang your owners/Draw your names among their ashes/Put
your children on their thrones/Gather round and fall right down.../Switch
is on, switch is on, switch is on..."

I love Chris' lyrics because they paint this strange, exaggerated picture.
The hyperbole of lyrics like "I was slipping through the cracks of a
stolen jewel/I was tightrope walking with two-ton shoes" or "The day I
tried to live/I stole a thousand beggar's change and gave it to the
rich/The day I tried to win/I dangled from the power lines and let the
martyrs stretch" creates evocative images, as if he was trying to tell a
story, rather than simply telling you how he feels. That's what I think
separated Soundgarden from other bands: they were taking you on a
journey, and you experienced what they went through, as opposed to simply
hearing about it.

-Elliott

Feel the air now
Tumbling and wander in the moonshine
Switch opens...
Nothing is when everything is all right
Switch is on...

Hey, I got it! How about "Uncle Chris's Family Feedbag"?

SOMMSters,

Hey, I just got all that e-mail about threads and everything the other
day, and something springed into my mind. I've never been on another
mailing list, and I'm afraid this one will spoil my future mailing
lists, because the people on here kick so much ass. I mean, god, we're
all intelligent. Every member of the band has said that there are going
to be less Soundgarden fans, but they will always be smarter. Amid all
of this bickering at each other, not one person has said "Yo momma" or
"you suck", because we're just not like that. People who listen to
Soundgarden automatically become more intelligent, it's just a fact of
nature. We're all having more of discussions than arguments, and it
takes real brains to do stuff like that. So, is this what every
Soundgarden fan is like? No, but there's a lot more people like this
that are fans of Soundgarden than some mindless metal band who talk
about fucking little girls and doing drugs in all their lyrics.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

Andy

In a message dated 99-04-19 17:44:38 EDT, you write:

<< Being an owner of two dogs, grass doesn't grow greener where dogs shit - it
dies. So unless you have a dog that's part cow, don't count on your grass
 growing.
  >>
I know htis has nothing to do with Soundgarden but neither did this post, but
if it doesn't make it grow, then why is my dog's pen greener than the rest of
my lawn, and also grows a lot more and is the first grass to come up?

Yeah, the guys in SG were completely correct in saying that their fans
were intelligent people. I love talking with people on this mailing list.
It's one of the only places I've discovered on the Net where intelligent
music lovers congregate and discuss music on a cultural and intellectual
basis. The friends I've made here are really great people too.
It's so cool that we're actually dissecting the "shedding/shitting"
lyric on the basis of the scientific viability of dog feces as fertilizer.
(I suppose it probably wouldn't make good grass fertilizer, though. The pH
is all wrong.) Nowhere else have I seen a conversation even close. :)

SOMMSters-

New Rocket came out yesterday, their 300th issue. The feature article was the
top 300 northwest albums of all time. For the first 100 albums they did a
little blurb, so if you are interested go to the Rocket's website
(http://www.musicuniverse.com/rocket/rocket.htm) they should have the new
issue up in a day or two. Great article...good to use as like a checklist.
Here is how the boys did (albums, eps, appearences):

7.) Soundgarden- Superunknown
12.) Various Artists- Sub Pop 200
15.) Various Artists- Deep Six
21.) Soundgarden- Screaming Life
47.) Temple Of The Dog- Temple Of The Dog
62.) Soundtrack- Singles
82.) Soundgarden- Badmotorfinger
132.) Soundgarden- Louder Than Love
229.) Various Artists- Home Alive
239.) Soundgarden- UltraMegaOk
257.) Soundgarden- Down On The Upside

I think thats it..if there are anymore post them..like anything I missed.
Also of note in a little blurb in the middle they had the top 5 bands in the
top 300 and Soundgarden was second with 5 LPs and 1 EP.
