Imagine my surprise when I was phoned while houseminding to be told that Matt was on telly? -'Hey Hey It's Saturday' (to those not lucky enough to have 'Hey Hey', - it is a product of the 70's that still hasn't been axed) of all things! I kept trying to convince myself that this the solution is to play the B power chord at the 7th fret of the low E string (conveniently just below the E you start the riff on). Then form the C using this shape: e B (0) G (0) D (x) A 7 E 8 I seem to remember this being how Chris plays it in the video as well. Perhaps lazier, but I think you'll find it easier to bend the necessary parts of the B (and i personally think it all sounds better using the lower, fatter strings). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Mar 1998 10:36:47 -0500 From: Gabrielle Gerbino Subject: Re: No subject given Kim doesn't play the intro to FOBD, Chris does. ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: No subject given Author: Andy at aot-gateway Date: 3/15/98 10:48 AM Hey SOMMies For all guitarists out there, could someone explain to me how Thayil manages to play the intro to Fell on Black Days. I didn't bet anything after all :) BUT, laziness is an underestimated quality. The B chord I pay has its root on the A string. I find the E string too "fat" to play this on it, and the C chord played with the Con A string, 3rd fret; E D string 2nd fret and G and B open sounds and "plays" far more natural for me... I mean I have nothing against gigantic leaps on the fretboard, but it's totally unnecessary and does'nt add to the sound or feel of the song... I had kind of an unnerving experience last night. I hadn't watched Motorvision for a long time, so I stuck it in the VCR to watch before I went to bed. Well, I was fine through all the beginning stuff, but shortly after Soundgarden took the stage I started sobbing! This surprised me, because I thought I had pretty much come to terms with the breakup, but there are several things at work here. First, its a show on the Badmotorfinger tour, of course. During that tour I saw them 4 times, so the whole stage set up was very familiar, as was the way the band performed. During that phase of their career Soundgarden were in Chicago all the time it seemed, since they'd headline, then they'd open, then they'd be back headlining, then they did Lolla, so I saw them 4 times between late 1991 and late 1992. I consider this time to be when they were happiest, and most free during their performances (of the years that I've been a fan, at least) and you can see it in the film. Chris looks *into* it, interacting both physically and verbally with the audience. People are on and off the stage through every number - and the band seems unphased by it - most of you have the tape, so you know what I'm talking about. It made me sad to know how that changed. Now I don't want to get into "why the band broke up" speculation (the anniversary of which is rapidly approaching: another factor in my sadness), but the more I learn about Chris Cornell as a person, and the more closely I watch tapes of him performing at various times throughout the life of SG, I can see how cold and distant the whole experience must have been starting to feel for him. He has said "So I learned early on that I wasn't going to allow music to be this thing I used to pay the rent. It was mine, and more sacred than that." Just reading that brings tears to my eyes. As they got more and more popular he was no longer sharing these "sacred" things with a special group of people, who knew and loved them. Instead he was just going through the motions for a sea of nameless faces (Face Pollution). People still describe being a SG fan as being a lonely experience, but its nothing compared to how it was before Bandmotorfinger. When I saw them when they were touring with Danzig I swear we were the only ones in that theatre who even knew who they were! And when we got up to leave after Soundgarden performed people around us were shocked - "you aren't going to wait and see Danzig?!" We made a point of saying "no, we saw who we came to see". I know alot of people disagree with me on this idea, but I think from the beginning Soundgarden shyed away from fame, maybe not consciously, but certainly deliberatly - for purposes of self-preservation I would guess. It always seemed like they'd be on the brink, poised for that big leap, when all of a sudden they would literally disappear, and you wouldn't hear anything about them until the next album. It was like they would get so far into it and then, like being burned by a flame, they would retreat. And I think it was them that retreated, not the media or the fans. And I also think it was a function of their integrity and the way they felt about their music, especially Chris, that prompted it. When Badmotorfinger was released I started feeling very possessive of the band, worried that they would be eaten alive by hordes of people (become "trendy"), people who just didn't *get it*. And eventually, the way I see it, that's exactly what happened. You can see it by some of the shit I've been seeing here on the list. I haven't complained much, but it pisses me off no end to see the list devoted to this group that I still cherish reduced to some of the stupid exchanges we've had lately. If the "Can someone tell me what's on the first SOMMS disc" was for real...I know we try to be patient with newbies but come on. I laughed out loud when whoever it was (sorry, I've been so disgusted I don't save posts anymore) curtly answered "Badmotorfinger". You can flame me all you want (God knows I became hardened to that when this list had some bite), but this is crap! And I don't want to hear "Well they haven't done anything lately" because it doesn't matter. There ARE other things to talk about. I've seen people try - I've tried. A thoughtful thread will go on for a few posts and then die. Most people probably haven't even read this far, since it seems we've become like some kind of slow IRC, with lots of quick one liners. That's not to say there hasn't been anything of value, but... Anyway.... I miss Soundgarden. And I didn't think the approaching breakup anniversary would bother me, but I guess it does. And those of you who think listening to the music can suffice, which unfortunately it must, obviously have never seen them in concert. The "sacredness" Chris found in his music was so evident when they performed - it was transcendent, "Total Fucking Godhead". And I miss it terribly. Well, I had more to say, but I feel drained. How can these virtual strangers have such a hold on me? Excuse my tirade - I guess my heart still aches. Just barre the 5th and 6th strings at the 7th fret to get that B in there. and, When you bend the B power chord, bend only the 4th and 5th strings at the 9th fret and not the root on the 6th string 7th fret.
