I'm sorry to bother everyone else on this list, but...
Whoever who is running the new Soundgarden Rarities Server, could you
please contact me. After a resent wrestle with my computer, all info on
login to the server has taken the unforgiving road to the valley of
'deletedness'.

Ok, since everyone else is doing it, here's my top 20
for the nineties (and only the nineties). Though I'm
sure there are pleny of other albums that I'd love but

2. The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and ...
3. Soundgarden - Down on the Upside
4. Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
5. Radiohead - The Bends
6. Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
7. Temple of the Dog - Temple of the Dog
8. Tool - Aenima
9. Pearl Jam - Vs
10. Radiohead - OK Computer
11. The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
12. Stone Temple Pilots - Core
13. Sublime - Sublime
14. Beck - Odelay

17. White Zombie - Supersexy Swingin' Sounds
18. Ben Folds Five - Ben Folds Five
19. Faith No More - King for a Day/Fool for a Lifetime
20. Pavement - Brighten the Corners

Yeah, he did sound more like Sammy Hager or somone
than Chris when performing that song. But in
fairness, that's pretty much how the song is on the
album too. It's supposed to be sung that way. Listen
to Burden in my Hand on the same show and you'll hear
that Chris's voice was fine.

I have often thought though, that one of the other
possible reasons that Soundgarden spilt up is because
Chris has lost a lot of the power from his voice. He
just can't seem to sing those old Soundgarden songs
live anymore as well as they should be. It's even in
evidence on Down on the Upside. He never really
stretch's out his range like he did with old songs
like Slaves and Bulldozers and Beyond the Wheel.

Anyone else notice this?

    Jay.

I've been on the list for quite a while now, and I've been waiting for this
issue to come up.

When I first really heard SG live, it was a short clip from Lolla '96 on MTV.
I must say Spoonman sounded like shit. To me. Then.

But you have to realize, studio singing, and live singing/recording are two
completely different animals. In the studio you get a lot of takes, plus you
get to mess with it later. Live is... well, live!

Certain few songs just do not sound that good live, Pretty Noose being one.
Spoonman as I mentioned took some getting used to. But then I realized how
well he does a lot of others. I have not heard a bootleg where Chris does
not just NAIL Searching (etc.). I also have a boot from the show in
Sacramento (12/4/96) that I went to, and there is the most AWESOME version of
Outshined on there, just awesome.... I get that version stuck in my head
more than the studio track.

And finally.. on the Chris not stretching his range out thing: He sings just
as high on Karaoke, Bleed Together, and Never the Machine as he did on S&B or
BTW. I've got the notes to prove it. (P.S. the very popular LIVE version of
BTW is fucking amazing.......way better than the studio track.)

Hey List!

I was driving to a meeting in Rochester today, and as i
flipped through the radio stations....i left it on some
Classic Rock station and this familiar song came on...like
every single classic rock song. It's either background
music or some beer or burger king commercial.

Anyway...i'm driving along and i hear the phrase..."Like a
sweet sunshower".

No, it's not Chris Cornell...it's REO Speedwagon! The title
is "Roll with the Changes". I know CC is a huge Classic
rock fan. Maybe this is some crypic message for his first
post SG single?

Robert Plant sang, "I can breathe again" in the song "Little
by Little". A direct reference that he was finally happy
being a solo artist and not in the shadow of the zeppelin.

I think Sting did the same thing.

So, what i'm saying...maybe CC found the inspiration for the
title to Sunshower in the REO Speedwagon song. It makes
sense if you listen to the lyrics.

Roll With the Changes

As soon as you are able
Woman I am willing
To make the break that we
Are on the brink of
My cup is on the table
Our love is spilling
Waiting here for you to
Take and drink of

So if you're tired of the
Same old story
Turn some pages
I'll be here when you are ready
To roll with the changes

I knew it had to happen
Felt the tables turnin'
Got me through my darkest hour
I heard the thunder clappin'
Felt the desert burnin'
Until you poured on me
Like a sweet sunshower

So if you're tired of the
Same old story
Turn some pages
I'll be here when you are ready
To roll with the changes

Roll with the changes

Hmmmmmm...too much of a coincidence ;)

Isn't that just the coolest thing you've heard in a while?

Yeah, I mean on some of the DOTU songs he goes pretty high, like in the
aforementioned 'Pretty Noose,' but nothing like the sonic screams we all
know and love from the BMF and before days. In my opinion, nothing will
ever beat 'Birth Ritual.' How the hell can that man sing so damn high?!

Are we all forgetting He Didnt or the Spoonman demo found on Stolen Prayers
("They must have kicked Chris in the balls before he sang that"- Arden).
Those are some pretty piercing high parts. But we all have to realize that
Chris used to scream a lot too, which he stopped doing pretty much after BMF.
I mean look at the screaming found on the Deep Six CD, its all screaming, as
the band progressed the singing style progressed. The music could have
progressed with out Chris singing as high as he did in the past, and it still
would have been Soundgarden. Higher isnt better, and really shouldnt be
grounds for a band to break up. You just mold the music differently.

It may be true that he doesn't sing as high on DOTUS, but I don't
think it is because of inability. My reason for coming to this conclusion is
that the actual music on the album has changed from the older days as well,
and his voice changes to fit this newer style perfectly. This is evident on
the songs written by all members of the band.

Just my humble opinion,

I'll tell you what annoys me like HELL!!! When people
hear a snippet of Soundgarden performing live, and
maybe Chris's voice isn't at it's best, they
automatically right him off. They'll say that he
'only sounds good in the studio' and 'isn't really a
good singer'. That's just such total bullshit. You
can't fake that, if you could, then there would be 50
bands out their with vocals like Chris's on their
records.

> Certain few songs just do not sound that good live,
> Pretty Noose being one.

I think Pretty Noose (and Spoonman) still sounds great
live, even with the slightly weak singing. It's
always been the instrumentation in that song that
makes it rock, and, as far as I know, more often than
not, that always sounds BETTER live. And when Chris
is on form with the vocals, he sounds BETTER live in
most of the songs too.

In those songs he may hit the notes. But he doesn't
get the power or intensity that he exhibited on,
Badmotorfinger, for example. I mean on a song like
New Damage, it's almost too much! That said, I prefer
Down on the Upside over Badmotorfinger as a whole.

Just to try and clarify somewhat on what I said before
about Soundgarden maybe disbanding partially because
Chris's voice is getting weaker. I think it goes in
part with how they were always careful to stay true to
what they perceived as Soundgarden's 'sound'. Part of
that is undoubtably Chris's intense wail. Now perhaps
he can't do it like he used to anymore, which is
totally understandable. Apparently Pavoritti's time
is running out too :o). But perhaps he just doesn't
want to sing like that anymore, and doesn't want to go
on tour after tour and keep on doing it. They could
have radiacally changed the sound of the band, but I
dont' think they wanted to do that. They decided it
was better to end the band where it was, and each go
on and do whatever it was they wanted, but keep
Soundgarden to stand for what it always had.

Well that's just a theory, I ain't saying it's right.
I hope it made sense.

    Jay.
