I love the Beatles and their music. There is no doubt that almost all rock music today was influenced by that quartet of British magicians. I definitely think that everyone, regardless of age, should know their Beatles. I wouldn't quite say everyone should know "Helter Skelter," even though the song features possibly the first tracable roots to heavy metal. Maybe saying, "What is the White Album?" is like saying "What is Romeo and Juliet?" And just another thing, NEVER COMPARE THE BEATLES TO HANSON AGAIN. Looking forward to reading some SOUNDGARDEN posts, Gallagwar "If I should be short on words and long on things to say. I don't see what was so damn special about them, or their music. I don't really think it's obvious that Soundgarden was influenced by the Beatles. I believe that they were, but I can't hear it as well as some people. I feel I owe it to myself to listen to them just because I enjoy (ok, relish) listening to Soundgarden. Quite frankly, I wouldn't listen to the Beatles by choice if my life depended on it. Some might say I'm closed minded, others might say I'm not a true American, but hey, this is a Soundgarden list, and I REALLY like Soundgarden. What more do you want? Good Morning! Why is it that at 4am I have awakened to hear a rhythm still playing in my head?? Could it be I heard my favorite drummer last night and his magnificent playing still resounds in my head?? I've seem Pearl Jam play before but I have never heard them sound like this!!! Matt is a gift of noise, subtlety, backbone, power and ingenuity!! I never paid any mind to the PJ drummer before. Now my brain and soul can't help but get mesmerized by this talented man. Matt added so much to the PJ show last night here in Chicago. He crashed through the rockers but added a flourish here and a smack there even to the slow songs. Not flashy on the ballads but adding depth and interest to them and of course when he needs to crash and bang the ol boy is right there. GREAT SHOW!!! It sounded really good from where I sat. Eddie in fine voice. Mike, Stone and Jeff played well BUTT My attention was glued to that drummer....damn he is good! I kept wishing I could cut my eyes to the left and see my beloved Kim standing there flaying away on his guitar and hear that magnificent Cornell voice rise to the rafters and see Ben come stalking across the stage. SHIT!!! I miss them so much!!! BUTT it was great to see Matt and it was pretty cool to see PJ too!! toni BTW: Kate is right I saw lots of people standing outside selling tickets 35 min after the opening act went on!!! One guy had a pretty good main floor seat he was selling for 10 bucks! SCALPERS MUST PERISH!!!!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 09:31:10 -0400 From: dec1788 Subject: Musical anthropology Hi guys! This is in regards to the Beatles thread that turned into a discussion of cultural literacy. While I personally think that you get a lot more out of a band's music when you understand their influences, I think that the decision to dig deeper into musical anthropology is ultimately each person's decision. I'm old enough to remember the Beatles when they were together, so I'm familiar with their music without digging too deeply. (I don't love most of it, but I'm glad that I know it because it DOES influence so many types of music.) But there were lots of bands way before my time that I listen to and I like. There are lots of bands that I've listened to and NOT liked, but at least I'm familiar with their material. How do you know if you'll like something unless you give it a try? But back to my point: Someone may want to listen to SG just because they like their music and their lyrics. That's cool. If that's all you're interested in, then more power to you. But I think that you would have a much better understanding and appreciation of the music and the words if you understood the thought processes that went into writing those cool songs. (As someone who loves Pink Floyd, I think it's great when I hear those influences sprinkled throughout SG songs.) Anyway, to each his own. But I do think that it's a good idea to at least give a listen to the bands that SG has cited as influences, if only to understand where they're coming from. On a side note, I appreciated Jenny sharing with us that Ben is, in fact, manic-depressive. I wouldn't bring this up, but I thought Vikki was being unfair in her criticism. I recently lost a good friend who was manic-depressive, and it's not something to joke about. It's a disease. While it may be a little invasive of Ben's privacy, I think it helps us understand some of his actions and put them in their proper context. He's a creative and talented person, no matter what may be going on in his head. You just have to love them through those times of trouble. Life Rules! Donetta (who's also Dagny, but I haven't been feeling much like an Objectivist lately) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 12:38:14 -0400 From: Laura Fletcher Subject: I think I'll turn it back around... Alright, I think each side has made their point about the Beatles issue (sorry if this has been driven into the ground; I'm on digests). I have a song interp on "Like Suicide"... I've thought of this before, but never sent it to the list. Basically, I think the dead bird theory could be right, but that's not ACTUALLY what the lyrics are about. The words, to me, sound like a one-night stand or maybe even a one-sided relationship. Keep reading and see if you can agree with me. Heard it from another room Eyes were waking up just to fall asleep Love's like suicide He (Chris? a character?) hears his lover awake in the next room. Soon she'll realize that this was it...even though she fell in love with him, to him it was just a fling. She could only see the truth after the fact. To equate to the bird story: obviously, he heard the sound of the bird hitting the window. I think he saw this as a symbol of infatuation or lust - the bird's trying to fly into the house but dying as a result. But the bird could only know she would die in the last second of her life (after the fact). Dazed out in a garden bed With a broken neck lays my broken gift Just like suicide Maybe she went back to bed, maybe he's skipping around in time...I think the latter is more likely. He saw her sleeping peacefully. To him, she was a gift, and although he didn't literally break her neck, he did teach her the truths of love, that she can only see a transparent love after she's hit the window full-force. And my last ditch Was my last brick Lent to finish her, finish her His last resort was to tell her the truth. He couldn't allow her to suffer through another minute of thinking he loved her. In essence, like dropping the brick on the bird, he finalized the truth of the death. (I just realized this is one of those annoying interps where I analyze each line. If you've gotten this far, rest assured that I'll have an overall analysis at the end.) Bit down on the bullet now I had a taste so sour I had to think of something sweet Love's like suicide This seems pretty straight-forward. He went ahead with his plan of honesty, but it still made him feel like shit. As with some previous verses (I'll go into this more at the end) he's laying blame or at least trying to rationalize his actions. Therefore, he says love is like suicide anyway, and he's actually helping her. Safe outside my gilded cage With an ounce of pain I wield a ton of rage Just like suicide "Outside my gilded cage" was a tough one for me. I think maybe he referred to leaving his comfort zone by actually telling his lover what he did. There was a little pain involved on his part, but with just that bit he let forth a ton of rage - what he'd been wanting to tell so many women in his past. For this reason, HE'S just like suicide. He killed his emotionless persona. With eyes of blood And bitter blue How I feel for you I feel for you He's angry and he wants to take back what he said because he's brought himself down to what he considers "her level." He is also weak and emotional, but only behind her back. He sees himself in her situation, and he empathizes. She lived like a murder How she'd fly so sweetly She lived like a murder But she died Just like suicide She lived her life on the edge, he believes, by sleeping with this guy she barely knew. She was a wonderful lover and "gift" (see above), but he had to kill her. Again, he leaves the blame by calling it suicide. There are some verses repeated in there, but you can figure it out. They don't need to be torn apart more than once. This song seems an almost chronological song. It goes through an entire morning's grief after sex without love on both sides. He felt guilty, angry, empathetic, and a whole gamut of other emotions before he went back to his original theory: love's like suicide. There's nothing I can really do about it. It's not my fault. We can all guess that Chris is probably not this way, considering his rather depressing angle in lyric writing. So, I add one final twist: he did feel this way (maybe just for a split second) and he felt terrible. It was a sick way of rationalizing behavior. In other words, the whole song is taking a step back from a situation like this one so we can all see the sickness of it. ~~Laura ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| AOL IM: MmMmCelery ICQ UIN: 4394726 (Lumberjill) Homepage: http://surf.to/Lumberjill ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 13:50:36 -0400 From: dec1788 Subject: Review of PJ show in Wisconsin Hi guys! Sorry to post again today, but I thought y'all might like to read what a review of the PJ show on Music News of the World had to say about Matt's contributions: The guitarist led the popular, Seattle-spawned rock band through its set with the help of touring drummer Matt Cameron, formerly of grunge-rockers Soundgarden. Cameron, who took over for Jack Irons after he quit the tour a few months ago, proved to be a powerful addition, pounding the skins with a graceful enthusiasm. Even though this long-awaited tour -- the band's first since 1996 -- just got underway, it's clear that the addition of Cameron and the energetic guitar playing of McCready have revitalized Pearl Jam. Cameron added a hard edge to Pearl Jam's rock songs that has been missing since PJ drummer Irons joined the band in 1995. During "Corduroy," Cameron sampled every inch of his kit as he led the band in an extended jam. They say many more nice things about PJ, but this isn't their mailing list. :) Let's just say that the show was well-received. Life Rules! I was 7 rows away from the stage and really wanted the catch one of the drumsticks he throw into the crowd at the end of the kick ass concert but the drumsticks flew across the entire United Center! I had no chance. All I caught during the concert was a little bit of Vedder spit. On Tue, 30 Jun 1998, tonerkin wrote: > Good Morning!
