Why wouldn't they be? We can hope that they are, but if you are basing your opinions on what you perceive as Matt's inuendos, then you must have missed the first chat. They are no longer playing in bands together, and Matt made what could have been taken as some snide remarks about Ben in that first chat. He did then say later that they all still love each other. People can love each other and still not want to be around each other. > First, the only thing Matt said about Kim is that he's doing nothing. What else is there to say? The topic was music, not daily routines. I'm a photographer and I'm not doing photography these days, but that doesn't mean I'm sitting around drinking beer all day. I'm sure Kim has other interests too. If he wants or needs a break from music, that's his business, not mine. > Also, he commented that between Pearl Jam and SG, Pearl Jam liked performing All the members of Soundgarden at one point or another throughout the years expressed a dislike of touring. That's not news. They also have all expressed enjoyment of playing live. A love/hate relationship with the business of making and presenting music, is my guess. Kim also said he thought the shows they played in Australia on the last show were some of their best ever. > Kim probably ended Soundgarden by refusing to play live again. I have heard and read nothing that suggests this to me. > I know, I know...that's a fucking shame, but he probably wanted to stop. Perhaps they all wanted to stop. > but how's that gonna happen if Kim is sitting > around..drinking beer and watching Ishtar and Waterworld all day? I think Kim has more taste than that! Anyway, how would you know what Kim does all day? > If anyone can relay a simple message to Kim, tell him to get off his > ass and act like a fucking musician. Maybe Kim wants to do something else with his life right now. That's his right. He gave us wonderful things, but he is not obligated to continue to do so. I know the fun of this list is being able to specualte, but sometimes things really get run into the ground, and this is one. Am I going crazy or was some comment made someplace along the way that the breakup was mutually agreed upon by the gentlemen in question? And was completely amicable? Stop pointing fingers! It's been well documented that Sg didn't like touring...and maybe dealing with fans was one of the reasons they didn't like it!!!! Now we go around blaming various members for various reasons....that's wonderful, considering half this list thinks the band reads the list. Think about it--would you want to read stranger's comments that YOU're to blame for your band's breakup? Until one of them comes out and says "Hey, this is the reason" we just won't know for sure. We all know that Cornell feels sorry about the breakup- just check out the lyrics to Cleaning My Gun- or listen really carefully to Sunshower. Does that leave us with three others to point the finger at? Is it Matt, the "cocky punk drummer"? Ben "Frankenstein" Shephard? Kim and his "don't worship me" attitude? Hiro the "bookworm" back to disassemble the band for good?!!!!! Oh my! I don't buy into any of the shit that I've heard so far. Damn! Even Cornell was wrong when he said at the Grammy Awards that SG would go to work on another record! However, I do have my own speculations reguarding the band's breakup. Don't take them as facts, but at pure, meaningless theory (you may want to grab a pen and paper): 1) SG felt old after the Smashing Pumpkins took their award at the Grammy Awards. Pretty Noose, Again, and Tripping on a Hole in a Paper Heart all lost to some shitty song! It wasn't the first time SG lost an award, but it sure as hell was a blow. Young Corgan (-SP) won over 'dusty' soundgarden. With the music industry beginning to sag and a feeling of obsoleteness, Soundgarden called it quits. 2) Sales of DOTU (highly unlikely because record sales meant nothing to the band before) 3) The band felt that after DOTU, there wasn't anything elso to do- Screaming Life&FOPP (beginning), UMOK (experimentation), LTL (don't get pissed if I say that it was "mainstream"(or at least the most mainstream of the SG albums)), BMF (metal), Superunknown (new style of experimentation), and DOTU (mellow cool music). What next; country music? 4) Retire at pique 5) Desire for new projects (What about Wellwater, and TOTD though?) 6) A band member wanted out to swim in money (we don't like to think about it, but it's possible) 7) NO MORE TOURING! 8) Lack of appreciation and respect from the larger music audiance (MTV sucks cock) 9) "Bands make music"- Cornell. Maybe someone just didn't want to jump right back into the loop. The disagreement split the band. They had 13 years together and thought it perfectly natural to disband. 10) Write your theses here- my hands hurt Whatever the reasons, we'll always love Soundgarden. Why? Because we have to. Spin the black circle again, Nazi Driver. Soundgarden remains in the warm glow of the CD. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 9 May 1998 17:17:30 EDT From: O6z6z6y Subject: Re: The Breakup In a message dated 98-05-09 16:52:30 EDT, you write: << We all know that Cornell feels sorry about the breakup- just check out the lyrics to Cleaning My Gun- >> As far as I can surmise that trak was written around _Superunknown_ time therefore making it irrelevant to the breakup. I just got back from getting tickets in Toronto. Now. Instead of the usual 4 ticket-or-so limit, the limit was 10. Guess how many scalpers showed up? 16. That's 160 tickets gone right there, just at that one outlet. The show is already a total of $42, and now 160 people are gonna get ripped-off BIG-TIME. I hate scalpers with a passion. Making their money ripping off kids who probably don't have much money of their own but who spend it because concerts are their only passion. Fuck. BUT, the show isn't sold out yet, and hopefully it won't be, or Pearl Jam set aside a block of tickets to sell at the doors to screw over the scalpers...does anyone know if this is common practice for Pearl Jam? About the Seattle show...did a second show get added? If so, are there still tickets left? How much do they cost? If they end up being sold out does anybody know if there will be a block of tickets for sale at the door, or at least how much the scalpers might be asking(*grimaces*)? I REALLY REALLY want to go.... Sunshower is on a soundtrack and is QUITE appropriate for the film.. it is only speculation whether or not it's about the break up, but considering the circumstances, i really doubt it.. i think the guys would have been open enough with each other to talk about things like that rather than write whole songs abo ut how miserable they might be... I think Chris was asked to do a song related to Great Expectations.. so he did it.. no mystery there.. When Ben complained about how people interpreted songs, i think he was talking about this: people taking their songs (Sunshower, Ty Cobb) and using them where they want them to fit.. > Does that leave us with three others to point the finger at? Is it Matt, the > "cocky punk drummer"? Ben "Frankenstein" Shephard? Kim and his "don't > worship me" attitude? Hiro the "bookworm" back to disassemble the band for > good?!!!!! Oh my! please be joking..... > I don't buy into any of the shit that I've heard so far. Damn! > Even Cornell was wrong when he said at the Grammy Awards that SG would go to > work on another record! so maybe they hadn't looked into the future that far ahead.. maybe their crystal ball was in the shop.. look at any relationships people have.. you might be thinking "yeah, we'll be together for years" and start planning stuff, and it might just die off.. you can't plan ahead in things like that.. Even if you love someone, you don't know whether or not your feelings (let alone *theirs*) will change down the track.. look at 5 year long marriages that have split up.. you would think it would have happened sooner, but maybe it only gradually died.. I think that kind of thing happened to Soundgarden.. I think it's pretty likely th at they had to give SOMETHING to the media to feed off of.. 'Ooh new album new album'.. you know? > Don't take them as facts, but at pure, meaningless theory that's for sure.. > 1) SG felt old after the Smashing Pumpkins took their award at the > Grammy Awards. Remember Kim made fun of Billy Corgan? i really don't think they're too crushed missing out on that.. i don't know what they think about awards and shit, but i can imagine that they played and created music for more than just a freakin award... As for 'dusty' Soundgarden? Smashing pumkins have been around for years .. not sure how long, but they're not exactly 'young'.. seen those old videos where he and his bandmates still look normal?? Personally, i think Chris and the guys are still pretty damn ripe ;) They could care less what anyone thinks of them, especially the grammy awards people.. i know i totally disagree with their choic es too.. Boyz II Men?! puh-leaaaaaasssssseeeee.. > 3) The band felt that after DOTU, there wasn't anything elso to > do- Screaming Life&FOPP (beginning), UMOK (experimentation), LTL (don't get > pissed if I say that it was "mainstream"(or at least the most mainstream of > the SG albums)), BMF (metal), Superunknown (new style of experimentation), and > DOTU (mellow cool music). What next; country music? There only 'isn't anything left to do' when there's not a whole lot of motivatio n, it's nothing to do with previous works, or there would be no more music created today.. you'll notice that alot of songs are written with some sort of purpose, or like.. just to say *something*.. well what if they have nothing much else to say ? what if they don't feel like saying anything because they think no one gets it? Louder than Love was NOT mainstream (even for Soundgarden)... i didn't hear any of those songs played on the radio and no one else i know, cept big SG fans, have that cd.. it's not mainstream at all..I'm actually having a hard time wondering how you could pigeonhole each SG album.. i know BMF was alot more than just 'metal'.. what about Mind Riot? Certainly there's more to DOTU than mellow cool music... (No Attention, Ty Cobb).. you need to rethink that theory.. i REALLY don't think Country was the only thing left.. and i doubt they were going along with a checklist.. "hmm Metal.. check.. Mellow songs.. check.. Experimental songs.. check.. well boys.. i guess we're done here.." > 8) Lack of appreciation and respect from the larger music > audiance (MTV sucks cock) um.. i really think the guys could care less what MTV (and friends) says about them.. > 9) "Bands make music"- Cornell. Maybe someone just didn't want > to jump right back into the loop. The disagreement split the band. They had > 13 years together and thought it perfectly natural to disband. what loop? Isn't 13 years together too long to have *one* disagreement split the m up? i would think so.. i'm sure there were plenty of disagreements over the year s, they are all fairly aggressive people.. i really do doubt that any personal conflict between them was the reason.. they are still in contact with each other somewhat (as far as i know).. if they didn't want to make music, why are they still doing it? Sure Kim might not be working on anything major that we know of, but i bet he still plays at home.. i don't see him as the kind of guy to jump in to a well-known group and support them.. he is a star in his own right.. it must be pretty hard for him and Ben, i think.. seeing as though they can't go it on thei r own (like Chris), and it's difficult to just join up (like Matt).. > 10) Write your theses here- my hands hurt no thanks.. i prefer to leave it all be how it is.. not insult my favourite band by throwing accusations at them.. i originally wanted to put the blame on *something* just to make sense of it all, but i've realised that sometimes these things just happen.. no sense in looking for a scapegoat.. > Whatever the reasons, we'll always love Soundgarden. Why? > Because we have to. No we don't *have* to always love them.. we love them for our own private reason s and mine don't include dissecting their decision not to play music together anymore.. i am not into them because they have a cool conflict surrounding them or whatever the fuck some people think.. i'm into them because of what music they'v e already created and what kind of a change they've brought to my life with that music.. i'm into them because of their songs and what their songs mean to me.. their personal life does not even come into it.. frankly i wouldn't want to meet them (talk with them on a personal level) because i'm scared that my perception of them would be shattered.. i would rather see them how i imagine them to be, instead of seeing them as just other human beings.. sometimes i don't think of them as like.. 'real people' because their performing and creating of music isn' t THEM.. it isn't their personalities you know? sure, some of the lyrics are personal, but it's music.. and i don't think we're really supposed to know anything more than that.. i don't want to know more than that.. and now that tha t part is over.. (as Soundgarden) i'm not going to be digging for all the dirt i c an find about them.. So they broke up.. i remember how devastated i was that day i found out.. no one else that i knew really understood how i felt that day.. it was so strange to be so upset about a band.. i got "geez, it's just a band.. calm down" more than once.. but look, i'm alive.. i listen to their cds.. i find boots and find new interpretations in old songs.. i have new experiences to associate with old songs.. it's not like i have to find something else in them to 'keep them alive' .. i think these 'Theories' are sad attempts to do so.. They have broken up.. despi te how much evidence you get on a certain 'reason' for the breakup, it won't change anything and it won't matter.. they have broken up.. Lastly... 38 is not old.. at 38 i don't intend to be living my life 'just stayin alive'.. 38 is also not that old to be playing the guitar.. and from what i have heard, Soundgarden aren't a big 'sex, drugs and rock n roll' band.. they play music together, they don't live the Guns n roses lifestyle (uh no offense G'n'R fans).. So quit whining about Kim, trying to find more in the fact that he's having a well-deserved break.. just because he's not in a famous band doesn't me an that he has no life.. so what, he might drink beer.. it doesn't mean he's a fucking alcoholic.. and i thought SOMMSters were above all this.. later.. Matt >> No....some of us couldn't make it to Chicago when that happened....Seattle would be the most approiate place to hold a SOMMSfest dont you think....btw Seattle ticket holders i will start to look into stuff like when we should meet and stuff....we should make a big sign that says SOMMS@mit.edu and get the shirts before then ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 May 1998 18:37:56 -0400 From: "Michelle A. I'd like to get a e-mail list together so we can all just e-mail eachother to make plans instead of bothering everyone else on the SOMMS list. So send me your addys and when I have a *list*, I'll forward it to each of you!
