My plan for world domination has not solidified to the point where I can monitor all of your email accounts simultaneously. Some of you will remember that there were actually two messages from Matt to the list - the first on June 21, 1996 and the second on April 19, 1997. The second one is the post-breakup message that I've been guarding so tightly. The reason is that at the time, nobody from the band had breathed a word to anyone about the breakup and I was intent on keeping the message out of the media. Matt asked that I keep his mail confidential, and I will continue to respect that wish and not forward either of his messages. People collect for a variety of reasons. I have some vinyl that I have never played. It is in a frame because I love picture disk and want to display them in my SG shrine. I bought DOTU on vinyl because I wanted to hear it the day it was released not when the CD came out. I like the packaging on much of the vinyl more than I do the physical plastic inside. Some people would think I am silly for collecting for the "wrong reasons" I guess. But the way I see it is I love Soundgarden and I love to hunt for their things. I don't plan on selling it(hell I have 100's of albums in my garage now I can't bring myself to sell or throw away) Some one could offer me a $100 for the etched picture disk of Loudest Love(with my everloving Kim) and I wouldn't take it. One of the reasons I collect vinyl is that it is more challenging than CDs to collect and find. I also derive a tremendous amount of pleasure from spending a day going to every music store in my area and looking thru their selection of vinyl. I almost always come away with something cool. I do not limit myself to just SG stuff however, so my collection is still small, but growing. Another thing is that some bands only release certain songs on vinyl, or certain releases, for example, Hovercraft's first two releases are only available on vinyl, PJ's xmas single is vinyl, etc... I prefer "virgin vinyl" because people tend not to take good care of vinyl and it gets scratched and warped, however, I almost always will open it and listen to it anyway. Vinyl has a much different sound than CDs and I really like that, it is raw, the way music was meant to be heard. In regards to how much a vinyl is worth, I just ask myself, can I afford this price? Sometimes I pay way too much for stuff, sometimes I get a steal. I never buy anything with the stipulation that this might be worth something to someone else someday. I'll never sell my collection, how do you put a value on something that brings you pleasure? "The way music was meant to be heard" is always up for debate. Now I'm not advocating that vinyl is better than CD or vice versa, but I have yet to find a guitar, drum, vocal, any instrument that contains pops and hisses (in the vinyl sense of the words) in its original sound. Just some food for though... And I'm sure you guys don't want me bringing in the cognitive science analysis now, do you? Let me put it this way.. I'm going to be working in a lab with monkeys and studying effects of auditory stimuli on their brain. I will be playing my monkeys Soundgarden stuff (among other things) and analizing their responses. One of the monkies' names is Geoff. The other's name is Seth. Whenever I hear that part in I Don't Know Anything, I feel like yelling out "FOPP"...."FOPP"....."FOPP"! Observation #2: I noticed that low depressed, distorted background voice in songs and we may see more of this on his solo album. The voice that I am referring to is the voice in the Spoonman Demo on Stolen Prayers which says "Spppooman" and "Save Me". This is the same sounding background voice in Bleed Together that say "We can bleed" and the whole sequence with "come with me.......the head of us all.." at the end of the song. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 17:39:24 -0500 From: Brian Kirkner Subject: Re: PN tabs PN was in Guitar World a year or two ago. It was in Guitar (for the practicing musician), also. I wish I could be more help on this, but it was real complete--bass tabs, guitar solo, and everything else. I remember playing it along with the CD, and it was perfectly accurate (to my knowlege, anyway). Also, if memory serves me, the bass is in the same tuning as the guitar, (low to high) CGCG. So if you can get your hands on a GW from around the time that PN was released (spring of '96), it's in there. -Brian P.S. - It sounds real great even for bass to use a Crybaby wah. Hey dudes. I haven't posted for ages, so I've got a few things to say. There's a bit about SG vinyl at the bottom so if you're not interested in Skin Yard then skip over all this first stuff ok!?! Firstly, Skin Yard. How cool are they? And yes this is Soundgarden related, because Matt Cameron used to be their drummer. Skin Yard definitely were an unreal band. Here's a few facts in case you didn't all know: Matt came up with the name 'Skin Yard'. He played on their first full length self titled album, then left the band. The album he played on is fucking ace, but hard as hell to find. (1986 C/Z release) If you can get a hold of it then do, I guarantee you won't regret. Especially those Matt fans out there, and I know there are a lot of you! Matt wrote some of the music on it, so there's another reason to go hunt for it. The vinyl release is this cool skin-pink color. If anyone wants more Skin Yard info mail me and I'll tell you (if I know). Jack Endino was the guitarist in Skin Yard, and you will all notice his name in most of the SG releases liner notes and he even produced a couple of their albums (NB screaming life/fopp). I received an e-mail from Jack the other night, let me tell you I was stoked! He seems like a really cool bloke. He has a proper web page and everything, by the way, which is really cool. Now he is working on some new stuff, but I won't go into that... back to SG... Oh yeah, about SG vinyl. Here in Australia, vinyl is very uncommon so I usually pay whatever I have to pay for it just to get it. Check out my list of stuff (very un-updated) http://www.ecr.mu.oz.au/~scronk/sound.html Vinyl is definitely the coolest medium and I don't care if it is expensive, because it is really the only thing I 'collect' so I don't mind paying a bit for it, especially the colored ones. And all that stuff about virgin vinyl - well I don't care what condition my records are in as long as I can play them and they sound right. And they look really cool stuck on my wall with all the other posters etc. etc. just like all our rooms I'm sure. By the way I have a SG record for sale because I've got a spare. It is the Hands All Over 10" fold out one with really cool pictures. E-mail me if you're interested (with an offer). Also I can get my hands a copy of UltraMegaOK on vinyl if anyone's looking. Yeah... it's the music, more than it is the money, and more it is the physical material that has been mass produced by corporate executives. If I have Ultramega OK on CD and vinyl and it's worth $100 on vinyl, I'm selling mine for sure. People, if you're in the same situation. Sell the unneeded items, or wait for them to appreciate (which isn't likely to happen once Soundgarden totally fades out of the musical vocabulary).
