Secondly: Speaking of SG Poster Spotting, I just saw Joe's Apartment for the first time and he's got an SG/PJ poster in his room. Finally: Which issue of Hit Parader was supposed to have an article about Chris? The one I read on the newsstand yesterday had no mention of him. All those calm, quiet, mature members who are looking for substance on the ml and actually contribute to it's worth, don't bother reading any further. Ayesha, I guess you are too young to realize that posts like this contribute to the pollution of the list. I agree with you that the ml is a place to talk about Soundgarden, but you are participating in the very thing you complain about. I suppose you haven't been a member of the list long enough to remember when it was fun (before the band broke up) because if you have been then you would know that the only way to deal with stupid shit like the total request thread is just to delete every ridiculous post. I wonder myself why I even bother with the list anymore but then every once in a while I read a post about web sites selling SG items or someone who is trading vinyl or about when new material will be released or a well thought out interp of a song and it makes filtering through all the bull shit worth it every day. But I really hope that you don't honestly believe that anyone is intimidated by your name calling and tough language or that anybody really gives a shit about you unsubscribing because we don't and it is unnecessary for you to tell us that you are. Just do it and come back when you are mature enough to not let all the other babies on the list ruin your day. It's just a goddamned mailing list for Christ's sake. If you get this worked up over something like that, you're gonna have a stroke before you turn 17. Barbara (without any groovy little nickname) p.s. Hey Sommsters! How ya doin? Although I'm relatively new to the SOMMS list(which is probably why I've never heard of Much Music before), I have to say that basically everyone on this list is going to have an opinion on a particulular subject matter that diverges from the rest of the bunch in one way or another. However, I think it's entirely possible to state one's point of view without attacking someone else's. I mean this is SOMMS for cryin' out loud, not some political debate of some kind!!! Since when is grammar important to a Soundgarden fan? I seem to recall a certain guy by the name of Chris Cornell not going particularly far in his academic studies.(which hasn't seem to hurt him all that much;the man's a genius in more ways than one) Anyway, what I'm tryin to say is that we owe it to ourselves to try and pull this thing together! This is, atleast, one of the problems with the direction the list has been going. I'm staying on, because maybe someday there will be intelligent discussions again on the meanings of songs, or the artistic direction Cornell will go, without reverting to "dream bands" which are basically assortments of people's favorite band members instead of realistic, and cohesive groups. When I joined the list, it was in shambles. People took themselves way too seriously. The IQs of posters were bottomed out. Then the Snodgrass brothers picked up the pace, along with Koggle, et al, and I learned more about Soundgarden then I ever even wanted to know. For months, there was basically no flaming, and when there was, it was a single comment and just ignored by everyone. So here's to Kathleen being able to politely use more toned down language, and the rest of you to be less sensitive to the comments of people who really don't even know you. -Bill ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 19:42:21 -0400 From: Deborah Servey Subject: Re: ENOUGH ALREADY!!!! I have been subscribed to this list since December of '96. I have been told by a friend that I had subbed just after it's peak of greatness had ended, but I still thought it was near excellent. About ninety-nine percent of the posts were Soundgarden-related (what a shocker) , people were civil to each other, and even when an obnoxious thread was dragging on forever, the posts concerning it were somewhat thought-out and actually contributed something to the list. The conversations were usually friendly, and most of the posters did not feel the need to resort to obscene profanity (no I'm not referring directly to Ayesha). Even when a pair held a grudge against one another, they did not insult everything the other said publicly, and were open-minded enough (usually) to agree with the other person or find good points in what they had to say if they deemed it so. Yes I have had my share of retarded posts (this included?), but I quickly caught up to civilization, thus lowering their frequency. I would also like to add that how long someone has been subscribed to the list is not the equivelant of their worth as a SOMMSter. EVERYONE was a newbie one time or another. A few points I'd like to respond to: Barbara wrote: >I guess you are too young to realize that posts like this contribute to >the pollution of the list. Sarah This one's been responded to a lot... and very well should be. Yes I know I'm perpetuating this somewhat... but my post has something very unique that most lately haven't... Soundgarden content! 1. When the hell is the new Hater CD coming out?? And does anyone know what it's going to be titled? 2. I just saw the commercial for the Miller Genuine Draft Blind Date thing - where you win tickets to a concert with big bands but you don't know who they are until they hit the stage. I wasn't too impressed with hearing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy were there, but I was kind of disapointed when I heard about Garbage... anyway I remember reading a long time back that Soundgarden did one of the first ones. Wouldn't you just wet your pants if you had been there? Or do I have problems... 3. I read New Metal Crown a while back (it was okay, would have been better if the author had acutally known the band) and heard that while they were recording for Superunknown, they wrote a song called "A Broom" but never even recorded it. The title intrigues me a lot, anyone have any input as to what it may be like? 4. I've been listening to DOTU for the first time in a very long while, and has anyone else noticed that at the end of Pretty Noose, that it starts again? It's really quiet, but it really does.... if you listen close you can hear it. Okat this post was fairly dumb but my questions although a bit stupid are valid. Thank you. At the risk of being redundant, I'll post some observations I made a year-and-a-half ago. There was a lot more traffic on the list back then, but it seems like people might tolerate a song interpretation now... The ideas I have about lyrics to The Day I Tried To Live were generated by a paper I wrote for a college literature class, and so are a bit slanted to a thematic interpretation. This is my disclaimer: I'm not asserting that the author intended the interpretation I'm sharing. This is just what I see The lyrics to the song are in the first person. The overall theme of the composition may be seen as an exploration of power, greed, and the effects of power-politics on the protagonist's attitude toward living. +I woke the same as any other day +except a voice was in my head +it said seize the day, pull the trigger, +drop the blade +and watch the rolling heads In the introductory stanza, the protagonist alludes to the desire for action, power, and ultimately distruction. There is a sense that the protagonist has heretofore refrained from participation in the "rat race", and that the theme of the song is to be the effects of his or her attempt to join in the competition for power and resources. This day is different because the protagonist gives in to the cultural pressure to compete, to strive. The phrase "seize the day" is from the latin "carpe diem," which means to take pleasure in the moment without concern for the future. Sieze the Day is also the title of a poplular book by American author Saul Bellow. In Bellow's book, the main character flounders through life without ever acomplishing anything, despite his efforts to "seize the day" or to make something of himself. Thus, the term "seize the day" carries the connotation of both a desire to act and to the futility of such a desire. The phrase "watch the rolling heads" is also interesting because it calls to mind the power of an excutive to "make heads roll" when displeased with subordinates. The passive voice lends a particular sense of detachment and cruelty to the phrase. +The day I tried to live +I stold a thousand beggar's change +and gave it to the rich This is a reversal on the classic Robin Hood legend. The effect of the protagonist's attempts to participate in life lead to injustice rather than justice. +The day I tried to win +I dangled from the power lines +and let the martyrs stretch +singing Here, in the third stanza, the word win has been substituted for the word live. Thus, living is being equated with winning, and the avenues to winning are the trinity of violence, money, and power. In this stanza the protagonist dangles from the lines of power while letting the "martyrs stretch". The deliberate ambiguity of the word "dangle" leaves the question open as to whether the protagonist being controlled by the power lines or is tapping the power lines, or both. Nonetheless, the passive voice once again indicates no concern for the martyrs who are presumably haning from the same power lines. The word stretch, as used in this context, is of particular interest. In the old west, a man who was hanged was said to have had his neck stretched. It also evokes the image of the Christian martyr, Jesus Christ, hanging from the cross. The religous imagery stregnthens the power of the line by emphasizing the protagonist's lack of concern for the other people hanging or dangling from the power lines. +One more time around +might do it +one more time around +might make it +one more time around +might do it +one more time around +the day I tried to live The refrain of "one more time around" emphasizes the futility of trying to compete and to win. One more is never enough. The protagonists seems to realize the futility of resorting to violence, money, and power as an avenue to fulfillment. +Words you say never seem +to live up to the ones +inside your head +the lives we make +never seem to ever get us anywere +but dead The protagonist takes on a new tone in this stanza. The first part seems to speak of an artist's frustration with the act of communication. The futility of reaching out and trying to live is further reinforced by the notion that we all die in the end anyway. +I woke the same as any other day you know +I should have stayed in bed These lines suggest that the protagonist regrets having attempted to compete. They also suggest that the only way to avoid harming others is to "stay in bed," or to refuse to participate in the culture of greed. +The day I tried to live +I wallowed in the blood and mud +with all the other pigs The author plunges both the protagonist and the audience into the dirt with this stanza. Trying to live is equated with wallowing in filth. Pigs can also be seen as a personification of greed. The pigs are characterized as being willing to stand in the blood of others in order to feed at the trough. +And I learned I was a liar +Just like you Perhaps the protagonist has been lieing to him or herself; thinking that he or she was above fighting for power and money. The author throws the internal dialogue back out at the audience by including everyone in the category of liars. The message I glean from this song is that one must take care not to hurt others in our struggle to succeed and to live. Surely it is never worth marching rough-shod over the backs of others just to reach one's goals. The lyrics also remind me to reflect on the ways I delude myself when I start feeling holier-than-thou.
