Pahati" Subject: SG on DVD The other day I was at a video rental place that had a DVD machine and TV monitor set up for demonstration purposes. They were playing a disc of popular music videos. At first I didn't pay much attention to it but then was surprised to see the vid for BUTOW. The disc was entitiled "A&M Visions". I wasn't able see the track list so I don't know what else is on it. Anybody know anything about this? My guess is its some kind of promotional release. Whatever it is I'm going to try to get that disc from that video store, even though I don't own a DVD player. Its likely such a pristine copy of that video may never be commercially available (lets hope not!). Looks like I'll have to get a DVD player now. -OJ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 14:02:50 +0100 From: SuperUnknown Subject: once and for all Ok Sommsters I'm sick of everyone asking the same questions. Wait Matt.....let me get my crystal ball polished up so I can see it real good! Or maybe I'll just give the Psychic hot line a quick call. I think I get 3 mins free don't I??? I hate to tell you this BUTT even if we had the right and true answers to those questions(which of course none of us do) there would be 7 more to take their place just to annoy you!! :-) toni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 12:49:27 -0500 From: tonerkin Subject: Words on Matt The local paper down in Northwest Indiana had an article on Pearl Jam yesterday with a mention of Matt: PEARL JAN LEARNS TO RELAX AS IT ROCKS by Brian McCollum (Knight Rider Newspapers) Just as the group has kicked back on a personal level, the music has been heated up. With the departure of drummer Jack Irons, who played loose and just behind the beat, Pearl Jam lost the funky edge he had laid under the group's sound since 1994. In his place, at least temporarily, is revered drummer, Matt Cameron(ex-Soundgarden), whose style is packed with an extra wallop. "Typically, Matt plays on top of the beat a little bit more and he throws fills in really weird places- not always on the 4's-and that's been really fun for me" says Ament, who with rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard locks in with Carmeron on the bottom end. "The first 10 shows of the tour was all about just watching him- alot of eye contact-and trying to figure out where he was going to put things. And he still puts things in different places every night." Cameron is the group's fourth drummer, and Ament says the band will make a decision after this tour on his future. Much of that will depend on the status of Irons, who bowed out in the spring while announcing he was battling manic depression. Ament says the group doesn't want separate studio and live drummers. that's it! toni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 15:52:09 EDT From: Matt Hammons Subject: Re: Cover me! It's not a matter of me wanting chris to cover anything, he NEEDS to cover "25 Miles" by Edwin Starr. I would f-ing die. I, for one, will be really REALLY surprised if Matt does not become a permanent member of Pearl Jam after this tour. It just seems to be in the cards and more that on subtle hint has been cast in that direction. HOWEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is just my opinion, and nothing else. Lance ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Sep 1998 19:18:23 -0400 From: jenny grover Subject: back with tales to tell!! I'm back from Seattle. Got home late Thurs. night. We saw and did a lot, at Bumbershoot and elsewhere. I do plan to chronicle my adventures on my webpage at some point, with pictures and all, but that will be a while. I knew you all would want to know the Soundgarden related stories right away. While we were there we got to see Bell at the Breakroom and hang backstage with Damon Romero and Andy Miller. They had some interesting things to say. Damon asked me if I had gotten to see Pearl Jam with Matt playing, and I told him yes, and we all talked about how much life Matt's playing has added to the songs and the show, and how Jack is more of a background player. Damon asked if Matt was going to join PJ, and we speculated that maybe if he was asked he would, and Andy said it would certainly be in PJ's best interest to get him if they could. We agreed it was cool just to see Matt playing with somebody, and I said that I thought Matt couldn't stand to not be playing. Andy said, "Matt loves to tour. He just loves to tour. He liked touring with Ben, so that tells you!" heh-heh... Then Andy talked about looking at Matt's hands after he had played a SG show, and how his hands were completely calloused, all the way down the length of all his fingers and everything. He also said that Matt uses really small sticks. He was playing Andy's drums one time, and Andy says he doesn't use very big sticks either, and said, "Don't you have any smaller sticks?" Andy teased him, "You wimp!", but he said the fact of the matter is that Matt is just that good that he can play that hard with small sticks. Andy went on to talk about seeing SG at Bumbershoot just after Ben had joined. Damon said that he had talked to Ben not long before he joined SG, and that Ben had said, "Man, I'm gonna quit music. It just sucks away all my time and everything, and it's not worth it." Damon said, "No, you can't do that. Don't say that." About 3 weeks later he joined SG. Andy said it was because Ben was really bummed out about Nirvana not letting him play. They kept saying they would work him in "maybe next show", but then they wouldn't. They taught him the songs and all and kept saying they'd have him play, but they never did. Andy thinks Kurt didn't want someone playing who had his own ideas about how things should be played or who would have a strong influence over their sound, and he and Damon agreed that there was no way Ben could not have been a strong influence. I mentioned that we had seen Golden Delicious and Pete Krebs solo at Bumbershoot and Damon asked if Ben had played with them, that he knew Ben had been playing with Pete, but not which band (Pete is in several projects). Andy said that Ben had been playing "really normal bass" with Pete at his solo shows, but Pete was entirely solo when we saw him, just him and a guitar and no one else. I asked if he knew if Ben was on Pete's upcoming album (which will be his 3rd solo) and he said yes, he is. So watch for that! I don't know the title. Andy said they had just finished recording it, but Pete mentioned it at his solo show like it would be out in a few weeks. Since Damon has known Jason since elementary school, I asked him if he really did join the army. He said yes, that he was in special forces for something like 3 years (whatever the minimum enlistment is) and that at 25 years old he was the old man of the unit! All the others were like 18 and 19, because it is so physically grueling. After he got out he took the money he had made in the army and traveled all over China and Tibet, just to do it. Then when he returned, he and his biological father, whom he apparently had never known before, went on a fishing expedition in the Bering Sea. He now lives in Bellingham. So, Jason has had an interesting life. Damon said it's really unfair that everyone disses him as the guy who got kicked out of Nirvana and Soundgarden, "not unfair that he got kicked out, but that that's all people think of him". While we were sitting in the bar talking, Chris Karr was there, so we got to meet him. As for sightings, Ben was at the Screaming Trees show, sidestage for a while, and he is in the background of some of my photos, and some of my friends' photos. So are John McBain and Scott McCaughey. There is also a guy in the back of some of my photos who I swear is Layne Staley. Saw Brian Wood at the OK, too. I'll let you all know when I get my journal and photos up on my page.
