If you know anything about the music industry in general, you would know that this fact isn't true.>> Didnt Matt say something about his favorite song (Christi...which he described as being shot with a machine gun, while smelling a pretty flower, or something) not being finished in time? << Like fucking RIGHT! How dare you blast DOTU, which in your opinion sucked, in front of SOMMS. >> I dont know...I think that it is perfectly reasonable for every fan to have their own opinion about a band that they care about....and I dont feel like any fan should obligingly LOVE or agree with everything that their favorite band does. Personally, I liked DOTU very much (BMF will always remain my favorite) and thought that there were some brave risks that they took on that album, which they probably knew might not be widely accepted by all of their fan base. However, I would hope that everyone on this list would feel free enough to be able to express their honest opinions to me and the other people on this list (even if they didnt agree). And I think that fans have the right to talk about the emperor, especially when he appears, from their perspective, to be naked. << I am SO supprised that Seth hasn't come here personnally and stop this, but he is a busy guy, and he can't be everywhere at once. But if he was here, Danny Bolton would be off SOMMS. >> I dont advocate senseless ruthlessness (although, I have definitely said things that I am not proud of), but I definitely dont condone turning this list into some utopian society, where anyone who disagrees will be exiled as some kind of heretical pariah. But then again, I guess that is actually just a version of my own little "utopian society" which probably only better, in my eyes. I didnt make it, im not over 21 (damn liquior laws). Here is the setlist: MFC, Habit, Corduroy, Immortality, Spin the Black Circle, All Those Yesterdays, Leatherman, Leaving Here, Do The Evolution, Soldier of Love. Now the thing that gets me about it is, our beloved Matt was behind the skins for this event. Now, wouldnt you think since the tour is over; that Jack would want to get back in the groove with PJ. Want to know what i think? I bet Matt stays, the whole tour ed and the boys have been praising his work, and everyone that has seen the shows has said that Matt has done a great job. It just doesnt make sence to my why Matt is still playing if the tour is off. Maybe there will be some news soon, hopefully some good news (no not the reunion tour). -Nick aka Spackle ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 06:04:13 EDT From: Kathleen Burrows Subject: my ears are gonna explode, but hey-- i got the caffine-suicide love baby!! <> all i have to say to that is: BULLSHIT. has ANYONE heard of God Smack?? You could say the same things about Soundgarden as you are saying about these new artists. I'm not defending these new bands. I don't listen to them. I've never even heard of them. Soundgarden had a unique sound for their time, but there are pieces which can be traced to other bands at other times. I think we should stop pretending that Soundgarden invented rock and roll. They reinvented it like others did before them, and other will after them. I'm love how SG picks the best songs to end their albums with (except for New Damage....I don't really like the song...). But, does anyone else question some of the song transitions? Seeing as how some of the song endings on DotU are cut short (most don't fade out slowly, and are faded out a litte rushed. Zero Chance is a good example), I think that the total track time of DotU (65 minutes, 56 seconds) has some significance. Either that, or it's just some cool playing around with track times by the guys :). I had an idea, that 65:56 was the total # of days that Soundgarden was together, but that was thrown out after doing the math. MUSIC: raw, dark and spartan. no wankerly solos. guitar, drums, bass w/ chris' screeching up front. the ribbon in his hair was his way of goofing around w/ the long- hair notion of supreme manly-ness. sounds like your freind did a great job (and alot of fun) making this in his basement. DO THEY FIT? yes ULTRAMEGA OK inside COVER mainly: this is the one i feel is most accurate. it has kim, matt, and hiro all are focusing on something away from the camera's veiw. again in dark, monochrome setting. on cover, chris is shown using his les paul as well (this is when he started doing rhythm guitar). the marshall 1/2 stack in the left, inside picture isn't kims or chris'. kim's really using the small one in front of it. the pictures aren't as kinetic as on SL. MUSIC: in my oppinion, this album is so wierd it could have been made in any decade. however, everyone seems focused and we find more 2 guitar parts. it's still dark and in some parts, even murky (production wise). the sound isn't very big, but the songs aren't hinderred at all. they may look indie but they don't have to sound it.and they don't. DO THEY FIT? yep. LL COVER: keeps the monochrone motif, but looks slightly more glossed over. funny headbangin' chris picture on front. the safron (spelling?) trim around the lettering brightens it up, however. MUSIC: a bit lighter (production, wise) than previous albums. tongues planted in cheek w/ cheesy metal riffs on BDS. apart from that, it's a pretty sinister album. DO THEY FIT? nar. BADMOTORFINGER COVER: a dark, furious, storm of movment under a buzzsaw-like symbol and simple, yet interesting, font for "SOUNDGARDEN". on the back, faces are given to this "soundgarden" mechine. MUSIC: post the death of his long time best freind, andy wood, this album is angery. the addition of ben makes for new melodies, previously unheard from sg. simple (it's how the play it, though, that's amazing) riff based, mechine- like g/b/d's trudge and run under the furious 'natural' voice of chris. dry production, and kim neglecting his delay and flange pedals, and adding chris' increased guitar duties add to the heaviness. even in it's low toned spot (mindriot) it's very kinetic. arguably, their best album ever. DO THEY FIT? yup SUPERUNKNOWN COVER: black. ghostly, distorted figures in vibrant orange/red. the bottom is a picture of a forest fire (turned upside down). "soundgarden" printed frankly at the top. it's dark and trippy. MUSIC: it's not about darkness, but getting through it to better (not bitter) oneself. it's even darkly comedic in many spots (BHS, various lyrics) and uplifting & sunny (head down, kickstand, superunknown). it's cofortable (not content, however), and knows who it is. so why would it need its name in big letters? DO THEY FIT? darn tootin'! DOTU COVER: is the "soundgarden" fading, or is it just subtle? a mature design starring the silloettes of the members before a backdrop. it's shadowy and warm, yet worn feeling. the members have distance between them. MUSIC: for a last album, it was deffinitely a high note (my oppinion, anyway). the songs don't feel rushed even when they're going at 312 bpm. they feel immediate and warm. not as "bruced" as previous outings, because they "bruced it themselves" and knew what they wanted. some would argue that they were mere shadows of themselves by the time they said "roll it!" on this one. that's it. no A SIDES on this it's late and i've got school tomarrow. if this was too long, well you made it to the end, so quit bellyaching! thanks charlie ps who wanted stolen prayers tabs for their site? --------------91F77E9EE4B5CD17078470D8-- ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 11 Oct 1998 to 12 Oct 1998 ************************************************
