I would hear matt cameron perform 'jesus christ pose' live or listen to will calhoun break 'information overload'. truly inspiring stuff. I'd ask myself how anyone could possibly *do* that. then I would hear jack add his beat to something like 'tremor christ' and think not only how much I missed dave a., but how much jack really stank. I've since come to realise that jack irons does not stink. he simply has his own groove and his own tendencies, most of which sound relatively simple. this is not necessarily a bad thing. jack is definitely an above average drummer, who has worked through hardship to make music that he loves. he may not be as technically proficient as some, but his work ethic should not be discounted. nb: we have been *severely* spoiled by matt cameron's work. justin ------------- q: is it easy kicking so much ass? a: yes, because there is so much ass to be kicked out there. -matt cameron, 1998. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 09:59:20 -0400 From: DeeDee Kamp Subject: Re: don't drink from poisoned cup... > >nb: we have been *severely* spoiled by matt cameron's work. > >justin Speaking of being spoiled by Matt Cameron's work, I was able to wallow in that privilege again last Monday night. PJ played here in Raleigh, NC and it was nothing short of fucking incredible. Realizing this isn't a PJ list, I'll reserve myself to Matt specifically...He played an awesome show, I like(d) Jack Irons, but I gotta say that Matt fits in real nicely with PJ and if Jack should decide not to come back to PJ, it wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit to see Matt step in as their permanent drummer. For the hoochies of the list, if any still exist, Matt was wearing his standard uniform of a tank top and shorts. He (and the whole band) seemed to be in a really great mood for the show, he smiled a lot, which was nice to see. I can't say I remember him smiling a whole lot at the Soundgarden shows that I have been to, but he was really grinning Monday night. His drum kit seemed to be a lot smaller than what I remember him using for Soundgarden shows, not knowing much about the technicalities of a drum kit, that is all that I can say about that...it's size didn't stop him from having a huge sound tho. I gotta say, it was really great seeing Matt again live and seeing him having such a good time playing. Hey Y'all, I just saw PJ here in Atlanta last night, and I must say it was an incredible show. The band was very tight. As DeeDee said, Matt fit in quite well. He was, needless to say, nothing short of amazing. As for comparisons to Jack Irons, I'd never seen PJ live before. Compared to the albums, Matt was as good or better, and Matt's drums sound better. They have such a cool timbre. Matt's drums have to be some of the best-sounding drums I've ever heard. It was cool to see a band in such a great venue. The sound at Lakewood Amphitheatre was awesome. It sure beats the sound at the ol' barn back in Winnipeg. Anyway, Eddie introduced Matt early on in the show, and at the very end during the first encore, Eddie plugged Wellwater. He recommended checking them out and buying their album. Now that's some serious positive publicity. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Sep 1998 16:54:31 EDT From: Charlie Mccutcheon Subject: kerrang+skinyard In a message dated 98-09-01 16:49:16 EDT, you write: did sg ever do the kerrang challenge? where is everybody? got the deep six comp. i like the original versions of heretic and skin yard's throb (w/ matt). speaking of skin yard, does anybody who has sy's on hallowed ground think ben (not shepherd) sounds just like the post bmf chris? same vocal effects and all. i recommend them highly. awaiting the new wwc album. charlie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 00:26:31 EDT From: Evan Frees Subject: Re: screaching falsetto Oh yeah, "Slaves & Bulldozers" is very hard to sing, I can only do it if my throat is perfectly clear, and even then it still hurts to do it more than once or twice. I've sung just about every SG song there is, and this song is one of the hardest. Personally, it's easier for me to do "Say Hello 2 Heaven" than it is to sing S&B. ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 2 Sep 1998 to 3 Sep 1998 **********************************************
