Gee, Ben only wrote the music to half the songs on DOTU, rescued FOBD from the scrap heap by rewriting the bassline in a way that finally pulled that song together, suggested using Blind Dogs (which was in danger of the scrap heap too) on the Basketball Diaries soundtrack, suggested using Chief Sealth's letter as the lyrics to Into the Void, wrote Head Down and Half and probably originated the CGCGGE tuning that Chris later used in BIMH and PN, wrote Show Me, Somewhere and the music to Face Pollution, Slaves and Bulldozers, and HIV Baby, contributed to Jesus Christ Pose... I had it fully planned to keep my nose out of this arguement, but I feel I might be able to shed some light on this subject, as I see both (three?) sides of this. First of all, from a collecters standpoint, I can see as how this b-sides thing may be "robbing" us of our "glory" or whatever terms you wish to put that in. I've worked long and hard to collect the b-sides I have, and dont regret an instant (or dollar) of it. But keep in mind, I am not disposed to hostility towards this project. >From the not-so-lucky's prospective, this album is a blessing, a diamond in the rough. I hate to speak for people, but I feel the need to bring my good friend Ang into this. Ang lives in Kentucky and try as she might, can *not* get her hands on b-sides. They just dont carry them. I would never in my life dream of keeping these jewels from the needy's hands. Thought I collect, it is really about the songs. I have countless tapes of things I have to find, and willingly and do tape things for friends, because they deserve to hear the music. That's what it is about. It may sound more impressive to say "I have Toy Box on 10" Flower yellow vinyl" than it is to say "I bought it on B-Sides" but it is a hell of a lot better than saying "I've never heard it, I cant find it." And that's comes my final point. Who cares where you get the songs, so long as you have them? My two dollars. -Arden ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Aug 1998 03:15:10 -0700 From: Jason Thompson Subject: Soundgarden Tape Trading Page This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0004_01BDCCB1.E7B4B7A0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable The Soundgarden tape trading page is no longer up for those who have = been looking for it. Maybe I should clarify myself: Ben had nothing to do with Screaming Life, UMOK, or LTL. How could anyone possibly say he has contributed as much as Chris, Matt, or Kim? I wasn't dissing on him, I think he's great. But the fact is, he's not an original, and he missed out on three albums. And yes, he has done a lot of good for the band, I'll give you that. However this is usually only done when a band is touring, or as with nirvana when somebody dies. they seem to do a nirvana special every year on the anniversary. For SG though it may have to be somebody more recognisable like chris or maybe kim. So, its probably obvious where this is leading. if you really want a video compilation, - go out and assassinate your least favourite SG ex-member today. rob ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 21 Aug 1998 to 22 Aug 1998 ************************************************
