well, i can agree with you on the vai + satriani (speed over
substance.....who cares how fast you can play? it's how you play it that
counts....and they have zero emotion in their playing)...but i don't think
thayil can touch srv. srv had an incredible amount of heart in his
work....the way he bent those strings. man...

doesn't matter anyways, cause zappa blows em all away!

Agreed. However, you have to admit that Vai was cool in 'Crossroads.' ;-)

SRV is already a guitar legend, and he only passed away rather recently.
He sang and played like a man possessed. Gives me chills listening to him
play on 'Texas Flood.' I love Kim to death, but as I've gotten more
experienced with music and guitar, his status among my guitar heroes as
dropped. Before BMF, his playing was rather tasteless. For his soloing,
he'd pick maybe four root notes, then play every single note in between
really, really fast. That's not really shredding, since there was no
melodic quality to it. It was just sloppy. Since I've gotten into metal
a lot recently, I'd have to go with James Hetfield as my guitar hero.

Sure, Hetfield is great. But better than Dave Mustaine?

There's an interview with Kim in Guitar World, has Kurt Cobain on the
cover...not sure what it's about since I didn't have time to read it, nor the
money to buy it. Just thought I'd let you all know (if you didn't already
know that is) ;)
