For those of you that werent here during the so called "golden years" of the somms list...there was a tshirt scandel a while back where this loser who called himself "Nothingman" stole $400 from various list members. Anyone hunt him down and beat it out of him? ahhhh memories of flame wars, interesting topics and groupie gossip. Good or bad memories...that's your own decision ;) And...i finally broke down and bought Asides even though i swore i never would. It was $5 in the bargain bin. It'll make a nice coaster ;) Those that wasted their money on the latest Sub Pop's single of the month club...are you as disappointed in the products as i am? The bands can at least be good! Yeah, the vinyl colours are cool...but come on! What a scam! anyway...happy turkey day to those that wish to celebrate it :) I'm having a tofuturkey day...which isnt as bad as it sounds :) steve - heavy rotation: PJ - live, Metallica - Garage Inc, Spiritualized - Live, Afghan Whigs - 1965, Sloan - Navy Blues - in the DVD player: Silence of the Lambs - this weeks lyrical question: why do i keep fucking up? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 16:41:51 EST From: UnknownGrl@AOL.COM Subject: susan silver does anyone know an e-mail and/or mailing address for Silver Management? Or possibally where i could find it........ -rachel ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 17:01:55 EST From: Niki Freer Subject: Chris Cornell in AP this month... hello all! i picked up a copy of the NEW AP (not the one who caused so many problems on here) and it had a listing of the 25 most anticipated albums of 1999. Chris Cornell is listed as like, the 3rd or so album on this list. there's a nice large photo of him, but he looks a bit...un-chris. i don't know, that whole new look's gonna take a little bit of getting used to. the little write up itself is quite nice and speaks well of him, saying what an incredibly personal album this will be. Chris says, "Originally, I thought it was going to go in a more acoustic-ethereal direction. It's swayed from that a little bit. The easiest was to sum it up is it's very singer-songwriter-oriented. It's definately a singer's record. I'm really into putting my voice out there naked and being heard, which is probably a reaction to being in a band for so long." He goes on to say..."Sometimes I write down a line and think, 'God, do i want people to hear that?' Then I know that I should keep it. If I write something down that just seems cool, that's when I work harder." "I'm sure there will be moments in the future when all I'll want to do is be agressive, and make a lot of noise. This isn't the time for that," he says. "Music is so wide-open. It blows me away how bands meander around the same territory for years. For me, it's such a huge, infinte landscape of things you can do." god bless that man. :) oh, and the most exciting part? Projected Release Date: April 1999, on A&M happy turkey day guys & dolls... mindriot ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 17:27:18 EST From: UnknownGrl@AOL.COM Subject: Please don't squeeze the Charmin! returns This is my all time favorite somms post. I came across it today and decided to post it again.... this was way back in old skool somms (1-3-97)... you guys remember... the millions posts a day... that was fun! Maybe (if seth and others don't mind) we can all go back to the archives and find our fav somms post... Well... here is mine: From: SJordet@aol.com Subject: Please don't squeeze the Charmin! To all of you Sommsters out there who just skim through the posts (including myself) please read this one entirely. I think you will find it interesting. I have written here an abridged version of the Soundgarden Bible - I know it's a corny name, someone help me find something better to call this, please. OK here we go: I, Sarah, have settled happily for a small, unique, thoughtful, and special religion, known as Soundgardenism. It is not the most popular, only about 700 other people are faithful to this content, simple religion, but that is what makes it special. We are all one family, Soundgarden is our center of life, its music our prayers, its members our gods. We follow the simple guidelines of this religion happily, and would do anything, anything at all, to please our sincere, beautiful gods. As a member of this religion, I, just as anyone else who is a member, am never shaken away from my thoughts and feelings of love and thankfulness towards the gods and Their servants. These four gods are: Ben Shepherd, god of spit, leather pants, and messy hair - also known as "The Young One", "The Tall One", or "The Angry One": surely the god I worship on the highest level, for his sweet, crystal blue eyes, his long legs, his cute ass, and his large, sexy hands. 28 years old, he was born in Okinawa, Japan. Sommsters know him best for his angry style of playing, spitting on people, flipping them off - all ways he shows his affection towards us. (right?) Matt Cameron, god of carpal tunnel, fluid and easy going style, and contraversial hair color - also known as "The Approachable One", and "The Other Sex Toy": held on high regards by many for his friendliness, talent, and all- around adorableness. 34, he was born in San Diego and got his first big break singing "Puberty Love" for the stupid late-seventies movie "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" when he was 15. He plays very enthusiastically, big goofy smiles adorn his adorable face as he bashes away shamelessly. Chris Cornell, god of a loin-straining voice, large hands, and women: the blink of his eyes brings women to hysteria and is the subject of countless fantasies around the world. ANY bodily function - pissing, drooling, picking his nose - is considered sexy if Chris does it. There is too much to say about this 32 year old who was born in Seattle, so I will sum it up quickly - gorgeous face, gorgeous voice, gorgeous soul, and very nice nipples. Kim Thayil, god of mind-boggling solos, long hair and humor: Kim is Kim. 36, either born in Seattle or Chicago, Kim is phenominal and, well, everybody loves Kim. To appease the gods, you must follow these simple rules: 1. Worship the ground they walk upon. But do it from somewhat of a distance - it's impolite to come crashing into them, knocking them over and pinning their arms down while sucking the tongue out of their mouth and frantically unfastening their pants. 2. Bash Hootie and the Blowfish whenever you can. For example: "Their music all sounds the same", "They have no imagination", "Their videos are boring and supid as hell." I'm sure you can think of more. 3. Bash Bush whenever you can. Avoid as much contact as possible with them and their music. Or, get close enough to Gavin to stuff a lit firecracker down his front pocket and run before the jewels fly. That man needs to be castrated. 4. MEMORIZE, MEMORIZE, MEMORIZE! Memorize thier songs, memorize thier lyrics, memorize their basslines, memorize any body details (you can use a bit of imagination in this department). 5. Love Soundgarden and be kind to other people who love Soundgarden as much as you do. By following these simple guidelines, you shall be a true Sommster, and may you be baptized in the spit of The Tall One. So, whaddya think? Please let me know if anyone wants to add anything, or think of more names for people, or something you feel needs to be said and was left out. I'm not straining to hear it, of course, but his bass drum and floor tom aren't as full as I had hoped. nit-picky, I know. there are some good parts. I don't hate the record. I have to keep in mind that I've only had it for about four days and that this might just be first week blues. I'll probably change my mind. but I think I liked pj more when matt wasn't playing with them. I don't know if it is the new environment or the song catalogue or something else, but matt sounds tied down. whatever the future holds between matt and pj, I hope that it gives him more room to stretch out and find his niche. justin ps. reading over this, I notice how much my perceptions, standards and expectations of music have been totally ruined by listening to soundgarden. may the devil take all their souls. ------------- q: is it easy kicking so much ass? a: yes, because there is so much ass to be kicked out there. -matt cameron, 1998. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 20:32:50 -0500 From: Ugly Truth Subject: Re: Please don't squeeze the Charmin! returns >This is my all time favorite somms post. That was just another example of why I'm sad I wasn't on the list before mid-1997. It sounded like it really had something going there. . . .not to say that there isn't the occasional post nowadays that makes me think or makes a really good point...or is just so hilarious that I laugh a *bit* too hard(but that might be because i'm a TAD hyper), but everytime someone talks about the 'old' somms I regret not stumbling upon it sooner. . . Anyway, he's driving from the airport upon returning stateside and "Bleed Together" comes on. All of a sudden this poor guy who's hit with that motherload head on doesn't realize that he's driving too fast. He gets pulled over, but all he cares about while the cop is talking to him is listening to the DJ say the band's name that did this song. So he hears "Soundgarden, A-Sides". He buys it, and comes to this list asking which albums he should buy in which order, to take with him back out of the country. That is the ultimate first-Soundgarden experience. ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 25 Nov 1998 to 26 Nov 1998 ************************************************
