Wellwater Conspiracy is my favourite side project, only it's not really a side project now is it? Anyway, this is one of the best bands i've heard in a very long time. I know this has been said a lot of times but if you don't have Declaration of Conformity go get it. You are really missing on something. And now there's Josh Homme! I can't wait for the new stuff. People from Soundgarden, Monster Magnet and Kyuss, can you ask more? Can anyone, having been a member of any of these 3 great bands, start up a new one and still sound original and make new fresh music? These guys are geniuses. enrique ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 11:26:53 -0400 From: Jamesetta Simpson Subject: Re: survey surprise >Toni Wrote: > If Ben made remakes of The Rev Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and > Otis Redding songs. But Toni you have forgotten the best rocker to sing the blues "Rory Gallaher". Now what would you do if you heard Kim and Ben get together to do "Calling Card' or "As the Crow Flies" :-) Would make you, Gonzo, and I really happy!!! > I like TOTD also. I liked Hunger Strike way back when before I even knew > who Andy Wood was. Same here for me I didn't know Andy before TOTD. I most certainly do now. I would be hard press to say between TOTD and Hater which I liked best. TOTD because it is the best writing Chris has ever done and Hater because it's Rock 'N' Roll as it should be played. As for Truly I have two CD's but just can't get into them, they are a good band but just not me.. WWC I don't have any of their work but I have heard clips and did like what I heard. Hopefully in the future I will pick up one of their CD's.. > BUTT I am still waiting for my favorite side > project...or I guess it will be the main project! KIM playing the guitar > somewhere....ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!! toni I just can't see Kim replacing another guitarist in any old band. For example could you see Kim playing for the Chile Peppers or Guns 'N' Roses!!!! Kim has a style that is going to be hard to just fit into an established band and I for one wouldn't want him to... I guess he'll just have go to Chicago and play for his biggest fan at the "Loud Love Hotel".... :-P Jamie (SOMMs Mom) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 12:30:24 -0400 From: jenny grover Subject: Re: survey surprise Michele wrote (and I thank her for an intelligent and flameless reply): > I didn't listen to any Andy Wood music until after I heard and loved TOTD. > So the fact that it is also my favorite side project has nothing to do with > that. I guess I should clarify this as several people read me wrong. I didn't mean to say that people were attracted because they were already Andy Wood fans. I think at that point many of us in the world at large knew little if anything about him. What I meant to say was that some people are attracted to or become more deeply involved with a project when they learn it has some sort of emotional and tragic store related to it. > This is why I really like it. I've been indie/underground for so many years that I'm used to having to dig harder and deeper than most people for what I want, and taking quite a few gambles along the way to find what it is I do want. And I (shamefully) didn't get fully on board the SG train till later either. I want to urge any of you who haven't partaken of the other side projects do so. All are worthwhile and all are available in some form and place if you look hard enough. Hey everyone, I was screwing around the other day and wrote a riff that goes with the lyrics to "Rusty Cage". i recorded it on a 4 track and made it mp3 on my computer. I brought this idea up with Seth a long time ago: A page where people could upload wavs or mp3s of themselves doing Soundgarden covers. Seth said he would host it. I don't know what he thins now. What do you people think? Good idea? I think it would be cool. Is >there anyone else out there for whom TOTD is not your favorite side >project, or am I all alone on this one? Personally, I didn't even know who Andy Wood was when I bought the album, I just liked it's sound. However, like Jen this isn't the kind of music I listen to a lot. And I think you're right regarding the production being a bit too slick, the sound isn't raw enough, it's too sterile. As for the 'ranking' of side-projects, well... Truly anyone? I don't know if this should be considered as a side-project, but I would rank those boys over TOTD any day. How come no-one (well, almost no-one 'cept Jen and me) mentions them on the list? (note: I don't want any of you ignorant m.f.'s mailing me telling me: 'cause it's a Soundgarden mailinglist.) Haven't people heard of them yet? Maybe they've bought Hater and just didn't like it. I must admit, it has a totally un-SG sound, and takes some getting used to. Thus perhaps people think all the side-projects sound somewhat the same. It's a shame, if you haven't listened to Truly you don't have the slightest clue on what you're missing out on. -Andy ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 13:37:02 PDT From: rachel reisman Subject: BOOM THEORY II hey guys..i've got good news...Matt Cameron is going to be chatting at Boom Theory on May 6!!...If you people already knew this....sorry for wasting your time.... It has a very pop/soul/R&B feel to it with even some > gospel overtones It is true that the album is a bit "soft" considering the music SG fans typically would find themselves listening to, but you also have to remember Reach Down's moody-"grungy"-hard-rock-meets-blues feel, the guitars and overall effect of Say Hello 2 Heaven, Hunger Strike. The reason I like it, although being a non-religious person (Atheist to my friends), is the irony of the song Wooden Jesus. Basically, the way I interpret it was that here's a "guy" buying himself a -- can you imagine this, seeing a tourist or something? -- wooden Jesus -- like a cheap, imported "Made In Taiwan" stick of wood -- and thinking its something bordering holy. "I didn't know it was the holy land; but I believed for a minute the check left my hand" (lines 3-4 in booklet) basically say that this guy is extremely gullible as to the ways of the "religion." "Coat hanger halos don't come cheap; from television shepherds and living room sheep" is just a social comment by Chris as to the state of his faith. I think. :) > I wonder how many > people would be as enamored of it if it wasn't an Andy Wood tribute. I have never heard a single Andy Wood single. :) So, your statement is incorrect, at least as far as I am concerned. (And, as I look, Michelle A. Leco is in the same boat as I.) Michelle A. Yeah, exactly; I am only familiar with TOTD, yet I think I still would consider it my favorite mainly because the album, in my opinion, would be able to stand on its own without Cornell/Vedder's name endorsement. And, probably without the Andy Wood endorsement. The songs speak for themselves; these guys know music, these guys know themselves. And isn't that the whole spirit of things? And, I would consider myself one of those guys who didn't get on the "bandwagon" until Superunknown. I'm worse, tho', because my first album was DOTU. (Which, btw, is still my favorite.) I had heard BHS, Spoonman, and My Wave on the radio, but when I heard Pretty Noose... and when I heard Burden In My Hand, I was done for; I was a fan. Forever!
