But with that famous shot of Kurt Cobain playing on his head, it looks like he's wearing a Soundgarden top. I am not really aware if SG did any type of sampling....thats what it sounds like to me...a sampling of table tennis, but hey, what do I know... --Tracy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Jan 1998 14:24:49 -0800 From: Tim Reisbeck Subject: Re: Screaming for Life >Today I was looking at my 'Screaming Life' book, you know, the one >done by Charles Peterson. It occurs throughout various parts of the song if you listen closely. I might just be "seeing things", but I see symbolism in the ping pong sounds. I think that the song Head Down is about how society changes people as they grow up. Before people hit their adolescent years, they are innocent and just see life as "fun". All pre-adolescent children really do is mostly have fun. As the child grows up, he sees other children become more cruel and judgmental and he starts seeing more negative aspects of life. Soon he realizes life is not all fun and games. As the child grows, his life becomes the a monotonous routine of going to work to make money to support his children who will go through the same process and eventually realize that life isn't as fun as they think it is. in the game of ping-pong, the ball monotonously gets hit back and forth. The table tennis ball symbolizes the child and the table symbolize life. As the ball gets returned, it is now the child's child who will also travel across the table of life, grow up, and face the pressures of life "Then we slap your face". The The ball gets returned again and so on and so forth. The song is told from the point of view of society. This interpretation might sound crazy but if you read the lyrics of Head Down it all ties in. Also, the picture on the Superunknown inlay for Head Down is one of a fetus. It also goes along with my interpretation of the song. Out of all the Soundgarden songs, I think that Head Down is the most symbolic and the words are simple yet extremely powerful. What an amazing song. Offcourse my interpretation could be argued. After all I am 17 so technically, I am still also an adolescent and, according to the song, I am starting to realize see the evils of life! -----Original Message----- From: Tracy Thompson To: SOMMS@MITVMA.MIT.EDU Date: Friday, January 30, 1998 4:32 PM Subject: Table Tennis >In response the question of whether thats a table tennis sound at the >beginning of "Head Down", I would have to agree, but it sounds to rhythmatic >to be just a random recording of a table tennis game. I think you know where I'm coming from with this one. Tonight was opening night for G.E. and I saw a 10:00 p.m. show.. The beginning was a little boring but got quite interesting enough for me.. Then I heard Chris' song.. I won't mention the exact scene that it comes in but I will say that it's an *intimate* one. Then the rest of the movie has great mysteries with a bit of typical action taking place. All in all, I thought the movie was not at all to my expectations or my liking. I dunno, I guess I expected some HUGE romantic movie, but it was not that. It was a bit romantic.. It had lots of profanity and sex scenes and it had a few moments where the audience was on the edge of their seats, and then the rest was funny. I guess it's a 3 out of 5 from me. Sunshower was nice from what I heard :) But who knows, maybe I'll cry next time, if there is one.
