First was the thanking of Terry Bozzio, the famous drummer for Frank Zappa and Missing Persons, among multifarious others. Anyone know why this was here? Also, what is "451"? I've seen that number before. It's what Eric Matthews publishes his songs under (coincidentally, he's on Sub Pop). Although Jen did a pretty good job with 2 words(identity Crisis) BUTT I realize that is not fair since Kim was a young man and early musical offerings are sometimes scary! Anyone who has read notes from me knows I adore Kim. Always have. I think he is a great guitar player BUTT his personal musical taste and mine differ. He loves punk and loud thrashy type bands. He loves the Melvins for God's sake and they send me from the room screaming. It's just a matter of taste. I think he and the members of Soundgarden tempered and complimented each other. Left to his own devices I think Kim could lean toward punk again and IMO that type of music never allows for a guitarist to "shine" Kim was never a show off type guitarist but he played some cool lead guitar and excellent solos. So that's a good question...what is your favorite Kim solo? toni ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 11:31:13 -0500 From: Jamesetta Simpson Subject: Re: I don't need no wheels, I don't need no gasoline... > So that's a good question...what is your favorite Kim solo? toni As much as the UOK CD is my lease favorite, it does show case Kim's work. As you stated Toni, Kim tends to lean toward the punk side of music and UOK (IMHO) is more a punk style CD. I love the work he does on Black Days and BHS. BUTT my all time favorite Kim in the spot light is - JCP. Anyone who has seen SG live knows the wonderment of watching Kim down one beer after another as he brings JCP to a screaming end. Yes, any guitar player could do the same but, it's one of the things that makes JCP so magical. Oh and least I forget I love watching Kim go off in one of his trances - eyes closed, head moving ever so slightly back and forth. MMMMmm good SG moments... Obviously chris is not going to put an old soundgarden song on his album, but he will cover sg stuff during shows, i guarentee it. Who ever said they would be pissed if he covers sg material has no idea what theyre talking about. Chris cornell wrote 90% of sg's lyrics and about 70% of the music, so technically, and i hate to say this but chris cornell is the core of sg, he made it happen. the other 3 guys are amazing players, but chris made it work with his lyrics and music.Just think about what groups sg covered. Like black sabbath and led zeppelin. These were two bands kim vocally hated and disliked, but the music speaks for itself as will the past sg songs chris will cover. Sorry to disapoint those who are blind to what goes on in music. >> I may be wrong and I'm sorry if this seems like a flame, but who is this guy and why does he think he can tell us what we think? Why does he think he can tell us what we do and do not know. I've never seen this guy before, maybe he's new, but this is a bad way to start off. I, for one, would not be happy if Chris played Soundgarden because this is Chris's opportunity to make a name for HIMSELF. And why is he trying to make a name for himself? Because with Soundgarden, HE WAS NOT THE FOCUS OF THE BAND!!! Soundgarden was so equally amazing all around that it could not be said that he was the driving force; it was a complete team effort. Now it's his opportunity to say, "you saw what I can do with 3 of the best musicians in the world, now it's time for you to see what I can do by myself." No offense man, but get your head out your ass and come back down to earth. And never say that anyone here doesn't know about what goes on in music. I for one was offended by that. I know what it's like to play in front of a crowd/fans. It's pretty tough, you can't please everyone. Some people just don't get it. Mike This is getting pathetic. All I ever send to this list anymore is angry banter. This is really depressing. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 15:31:08 EST From: Mike Gallagher Subject: Re: CHRIS COVERING SOUNDGARDEN Actually, I take that back. If Chris plays Soundgarden, I won't mind, I'll just wonder why he resorted to such tactics when he will probably have amazing material of his own to play. Because, like George mentioned, there probably won't be enough songs on the new album for an entire concert Not all songs sound good live. If you can remember, some of Chris' favorite Soundgarden songs were rarely if ever performed live. And as far as I can remember from all the band->solo transitions, all solo artists play material from their old band. Cantrell did it, Ozzy did it, Glen Philips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) did it, Scott Weiland did it, Paul McCartney did it, Glenn Danzig did it, both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant did it, Sting did it... Maybe there are exceptions to this, but I can't think of a reason to suggest that Chris is going to be different, especially in the case of songs he wrote himself. He's going to write some music that people want to hear. I'm not saying he's selling out, but seriously, why even release your music publicly if you're writing it entirely for yourself? He's also going to write music that devoted fans would like to hear, and those will be on the album but probably not released as singles, and only rarely performed live. Of course, we have to understand this is all speculation on Chris himself. Eleven and whoever his drummer will be will complicate this prediction... What may happen is that he tries to play some old songs with Eleven and they screw them up. Who knows? -Bill ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 18:59:01 -0600 From: "Mike I. Jones" Subject: My little opinion. Dear Sommies, Ok, first off, I'd like to respond to the Chris performing SG songs. Come on!! I mean, anyone who says they don't want to hear SG material live again by ANY one of the members is full of it. I have confidence that Chris would do any SG song justice. I would be suprised if none of the members of SG (matt in particular) didn't play at least one show with him. And why would he choose a band that couldn't play by memory every SG song already. They've got Chris right there, why wouldnt he show them if he wanted to do a song of his from his SG days. And what about his side projects?? I for one would RELISH in hearing Wooden Jesus, Fresh Deadly Roses, or Seasons live. He has a progative to play any song he wrote, and I very much suppose he will if he wants to, why not?? Its incredulous he would just leave those songs behind and play just the new stuff on his album. And, as someone else pointed out, his concert would only be about 45 or 50 minutes if he played only the songs on his solo album, and covers eating up the rest of the time. Who would complain if he threw in a sg song in there??? Oh well, i suppose im be gettin. slitmeopenandsuckmy ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 22:13:41 EST From: Brent Ayres Subject: MY LAST STATEMENT ON CHRIS COVERING SOUNDGARDEN> OK first off whoever said"who is this guy" or whatever, is totally missing my point and doesnt really care about music, rather arguing over stupid things. What songs would you like to hear? Personally I don't care if he doesn't do any SG songs. I would rather hear old songs of HIS, like Angel on Fire, Fluttergirl, etc. That would be great... Jamie asked: > Which brings on another question -- what type of crowd do you > think Chris will draw??? I think in the beginning he may draw SG fans hoping to hear SG-II, but I think Chris will develop his own fan base. He's changed his physical style, and I suspect his music will be different than SG music. Its hard to say who those fans will be. Hopefully they won't all be 13 year old girls ;). 'cause each time he'd turn away..and sort of hide behind someone or something...christi turned to me and said.."this ain't a good sign" and i was like..oh nooo..well shit! it seemed like a good 20min before they actually took the stage..even though everything seemed to be in its place and there wasn't a "roadie" type to be seen..except..this one guy...we both swear on a stack of bibles that the resemblance between him and ben is uncanny..they had to be brothers ..they just had to....he was lanky...same hair color..and style via '92...same eyes..same smile..hell he even played like ben! so christi asks him and he's like "no, but i have been mistaken for mark lanegan's brother!" we took that as cynicism of course...uh huh, yet another clue! after their set...they ran for the hills...christi and i patiently waited by the bar for a good 1/2 hour till the hall and bar area cleared... we hoped that ben would eventually make his way downstairs.. and believe me.. he didn't feel rushed! while waiting..we spotted a few other notables frequently seen around hollywood.. duff from GnR...he looked like skeletor..he must be on something..i never would have been able to point him out.. thank god christi was present. oh, and eric erlandson showed up as well...i wish i could have introduced myself.. he seemed like a really nice, easy going guy.. and no...courtney wasn't there..thank god! so we waited and waited..and after some pacing, and a trip or 2 to the bathroom, ben appears at the top of the staircase...and down he comes... at that point i just felt so physically uncomfortable and sick.. fuck, i couldn't stand correctly!..i was so incredibly nervous. he has on this kick-ass leather jacket.. it was a floor duster that spanned the entire length of his body.. only a man of that height could have carried that off successfully.. and holy shit did he ever.... he looked fantastic!! it seemed to us at that time that he was just about to say his "goodbyes" and exit out the back door... so we knew that it was now or never... i knew we had to do it..but i was so stone cold..i was almost hesitant about it.. not to mention he had just started up a conversation.. and we didn't want to interrupt. so we made our way up to him...so we're directly in front of him right! but he doesn't look at us..so basically we're waiting for ben to shift his attention away from that guy..and towards us..finally he does...and christi reintroduces herself...he looks puzzled at first...then he relents with a smile.. now it's my turn... and she introduces me to him... he shifts his beer to his opposite hand to shake mine.. i don't remember what i said exactly.. but i had failed to give him my name by accident..and he pauses, leans down and says "what was your name?" and i responded. christi keeps the ball rolling by asking him about his house etc. and for the next fives minutes they (ben, christi, and that guy) discuss his home, bainbridge, and oil wells...i didn't know what the fuck to say...so i didn't...i listened..i tired desperately to think of something to ask him in relation to the conversation... but i just couldn't do it...the conversation was ending and i could feel him sort of moving away from the group.. right then and there i knew what i was going to ask him...but before i could.. he turns to me and says..."hey you want this?" referring to his corona...a surge of electricity passed through my entire body and throughout my fingertips...i was like "hell yeah" and as he turned around i grabbed him and said "wait i have to ask you something...are you in anyway related to that guy?" pointing to the ben double onstage closing shop..and he said "no" and then he said something like " i consider it a compliment to be compared to that guy though." and he walked off towards the bar...there i stood..with his beer in my hand wondering if he had taken a sip before offering it to me...either way i took a big chug... "my lips are touching his...i thought to myself!" as you can expect... that corona bottle went straight into the arms of my china hutch!! it was last call...and we took advantage...we walked over to the opposite side of the bar...i took a step back..to catch one last glance of him..and as i did i caught him and his friend staring at the two of us.. and as i looked in his direction..he looked away.. our evening with ben ended right about there...i couldn't have asked for a better finale! -cats4kim ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 16 Nov 1998 to 17 Nov 1998 ************************************************
