Oh, and I vote for Slaves And Bulldozers as most powerful song. That "bleed your heart out" wail is so empowering. I read a number of the bios on that site after seeing that, they are all from that same stupid book that some creep is undoubtedly making money off of, and many of them had inaccuracies and loaded statements in them. Pathetic! Somebody should sue that author's ass. I'm agreeing with whoever said they all were. But if I had to narrow it down I'd have to say Overfloater. There's something about the song that just wallows in emotion, and though overlooked by many on the initial run-through of Down on the Upside, I believe is one of the best songs on the album. I never took notice to it until more than a year after I got the CD. It's a song that doesn't jump out at you- you have to really listen. It is so sad, so emotional, so amazing-- it's incredible. But I'll also have to agree with Niki (it was you, wasn't it Niks?) who said 4th of July. That song is so dark and disturbing.. only Soundgarden could pull off something like that ;) Arden's Two Cents. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 01:10:20 -0700 From: murk Subject: Hey Folks, Just thought you would like to check out this page I came across while surfing.. If you are talking power chords and sheer power of the music it might be one song but if you are talking the power to make you weep or make you see things in a new light that is something else again. For me one of the most lyrically powerful songs is Hands All Over. Now some of you are shaking your heads like that is the most stupid thing you have ever heard. But I have a personnel feeling toward this song. I work for a large oil company(that just got larger yesterday when BP bought Amoco) I work in a refinery and I struggle with my conscious on a daily basis. The words to Hands All Over Hands all over the coastal waters The crew men thank her Than lay down there oily blanket Hands all over the inland first In striking motion trees fall down Like dying soldiers Put your hands away You're going to kill your mother And I love her. I work for a large polluter(better than they use to be but still not great) I control some of the processes and try my best not to pollute Lake Michigan or the air that I to have to breath but it still doesn't feel right sometimes. So this song always moves me when I hear it because I know what Chris is trying to say and I once again examine my conscience than I examine my pay stub and go back to work! :-o Can't buy SG stuff and have a computer with internet access if I don't have a cash flow!!!! The profits from the Loud Love Motel have been off lately! toni ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 16:43:05 EDT From: Rachel Potter Subject: burden in my hand late last night while i couldn't sleep i thought about burden in my hand... and compared it to marilyn manson... the line "kill you health and kill yourself..." just sounded like something he'd say... then i thought about the song. what do you all think about the song? to me that song just doesn't seem to all go together... do you think chris wrote the lyrics at diffferent settings? please interpret this song. -rachel http://www.angelfire.com/fl/unknowgrl/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Aug 1998 19:14:09 EDT From: Rachel Potter Subject: bimh interp Here goes my interp of burden in my hand... it's my first ever... so bear with me... i don't think that this song is about one topic... so i might go off on some tangents... and you must remember that i'm 16 and i'm kind of relateing this to my life... even though i know that chris didn't write it when he was 16. Follow me into the desert As thirsty as you are Crack a smile and cut your mouth And drown in alcohol *** Okay... this guy goes to a party and see's his crush... he wishes that she'd stay sober in case something happened he wouldn't be "takeing advantage of her"... hence staying dry in the desert... even though she wants to get drunk... and she just smiles and drinks anyway. Cause down below the truth is lying Beneath the riverbed~ (i think that this line was just thrown in, cause i don't understand it... well... i do, it just doesn't go with my story... mayebe he ment down the river... but it didn't sound right... that would make sense; telling her was just around the corner) *** He think's this will be the night that he reveals to her that he has a crush on her. So quench yourself and drink the water That flows below her head *** I'm not sure about this... i have a very perverse interp for it... but i won't write it down Oh no there she goes Out in the sunshine the sun is mine *** She has gone out of the house they were in and into the sunshine... he claims the sun to be his, so he feels like he's shareing something with her. I shot my love today would you cry for me I lost my head again would you lie for me I left her in the sand just a burden in my hand I lost my head again would you cry for me *** He wonders what she would do for him... crying and lying show signs of love... he thinks of his untold love as a burden... he's thinking about her all the time and his mind is just totally preoccupied. Close your eyes and bow you head I need a little sympathy Cause fear is strong and love's for everyone Who isn't me ***This first line he's telling himself to close his eyes etc... cause he's ashamed that he's unable to tell her how he feels.... because he can't tell her how he feels than he doesn't deserve her love... infact that he doesn't deserve anyone's love. So kill your health and kill youself And kill everything you love *** He's saying this to himself And if you live you can fall to pieces And suffer with my ghost *** He says this to her... because he believes that it would be her fault if he killed himself. Just a burden in my hand Just an anchor on my heart Just a tumor in my head *** He thinks of her (the object of his affection) as a burden, an anchor and a tumor~ because he thinks about her so much it's kind of created this aching (tumor) in his head... and it's dragged his heart down like an anchor. And i'm in the dark *** He's left sitting all by himself... in the dark The moon is glued to a pictue of heaven And all the little pigs have god *** He looks up at the moon thinks of the times he could've been having with her... it would be like heaven to him. I don't get this last line... but i think it has something to do with cops... maybe the cops broke up the party and justified their evil doing by telling themselves that "god would've wanted me to do it" Well, that's it... i hope you liked it... it was my first, and maybe my last... but i had fun with it! -rachel http://www.angelfire.com/fl/unknowngrl/ingex.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 01:01:44 EDT From: Brian Coursen Subject: BIMH and OJ Simpson! ? ! ? My theory on Burden has always been that it was a story about a guy who kills his wife/girlfriend, perhaps somewhat inspired by OJ or other people who have killed their wives. The OJ part is mostly because the first night I ever saw Soundgarden live was the night of the infamous Bronco chase, with Chris giving us updates on what was happening. He is asking his friends or a single friend (Al Cowlings?) to support him as thirsty/desperate as they/he might be he needs them to go into the desert despite their thirst in order to help him. "oh no there she goes out in the sunshine the sun is mine" I always interpreted this to mean that he is jealous. He is writing about the feelings of a small man who wants the spotlight so bad that he is jealous of anyone else standing in the sun, a sun that I there for everybody. OJ was jealous of his ex-wife he was the big star and he was jealous. Maybe Chris is admitting to himself that he sometimes gets a tinge of jealousy when Susan is out in the spotlight, the spotlight is his but he is also admitting how silly it is. I realize how stupid it is to speculate Chris's intention in writing but there it is anyway. The song is about a man who wants his friends to cry and lie for him because he lost his head again. OJ wants his friends and lawyers to help him even though he did something horrible he wants their sympathy. "Cause fear is strong and loves for everyone who isn't me" OJ was afraid to be alone without his wife and he is trying to gain sympathy by basically saying that no one loves me, and that is why I did what I did. That's my own little theory anyway. ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ IF THIS ISN'T MAKING SENSE IT DOESN'T MAKE IT LIES ^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^*^ ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 12 Aug 1998 to 13 Aug 1998 ************************************************
