V-I-N-Y-L Anyway, of course virgin VINYL would be relatively free of defects and desirable for that reason, but I think the criticism was directed to those people who purchase sealed items and leave them sealed on the basis of some perceived future re-sale value. I was lucky enough to find several sealed SG items. They remained sealed for a whole maybe 10 seconds after I got them home (some met their fate while still in the car). Open it! Enjoy it! That's what it's for! Look at it, play it, touch it, smell it, whatever you like... And as for people asking what it's worth, that doesn't necessarily mean they are looking to sell it. Mostly I think, like me, they are looking to buy it but don't want to get taken to the cleaners in the process. I like to know what a reasonable price is before I shell out too much. Sometimes I shell out a little too much anyway, for fear it won't turn up again anytime soon, but I would hate to pay $60 for something and have it turn up next month in 3 different places for $30. And the entire Pretty Noose bass tab is available in the Cherry Lane DOTU bass edition. I have it and you would play hell figuring it all out yourself. I can't even play it WITH tab. It's a nightmare (unless you're as good as Ben, I guess). I'm currently in the process of selling off everything i own in attempts to give me enough cash to go overseas.. but NOTHING, not even if i was on the streets living in poverty, NOTHING could make me sell one of my Soundgarden items.. *cough* but let's not get into that 'real fan' business again, eh? heheh Koggle http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/6953/register.html http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Alley/6953/SOMMS.html ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 13:21:43 +0100 From: Anders B-N Nergaard Subject: Vinyl-matters People have been raising the matter that in some perverted way, people wh= o ask how much certain releases are worth, especially on vinyl, automatical= ly are some sort of bastards trying to make money on die-hard fans; that the= y only want to know how much the items they bought are worth, so they can profit on selling it. Since I was the last person asking how much some items were worth before this all came on the agenda, I feel I=92ve been wrongly judged. The reason I asked for the values, is that I wanted to kn= ow if I had been ripped off. Many on this list can confirm that I personally am not out after money. I have yet to actually sell an item. If I ever did, I would do it because a fan wanted it, and couldn't find anything to trade. AND I would NEVER tak= e more for it than I paid for it myself. Whenever if find an interesting item, I buy it regardless if I already ha= ve it. Why? Because I want to trade. Believe it or not, there is a limit to which releases you can get your hands on in Norway. That's why I trade, t= o get other releases with b-sides I don't already have in possession. I lov= e the music, that's why I want to own it all. Now, I've almost got every official Soundgarden-releases there is, but some of those are on tape, an= d I personally prefer to have the real thing, on cd or vinyl. So I continue trading. As for that type that really wants to make money by selling Soundgarden-items, I pity them. I know some sell because they have to, no= w that's different. But those who sell items for more than they bought them for, thus making money on fans, they are really pathetic. When that's sai= d, I think I only once met someone on this list who actually wanted to make money (he said he didn't, but the prices he was asking for were outrageous). So generally there aren't that many on the list who want to make money on other fans. Thus this matter really never should have arise= n on SOMMS. It's one thing to have a disagreement with someone, it's another to attack them personally. There have always been problems amongst people on this list, so I'm not coming out here to say that "aw, why don't we all be nice to each other!!" and hand some daises around. What I am going to say is knock this kind of shit the fuck off. I don't want to read it, and I don't want to have to delete it from my box. First of all, what in hell is this VINAL stuff? You used this spelling so consistently that I wondered if maybe my aging brain had forgotten how to spell. But I could not find this spelling anywhere, so I can only assume that my fears about an elitist money making plot are unfounded. Having gotten that off my chest, the way I understand vinyl vending, most places grade the condition of their records. If you deal with reputable people you should be able to trust that (same with bootleg video and audio). Just recently I've bought three used SG vinyl records from two different sources, sight unseen, and they all look brand new. And it really doesn't take that much talent to be able to tell whether a record is scratched or warped - you just have to hold it up and look at it. > ive been to record shows whare dealers are selling an obviously > damaged piece of vinal for like 10 bucks lets say, then on the other > hand ive found the same piece of vinal for like 15 bucks > unopened.......isnt the 5 extra bucks worth it?? No doubt. I would never buy anything that was obviously damaged, but I have no problem buying things used if that's the only way I can find them at a price I can afford. Alot of what I've been looking for is pretty rare, so its unlikely I'd get any of it for $15. In fact its all so old I don't even know if unopened copies exist. So....when I get sick of searching, or if I see an unbelievable bargain, used is fine with me. > just to know that you are the first on to open it. For some reason I like the used vinyl because I know someone else, hopefully someone who loves SG, owned it and listened to it before me. Kind of a communal thing I guess. And with trading its even better, because that is a labor of love. > i seriously doubt there are any people onTHIS list that collect sg items for > turnaround value alone. You're probably right, but sometimes I see posts from people wanting something, or trying to sell something and I don't recognize them from the list. So...they either lurk alot, or they joined up just to make a buck. Its just my feelings, as somewhat of a SG purist I guess. And I'm not even sure why it bothers me - maybe because I watched Soundgarden go from practically unknown (when being a fan was a pretty lonely experience, but one that felt truly special) to them being considered decidely "cool" (or should I say "kewl"). I've always felt very protective of them. Kathie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Mar 1998 15:43:19 -0600 From: Bill Flanders Subject: Re: And the Vinal Jeopardy answer is???
