hey SOMMSters. wow, i haven't written in a while. oh wells. i just thought
i would, especially since tomorrow is what it is. now, i know some of you
don't care anymore (i won't mention names), but i do. just think of it this
way: could any of us imagine our lives if we hadn't listened to
Soundgarden?? Me?? I can't. that's why tomorrow is important to remember.
this band that was, has become apart of us in one way or another. for me
at least, it made me think a bit more about everything in my life. i can't
say that about every band i've listened to. so kiddies, take time tomorrow
to enjoy what Soundgarden did for you. i know i will...

btw, i've waited five months to do this...

fellow SOMMSters, here is the official unvailing of my SG site. please take
the time to chek it out. i worked really hard on it. thanks.

Hi Kathleen
I just wanted to reply to your post and let you know it actually felt
pretty good to read your comments and i wanted to let you know you are not
alone in your passion for Soundgarden. Actually i hardly think of them
really gone anymore since their tapes and cds hardly left my cd player or
car stereo since i began playing them back in '92. I dont write to the SOMMS
post often but your post inspired me to reply...
Your post reminded me what an influence those guys had on me personally
and creatively in my life and i dont think any other band i have ever
listened to has ever come that close or influenced me like they did. Sure,
Zepplin and the Beatles are probably two of my favorite bands and two of the
best rock n roll bands to have ever been and were definitely responsible in
shaping the sound of Soundgarden but they were bands i didnt get to mature
with as a young man as they churned out albums in their era. Soundgarden was
and i am grateful for their inspiration through their incredible sounds and
lyrics.
Being able to grow as a person and an artist thru my college years with
the sound of Soundgarden maturing and expanding with me will be an
experience i will never forget and for that i will always hold the band
close to my heart. And i am grateful for fans like you who make me feel like
i am not alone as i throw a soundgarden cd into my stereo about (though it
feels like but not really) every day. Freinds still give me funny looks like
"why am i listening to this old stuff still".. .tomorrow i will be
definitely running thru my extensive bootleg cd collection and perhaps
watching some pirated concert footage of their shows trying to recapture the
feeling of seeing them live in Indianapolis during the summer of 1996 and
under a hot "July sun"...
I guess i am curious about your first Soundgarden "experience" Kathleen.
I feel like i came in a little late in the game but i will share with you
the first time i heard Soundgarden not knowing how attached i would end up
being to their music...
It was fall of 1992 and i had gone to see True Romance with a group of
college buddies. i had just started my sophomore year. Of course i remember
being blown away by the source music in the scene of Brad Pitt getting high
smoking a honey bear "bowl" as he is harrased by gangsters (pretty funny
scene actually) and walking away from the theatre with "that" song stuck in
my head. Even though the song was only played for about 30 seconds i was
hooked. I ran out to Media Play and checked out the film soundtrack and soon
found out the song was "Outshined" and the band was Soundgarden. It was then
i worked my way backwards thru their album catalogue and feeling like i
discovered gold with every song i played.
It was late in my junior year of college in 94 i remember feverishly
waiting in line at the record store at midnight for their new album after
catching the Spoonman video a few weeks prior on mtv. Superunknown was the
Soundgarden album that made the strongest impression on my personally then
and i think it still does now. Songs like "Fresh Tendrils" and "Like
Suicide" bring back memories of good times and bad with thoughts of a past
romantic relationship and times with freinds. Even years later as I play
these songs i can still find inspiration or meaning to chris' ambiguous
lyrics and their music.
And two years later after i graduated college i was in line again for
Down on the Upside and it feels like yesterday that i was patiently waiting
thru crappy videos on mtv with my finger on the record button trying to tape
the "Burden In My Hand" video.
I regret i only saw them live once but will never forget seeing them
stride out onto stage all dressed in black head to toe opening the show with
Spoonman or hearing their haunting version of "Waiting for the Sun" by the
Doors.
Well i rambled enough but im sure we'll all be reminiscing abit and
once Chris' album comes out this September, we will all be inspired all over
again...

Joe

P.S. if we get too depressed this month about their breakup two years ago
i'm sure some of us can look a month forward from now to May 19th for a
little pick me up...

Peace Love and and May Soundgarden be with you...

PS I did suggest that if they hadn't chosen the pictures yet, they might
consider giving Ben and Matt their own month this time around :-)

Yeah, no kidding. When I bought the 1999 calender, I was somewhat
dismayed to see that almost all of the pictures were glamour shots of
Chris, with Kim getting one picture, and the band getting only two. They
could at least give Matt and Ben a picture for the month of their
birthday.

SOMMSters,

Yes, today is April 9th, and we should all be mourning. But I've found
another way to cope with the loss: listen to your entire Soundgarden
collection in chronoligical order. :) Trust me, it works. After I did it
last year, I just looked at my fav Soundgarden poster and said "Holy
crap these guys are amazing". I don't post that often, but this is
something that I just don't quite understand. What would Chris say to
you if he say you moping around or crying because two years ago today
they went on for personal interests? This is a lot like hero
worshipping, exactly what nobody in the band wanted. You could say that
collecting everything they've ever done and buying all their merchandise
is hero worshipping, but you're celebrating their MUSIC, crying or
moping around because they broke up is just saying "Look at me, I'm sad.
Pay attention to me, everybody, my fav band broke up two years ago today
and I'm pissed off". And that's not gonna get anybody's attention or
help you cope with the loss in any way. I think instead of remembering
every April 9th as "the day the music died", we should remember it as a
"Soundgarden Appreciation Day". Think about it. Music might as well have
died when Jason Everman joined!! :) It's gonna be ok, Chris is getting
his solo out sometime this year, as is Kim and the B-Side collection,
it's gonna be ok!! Appreciate them more than anything, I'm sure
everybody is doing that without even thinking that.

Ok, that's all I have to say. Thanks for listening.

Andy
