I think it was before Lollapoolza last summer when she was live on the radio. She is from the Chicago area and plays at Orchestra Hall (with the Chicago Symphony) sometimes so she is quite an accomplished violinist. But she is in her early 20's and loves rock. I admire her as a person also because she endured a tragic personal situation and has come back from it and gone on with her life in a big way. I might have to pick up that CD since I liked the Metallica songs and I think she would do a good job with SG. Thanks for mentioning it, Kevin. toni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 10:12:01 -0400 From: Ben Clark Subject: Re: remarks about opinions concerning a survey :) > Unnecessary? Those who say Applebite is unnecessary > are of the same breed I guess... (I would go as far as saying that it > is necessary! totally!) Yeah, exactly... when I said unecessary, I was referring to those who hold that opinion, like reviewers of the album back oh' so many months ago... Although Applebite really doesn't shout out "Soundgarden" (except for the lyrics, which are easily ID'ed as SG, and Cornell), I personally believe it is well worth our time to go back and listen to it again. Perhaps sitting really close to your speakers when they are turned *way up*. :) > (The only thing I really don't like on BMF is the "terry date" > uniform sound, pretty much like the "And justice for all" absence > of diversity in the prod). Oh, yeah, I'm with you on that note. Nice comparison... I have both Justice and BMF and I can almost see the similiarities. I think, however, that right after BMF, Soundgarden either a) found out that so-called "butt-rock" doesn't *do* anything for them, or b) they just wanted to try something deeper, perhaps to them more meaningful. I'm not saying that BMF/LTL/UMOK/etc. were butt-rock albums (although LTL...), but if you look for the deep, lyrically-advanced, musically-entrancing sound that became familiar to millions of radio listeners (and initiated fans into their world), you have to listen to the "B" sides of Superunknown, or the entire DOTU album. > Well maybe there are less catchy tunes, but The boys have always > known how to make corherent statements and albums, even if not > "concept albums" if that's supposed to mean something anyway. Oh, that brings up an interesting point: has anyone ever tried to see if DOTU was a concept album... you know, a themed album, something along the lines of Radiohead's OK Computer, or the more obvious Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness? Or, maybe some of you could think of it as The Wall minus one CD. :) But seriously, has *any* SG album been even remotely themed? I mean, besides the depression, sadness, lonliness, etc. that everyone wrote about in the "Seattle grunge" years (No offense intended). Perhaps a relationship of Cornell's? > I don't agree because Cornell is a hell of a guitar player when it > comes to efficiency and diversity... Oh sure... but compared to Kim, I think he doesn't shine as much. :) For example, Cornell didn't start even playing (for the most part, on a regular basis) until Superunknown, so everything before that was just Kim and the *occasional* Cornell at rhythm. So, basically we can deduce that all the great riffs of the UMOK, LTL, BMF years were Kim's, and the solos too. Therefore, I think I can safely say that Cornell is not as good as Kim, even with his diversity and efficiency. But we already knew that. > Is fighting the system fighting the people who had the power by turning > oppression?? The "system" is a scheme, a tool that uses you. Not that people > are not responsible and should blame the so handy System for everything, > but the revolutions often (if not always, especially in the short term) > just turn the tide but the flood still comes. Victims and benefactors are > not the same but the "system" is globally unchanged, or worse. Okay, this is what I mean. "Fighting the system," in my mind says that we are going to stop being those that sit back and watch those in power or those in reasonable positions to reign down on us with their "whips" and "chains." So, therefore, the idea of "slaves" hanging "owners" tells us to be those that stand up and say "Hey, guys, this is wrong!" and, then, while they are confused, we take their whips & chains and find a noose... If you loved/love Soundgarden's music, thats great, go with that. YOU'RE the one who chooses what you like, and dislike. I mean, do you really care what they think about the music/bands you like? Don't let some ignorant person talk shit, just tell them to take their worthless opinions to someone who may care, or just ignore it. Hopefully one day, stupid people will stop breeding...so until then, don't let their rambling get to you. To be honest, I didn't even really think of it when I filled out mine. I rarely even listen to it. Now, before you get on your high horses and start gassing up your flame throwers, I am not saying that I don't think it's a wonderful and very meaningful album. It is. It's just not a style of music that I would expect to be so favored by lovers of SG style music. It has a very pop/soul/R&B feel to it with even some gospel overtones. I do think it is very well done and that Chris's voice is well suited to that style, but it's not a style I listen to much. I guess the production is a bit slick for my taste too. And at the risk of offending some overly sensitive people, I wonder how many people would be as enamored of it if it wasn't an Andy Wood tribute. Is there anyone else out there for whom TOTD is not your favorite side project, or am I all alone on this one? Jen ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Apr 1998 00:25:17 -0400 From: "Michelle A. Leco" Subject: Re: survey surprise This is not a flame! "I wonder how many people would be as enamored of it if it wasn't an Andy Wood tribute" I didn't listen to any Andy Wood music until after I heard and loved TOTD. So the fact that it is also my favorite side project has nothing to do with that. "It's just not a style of music that I would expect to be so favored by lovers of SG style music. It has a very pop/soul/R&B feel to it with even some gospel overtones." This is why I really like it. I like the soul and bluesy feel of the music. And I like the fact that all of the members of TOTD were able to create such a great album that is so diverse from their main projects. It just re-affirms my opinion of their amazing talents! I think that maybe the reason the TOTD is such a favorite is because it is better known. I've noticed from Koggle's SOMMS list and from many posts to the list that many SOMMSters didn't get on the SG bandwagon until their later albums, which were more mainstream. (Nothing wrong with that.) But if this is true, wouldn't it also be true that people are not as aware of WWC, Hater, Truly, etc.? I had to mail order all of these other albums. Just goes to show you that it's even harder to find for people who are looking for em! ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 25 Apr 1998 to 26 Apr 1998 ************************************************
