Unfortunately, I was very late in "meeting" so to speak, Soundgarden. When I was younger and MTV was cool I saw the sparse SG videos they played and liked them but somehow it didn't affect me at the time. Many years later, say 1996...at the age of 21 (pitiful I know) a friend of mine buys DOTU and really gets into Blow Up the Outside World and played it a lot. I started getting into it, and listened to a few tapes one of my friends had of SG. I started getting into it more, but not a lot. Then, last year, January 27th, in Sydney, Australia, (I took a vacation from being stationed in Japan, in the Navy) at a concert festival called the Big Day Out, I saw Soundgarden for the first time live and completely became addicted to their sound. So addicted, that when I found out that a couple of days later they would be playing a full concert, I spent about $90 just to get a ticket. The show was in a place called the Hordern Pavilion and it was absolutely fabulous. Anyway, I'm glad I managed to see them in Concert before they broke up, but I only wish I had been exposed to them sooner. Now, I have a huge SG collection...but I'm still trying to expand to rare and old stuff, you know, the kind that is really hard to find. OK, I know I've bored you enough, so I'll let your tired eyes wander elsewhere, if they haven't already! Jon (why aren't there any other bands as good as SG was?????? WHY?!?!?!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 19:15:39 +1100 From: "Boot Camp...nice place." Subject: KT if you ever..... Jimmy Page and Robert Plant decided to tour again. There was no John Paul Jones and of course no Bonzo.. Jimmy and Robert stated at the beginning of the tour that this was not a Led Zep reunion, that they were not trying to be Led Zep. If Soundgarden could or would reunite it would be the same 4 members combining 4 great talents to create new sounds. As much as most bands keep a measure of the sameness to all their music - I do think Soundgarden has tried to change and improve their music (some times succeeding other times not). The point I was trying to make in my original note was even with the countless numbers of good bands out right now - NONE hold my attention as did Soundgarden. In life we have many loves they come and go - but there are people, items, places, and times that we hold as that one time love. The band that holds that place for me is Soundgarden. I feel if they were to reunite as long as they were completely honest about their reasons for doing so then it should not be looked upon as a weakness. Being honest to themselves as well as us (to a certain extent) is the most important thing. If, by some strange chance, they decide their solo endevors aren't as fulfilling as they had hoped and they find their way back to each other then that would be groovy as all shit man, but if they don't that's kewl too...as long as they stay true to their music and not the almighty dollar. They disbanded with the greatest dignity, grace, and sense of right. They had a long, prosperous career that brought pleasure... So many times you hear about bands who have broken up or who have fired members and what you hear are hateful, bitter, and childish remarks thrown back and forth. The ex-members of SG kept and maintained an unmatched level of decency... >> I do agree with those of you that side with the band not regrouping because they went out with a bang (and pretty much started out with one) or with enough for them to be satisfied. Soundgarden was like this amazing ride that was created by these 4 guys that started in one amusement park location. It then grew to the likings of the other amusement parks and got real popular because of its physical appearances and because of the actual thrill people got from the ride. Then after a very long time from being successful, the owners/creators of the ride decided that it had done real well and if they could make this one great ride then they could make more great rides. So they decide that the ride was over and that it was time for them to create new rides or maybe do a whole nother field in the world. That's how I could put it from that perspective. Of course, while listening to the tape, cd's, and vinyl, you sometimes just image that you could call up Ticketmaster or listen to your favorite radio station and get tickets to see the band play live. And of course we sometimes image or wish that they were together, but I'm pretty sure for the most part that that's because of the fact that they were/are the best thing that ever happened to the music industry. The lyricists are excellent and the musicians are even more creative to provide for the wonderful lyrics. So if these four guys, or shall I say 5 guys, can go out there and just pick up instruments, some paper and a pen and create this amazing piece of creativity and do it all just for the hell of it then they can do it again and again. Just look at it this way. Soundgarden was just one of the many (maybe..) possible creations started by these guys. With the break up of that band comes a lot of influences. So maybe in the future one or two of them would work together on something, but not in the same perspective as the mutation of STP into Talk Show (not to dis them or whatever..just to give an example.. there are other bands..) So, again, just thought I'd make some convo with you guys. I think, that with most bands that get back together, they are usually still in the news and maintain the lifestyle that gets them attention. With all this attention, they might have the urge to get more attention, therefore a reunion. Why this will never happen to our beloved Soundgarden, well, none of the band goes out looking for attention. I mean, all have laid pretty low and probably will enjoy life in a small desolate island off Seattle. That's fine, and I hope most of you can swallow this, but I think what get's ALL of us irritated, is that the whole band, except Matt, hasn't reached out to the fans, saying, "I'm sorry, but we're still friends, we love each other, and hey, we still might get back together, but now, we're taking a long break.". Even Matt, in his famous e-mail to SOMMS, didn't really clarify that. (damn) jpa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 Mar 1998 23:18:19 -0600 From: Kathie and David Subject: Virgin Vinyl I have hesitated writing to the list for some time now because I couldn't put my finger on why I kept getting this sick feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I'd see a post from a "collector" looking for some obscure SG item, insisting that it must be "virgin" and "unopened". Then I watched Hype! again, and finally figured it out. In the movie there's a graphic artist who is interviewed who throughout the movie cuts up several posters while telling what they are worth, obviously not giving a damn. And the artists involved all talked about how everyone around them was so materialistic and greedy, while they just wanted to play music. The sick feeling was coming from hearing people "collecting" SG who obviously don't have a clue what SG was about. There seems to be two different classes of collectors on the list. Those of us, like myself, who go all gaga when they find something they've been looking for, even if its (gasp!) USED. And who trade, not caring if what they get is a good copy on cassette of a bootleg CD, just because we want it for OURSELVES, because we love Soundgarden and want everything we can get that is Soundgarden. Then there are those of you out there who are apparently looking to "collect" things you can keep on display, in their "original wrappers" and eventually sell, hoping to make a profit. Maybe this isn't your motivation. So please, those of you so intent on finding "virgin vinyl", or anything else that is over 12 years old and still unopened, explain to me what motivates you. My husband has asked me who I'll be leaving my collection to when I die - knowing full well it will probably still be intact at that time. I even got pissed when I saw a personal ad in Goldmine from someone here in Chicago selling an autographed something or other (of course I can't find the ad now, and anyone who's actually tried to find something in Goldmine without a magnifying glass will know why) from the last Chicago SG shows. I keep thinking, is this someone who was lucky enough to be involved in those magic nights who is now turning around and prostituting him or herself? I know people have legitimate reasons for selling things (hi Deb), but this seems different - I don't know, somewhat calculating and greedy maybe. And some of these people who seem to have *stumbled* upon rarities don't seem to know much about the SG catalog as a whole. "What's this worth?" "What's that worth?" I'm sure these are legitimate questions, but shit, isn't there somewhere else you can get the info? Virgin vinyl indeed. Oh, and the comments about stuff being more expensive in Seattle - hey, more power to them. If it wasn't for Seattle the stuff wouldn't exist. I'm happy to put my money where t all started. Besides, I think its cool to get things from Seattle, since I've never been there and now I have just this little piece of the place SG came from. I know, I'm rambling, but I kind of feel like I finally threw up that nasty feeling in my stomach - and I feel so much better :) Kathie ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Mar 1998 00:07:21 -0600 From: Geoff Subject: Re: Soundgarden Gettin Back Together I'm not exactly sure why Seth doesn't want the Matt email distributed, but I'm sure he has his reasons, besides 'being selfish' and 'being a jerk'. If one stops to think about it, there are probably many reasons not to distribute it. The first reason might be that Matt explicitly or implicitly asked Seth that it not be distributed. Also, the message was a personal message to the list. If he wanted to say something to people other than the list, he would have sent his message another way, ie. MTV, CNN, etc., etc.. Possibly the biggest reason is that some people are stupid fuckers who would edit/alter the message or otherwise misrepresent/misconstrue it. Geoff p.s.
