And even if SG didn't give a damn, some shithead did, otherwise we woouldn't be talking about the banning of the video. I've got some news, if you care to listen. 'sunshower' has been released as a single here in australia. I got mine on saturday, catalogue number 0-7567840972-1. no other stores had it in stock or really knew anything about it, although I did first hear about it's impending release from an "industry" friend. the front cover is a still from the movie. the tracklisting reads 1. sunshower (edit) and 2. sunshower (lp version). the edited version is a full two minutes shorter than the genuine article. I've listened to it at least four times now, and it is definitely growing on me. the production is *great*. I still get a bit misty when he hits "...recollections of better days gone by...", though. trust me to be a sap about that sort of thing. disappointing that he's dropped you make me sick I make music as his publishing title, however. I also got a copy of the new smashing pumpkins record, _adore_, last week. at first, I couldn't quite remember which song matt played on, but I'm afraid he just couldn't hide from my ears . 'for martha', track number fourteen, opens with a lengthy piano melody. matt is first heard at .56, a nice little cymbal wash (something he didn't dabble in too much with soundgarden). from there he waits, until around 1.14, where the song really begins. sadly, this is not a real rocking number, more of an epic sort of slow-burner. the groove is light and piano-driven, so matt gives a simple, laid back beat - hi-hat, snare and bass, although his right foot refuses to play straight. momentum, at least matt's, is stifled by a bunch of piano deadspots, which are bare of any percussion. for those of you who are pumpkin savvy, the song lies somewhere between the softer sections of 'thru the eyes of ruby' and the louder sections of 'porcelina'. an epic that doesn't quite end up anywhere in particular. it is dissimilar to anything matt recorded with soundgarden, not heavily percussive, the focus on vocal melody, just sort of swaying around without much direction, alternately lilting or fuzzing into the background (whoops, that sounds like a sotw). soundgarden's outro feedback would have, of course, been much more macho . the song runs for eight minutes and seventeen seconds, and I would wager matt only plays for about half of these at best. at 2.37 we have an absolute signature roll, beginning at the high tom, running to the floor and then finishing on the snare. it was this one that clued me in, I've been hearing the damn thing in my head since _badmotorfinger_ came out . matt also gives a short snare fill at 2.54, three precise strokes that harken back to _down on the upside_. better days gone by, indeed. later there is a long build up, 3.55 to 4.27, where matt just bides his time on the snare alone. but then a big, stupid, flash gordon lead melody steps all over the mix, treading over just about all of matt's kit. his cymbals are basically deleted, the ride may as well be a faint click, the crashes more reverb for billy, james and their space suits. the mix just totally kills matt's power from the floor tom and snare to the crash, which is really disappointing, since that would have given the song a needed kick in the ass. thankfully, his toms and snare are still audible. at 4.46 he gives an excellent little shuffle that leads into a more full roll that reminds me strongly of 'tighter and tighter'. then, 5.05 delivers two full rolls, the first slow, the second much quicker. the nasal guitar is worst here, matt is hidden *deep*. there are also a couple of incidental fills here and there, which are great, but by matt's standard pretty rote, I guess, and bear no explanation here. his part finishes around the five and a half mark, which is followed by an outro that would have been okay if the song had some more chilli. well, that's that. 'for martha' is kind of similar to some of the temple of the dog material, in so far as there is a piano, a softer groove and matt on drums. but the comparison ends there. I feel the song could have been so much more, especially with matt on board. I can appreciate that he wasn't the record's shining priority, but they could have benefited much, much more from his involvement. in the end I hope that matt was satisfied with the result, and that future b-sides (and pearl jam) bear more foo fruit. take care, friends. justin ------------- q: is it easy kicking so much ass? a: yes, because there is so much ass to be kicked out there. -matt cameron, 1998. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 16:26:58 PDT From: rachel reisman Subject: from bad to worse Hey SOMMSters... Just when I thought that things with SG/Chris Cornell couldn't get any worse....IT HAS. I was waiting in line today at 7-11 and the line was **DAMN** long so I was forced to listen to their shitty music selection. First they played some horrifying 80's song and then they played SUNSHOWER!! I nearly threw a shit fit right in the middle of the store! I was absolutely disgusted! After they played Sunshower, they went onto play some old crappy Madonna!! It is soooo sad and painful to hear our beautiful and *talented* Chris Cornell in between some 80's crap in a fucking convienence store!!!! *Grrrrrrr* I know this is a pretty dumb post but I just had to let it out!!! RACHEL* ps---If you're thinking of flaming me (although I don't really see any reason why you might ) ,..dont. Trust me. I'm not worth it. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 20:44:47 EDT From: Remy2Rogue Subject: Overfloater Hello everyone. i need a little help.. .i'm stuck on overfloater... i dont have any ideas what the song could about.... does anyone have anyideas they'd like to share? thanks! --grace ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 1998 20:17:25 -0500 From: tonerkin Subject: Memorial Day give away!
