I was at the lowest point of my life. I went out driving in my car, crying and feeling so depressed. I just wanted to die. I turned on the radio and suddenly this beautiful voice singing the most incredible lyrics came over the airwaves. I had never heard the song before but I recognized that magical voice. I pulled over to the side of the road sobbing but I listened closely to every single word he sang. Chris understood my pain/sorrow. After that I knew that I wasn't alone. I realized that someone else had experienced the same dark depression/sadness and was willing to talk about it openly. No one else wanted to listen to my woes. What help me the most was knowing that I could have black days and that I would survive. Just like Chris had. I always play that song whenever I'm down as a reminder that the gloomy feelings won't linger forever --that the black days are only temporary. Of all the SG songs FOBD will always have a special place in my heart. Michelle, There are no stupid questions... just stupid people ;) (and before anyone jumps all over me, that is not to suggest that Michelle is one of them) Culled from the much-wiser-than-me sources of Chris Mackenzie and Frank Kozik: Mark Dancey used to be the guitarist of Big Chief. They no longer exist. He did all the artwork for Big Chief's stuff as well. Mark Dancey had his own magazine (MOTORBOOTY, now discontinued) full of his artwork. >So I was looking at the SG Discography when I noticed that the BMF notes >said the cover art was done by Big Chief's Mark Dancey. Memphis Minnie) "When The Levee Breaks" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Apr 1998 09:29:30 -0400 From: Elric&Dagny Subject: A different take on Boot Camp Hi guys! Yesterday, Koggle wrote: I'd say a good SG crying song would be "Boot Camp".. listen to the wailing sound of the guitars at the beginning.. it's almost depressing before he even starts to sing.. and once he does, it's such a feeling of inadequacy and despair - for the lack of a better word, that you can't help feel dragged under by it.. I have a completely different opinion of this song. (Yes, I have a dark soul, but humor me. :) At the end, the lines go: There must be something else There must be something good Far away To me, this is such a hopeful song. The first time I heard it, I was reminded of a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke that goes, in part: Sing of the gardens, my heart, that you never saw; as if glass domes had been placed upon them, unreached forever... Show that you always feel them, forever close... Avoid the illusion that there can be any lack for someone who wishes, then fully decides: to be! Silken thread, you were woven into the fabric. Whatever the design with which you are inwardly joined (even for only one moment amid years of grief), feel that the whole, the marvelous carpet is meant. To me this song is saying that no matter how bad things are, there is still good and beauty in the world. Sometimes we are trapped in situations out of our control (are you reading this Niki?) but things will eventually look up. When we are caught in hell, it helps to remember that at least something good is going on somewhere. On my darkest days, I can wish myself away. If my mind is there, then I am too. Somehow you find the strength to get through it. Actually, I think this is one of the more inspirational songs SG released. And I don't think the music is depressing either; I like it. :) Life Rules! Anyway, the song that brings tears to my eyes is Ty Cobb. It's simply beautiful. My second choice would have to be spoonman. I can't help but weep every time I think of that poor guy with only spoons for hands and how he can never cut bread. While recovering he wore one of those lamp shade type retraints to prevent him from further damaging his wounds, I mistook him for a piece of garbage and sent him off to a compressor. We (or at least I) know there's a limit to how far you can go with a song.. when I interpret a song, I use my imagination and see what I can come up with.. I'm not about to write a letter to Chris to stop picking on female politicians, you know.. It's not the be-all and end-all of the song just because that's how i felt about it f or one moment.. It cheapens it when people don't allow room for critiscism of their ide as and when they say "Chris likes birds cos he said this" (Like Suicide) and then hang on to that thought until it goes out of control, like.. 'he must live for the health and sa fety of robins, of course.. since he wrote that and all'.. I don't think you can take a songs interpretation and use it as Soundgarden's meaning of life, you know? IMHO i think the 'cows that don't think' are the ones who sit and headbang witho ut a thought that there could be more than just a heavy beat.. [] Doesn't Boot Camp just make you visualize a guy plowing weeds in a boot camp...talking to himself...and the song itself is what the guy is saying. I think it's short and sweet. This is one of the songs that clearly speaks out for itself. I'm gonna start deleting messages about Boot Cam that say that it is "one of the 90's most tragic songs that clearly reflect on the destruction of our society". My comment to you jerks...FUCK YOU.
