SOOO i wouldnt mind hearing them on chris's solo album. same thing for whoever threw in the bassplayer from far. far is great. as for my fantasy chris backup band, im not too sure except for one thing: i'd sure like to hear him sing/play w/ ben folds. i'm not too sure how good that would sound, because ben's voice seems really suited to the stuff he plays and his voice differs from chris's quite a bit, but they are two of my favorite musicians and hearing them together would be interesting at least. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 12:09:07 EDT From: Rachel Potter Subject: hater on mtv i was just watching the steven tyler biography thing and they played a hater song. i found myself singing along... then i realized who it was and i had to tell all. that's it! -rachel ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 13:53:08 EDT From: Shawnte Orion Subject: Chris Cornell's talents In talking about fictitious backing bands for Chris' solo project, I was fascinated with the way that some people were fearing any kind of collaboration with musicians who have distinctive talents. That seemed really strange to me. I agree about self-serving attention grabbing musicians, but I wouldnt want to see the gazelle-like singing/songwriting talents of Chris, being crippled by a bunch bland lame-dog musicians. Listening to Soundgarden, I was never distracted because Matt layed down drumbeats that were too complex. Or that Kim's guitar-work was too distinctive. I think that great innovative musicians not only enhance the songs, but provide extra inspiration. Would Chris have been better off in a band like Matchbox 20, where his style would stick out against such bland guitar work, and weak-ass rhythm section? I dont think so. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 15:17:23 EDT From: Nathan Gilmore Subject: Re: Chris Cornell's talents In a message dated 98-07-19 14:21:20 EDT, GarlicSoul@AOL.COM wrote: << In talking about fictitious backing bands for Chris' solo project, I was fascinated with the way that some people were fearing any kind of collaboration with musicians who have distinctive talents. I dont think so. >> Well, the whole idea of this Chris Cornell thing is that it is a SOLO project. Chris would want to get the absolute best musicians available if he were forming a "band." However, since the name of his "band" will be Chris Cornell, then the music basically needs to revolve around Chris Cornell. In solo projects, you do not want to have a drummer who goes wild and draws you away from the solo artist. Take Jerry Cantrell for example. On his solo album, bass and drums are not heavily emphasized while his vocals and guitar playing are. This is why it is "Jerry Cantrell." If it had unbelievable bass and drums then it might as well be "Alice in Chains" and surely not "Jerry Cantrell." I doubt that Eleven's style will affect Chris' music. Chris is probably going to dictate what they are to play anyway. If Chris were to just write down some lyrics and a nice guitar rhythm, and then give it to Eleven and say, "do what you want with it," then Chris would be joining Eleven. Instead, Eleven is going to aid Chris, and use more of his ideas than their own ideas in the songwriting process. Thats just my 2 cents worth. ~Nate "the dirt beneath your feet" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 15:26:18 -0400 From: jenny grover Subject: follow the yellow brick road... Well, I'm off tomorrow to the Emerald City for a week. Try not to start any flame wars in my absence. > Jen Grover on bass(with Candy as back up if she would prove to me she can > play the thing) Jen has every Ben move down there is I bet!! :-))) Unfortunately, I'm not quite that flexible, but if he would consent to be my personal trainer.... Anyway, I must say Toni's line-up is the best I've read yet! I suggest Niki on guitar. Didn't Chris say he wanted an all female back-up band? That would be close.... Jen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 17:24:31 EDT From: Charlie Mccutcheon Subject: Chris Cornell i think it would really be cool if he did everything. maybe on just one song, or maybe on all of them and just have the occasional buddy guest on it. when i do a song, i usually have a general 'vision' of how it's supposed to sound. it's always easier to make things sound how you want when your the one in control. however, soudgarden fit perfectly together. it's hard for me to tell if they all stood out or none of them stood out because they were so well suited for each other. this leads me to believe that, if anything, chris would probably go for the "band" sound instead of the"chris-plus-those-other-guys" sound. this due to his show of respect to 'the song', as opposed to 'the sound'. of course, i could be wrong. charlie ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Jul 1998 18:30:54 EDT From: Kathleen Burrows Subject: sean, pot and chris... heys. okays subpop, i'll IM you next time you pop up on MY buddylist... ive an sg part o my buddy list for while... I wasnt aware that anyone knew the real reasons behind the breakup. I certainly can only speculate (and my speculations wouldnt really contradict the Pres. of the USA joke, btw). Or am I the only person who doesnt know why they decided to disband. I wasnt yet on the internet when the news broke, so I dont know what info/opinions were swirling around on SOMMS.
