[thanks to angela for this info] I had to laugh at this review! It's from the Rocket, about the Gossamer Wings show at the Satyricon in Portland Oct. 23 > "It's up to you to guess which one of us was in Soundgarden" joked Gossamer > Wings frontman Pete Krebs, a reference to his new band's debut at NXNW when > bass player Ben Shepherd slouched onstage in a cameo role. Tonight's lineup > didn't include Mr. Shepherd (the source of mucho buzz among the star-watcher > set), but that didn't much matter, as Krebs and his outfit threw down a fiery > set of stylistically diverse roots-rock. Well, of course the line-up didn't include Mr. Shepherd this particular night! He was in Spain!! In the critic's eye, TOTD was successful because of later bands, which doesn't make it a good album. People will also say that it is a good album, but TOTD didn't tour much...and released one video. And, let's not forget it was a one time deal. So, TOTD...won't be on a best of list...maybe Best Of Seattle...but there are much better music that has come out in the 90's that kicks TOTD's ass. And for any other Soundgarden album, we all have to agree in the majority of people that no one heard of Soundgarden until Superunknown was released. The majority of anyone out there will also corralate Soundgarden with Superunknown. Maybe the best of list was not only for Best Album ever...but also had to have best commercial success or best known album...I'm gonna bet that Nirvana's got a hold on the top 5, and I haven't looked at the articles... Dave P.S. Flames saying "you suck" will be deleted. Anything else is excepted. MAGAZINE We can't let the commercial success of an album affect our own views on its brilliance. Most CDs that sell well do so because they are written in a catchy way. For all of the bands like Soundgarden who spend years blending their influences and taking their own styles to make a distinct sound, there are PLENTY of bands who listen to the radio, take all of the elements they hear, and write & record a record which will simply be popular. If magazines like Alternative Press, Rolling Stone, and the like are going to concentrate on these bands only, then fuck 'em. Don't listen to them. When was the last time you read an article on one of your favorite bands in a magazine like that and you actually learned something about the band? How often has it occured that the same musicians were on the cover of all of these magazines at the same time? These magazines are out to sell copies, not bring new information. Rely on "underground" sources such as Seth's site, this list, and smaller zines to get your information. Fuck the money-grubbing yuppies that write for, print, and publish these magazines. I know there are probably some decent columns in these magazines, but as a whole, their opinions shouldn't matter all that much. Don't get me wrong, BMF is spectacular, amazing...(millions of other wonderful adjectives)...But I mean nothing tops the almighty Superunknown. And besides without Superunkown, Soundgarden probably wouldn't be on that list at all, they'd never even be considered. Superunknown, though there was plenty of amazing work to preceed it, officially put Soundgarden on the map to stay. Superunknown owned 94, which may be the reason that BMF isn't recongnized. BMF was released at a very difficult time (as was Temple). There was too much mainstream competition from Ten, Nevermind, and Dirt for Badmotorfinger to be respected for its overall excellence, while Superunknown came out of nowhere and blew everyone away...everyone. It's always been between the two as to which is the definitive Soundgarden album. I'm going to have to go with Badmotorfinger for that one, since it seems to be the culmination of all Soundgarden was trying to do in their early career. Still, I'm a sucker for experimentation, so I prefer listening to Superunknown most of the time. I called my Chris Cornell site "Black Days" because that is one of the only songs I've heard that truly never gets old.
