Okay, so someone said that BMF is "heavier" cuz it was the bands first major label deal? Whoa.....wait a minute here.....what happened to LTL???? I mean, that was kinda heavy, and on A&M. But that was their first label deal and it doesn't fit into the category....I just don't seem how you made that connection....I mean I guess they had a bit more control over BMF. But I don't think that BMF is their heaviest album....I don't know what to classify as "heavy" but in my heart, it ain't BMF....it always seems like the "sane & sound" album for some reason....i don't know why that word is there....it was the first thing to pop in my head. But hells yeah, it's gotta a hella lot more sound going on in there....I guess it's heavy with sounds....does that make any sense. I'm not a musician, so i can be like, "yeah well it'z the drop 'Z' tuning or whatever...just my take on it Okay.......Poll......well I haven't given it much thought...but here goes.... 1. Toy Box was actually recorded durring the Screaming Life sessions ('87)... so you see, they were "dark" even way back when. -- bye bye -js mailto:jordans@ucsd.edu http://sdcc10.ucsd.edu/~jasnodgr/fm/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 07:55:06 -0800 From: John Scully Subject: Re: Poll of Heaviness Greetings, I feel that whilst doing LTL, soundgarden had not yet properly evolved into what they were to become. What I mean is if you listen to LTL, followed by DOTUS, you'll notice distinct differences in the style of music they played and this may be why they would sound a tad *heavy* to someone. My theory on this anomaly (I really should stop showing off using big words) is because LTL was merely a transition album for them - but hey, what do I know? Oh well, outta here...... Well, I just got Great Expectations today, since it wasn't released in Canada until Tuesday, and I have to say, Sunshower has its good times and bad times. Pretty weird for Chris to go on singing that stupid "It's alright" so many times, and well, the whole eerieness of it all. Just Chris without Kim playing guitar gives me the creeps. And, did any one else notice that Chris changed his publishing company? Remember how it was "You make me sick, I make Music"? Now, it's "Chris Cornell Music". Good originality Chris. Great way of keeping the humour after the breakup. Finally, Sunshower sounds too much of a love song to his wife Susan, than a regular song. You got the whole thing sounding like a love ballad, but it makes sense. I mean, you right really great songs, and you're married. Wouldn't your wife appreciate some lovey-dovey songs that you could write for her. Apparantly this is one of the songs she likes so much, she got Eleven to play it with him. Nice one. Dave wrote: >"Sunshower sounds like too much of a love song to his wife Susan than a >regular song" >I mean, you write really great songs when your married...wouldn't your wife >appreciate some lovey-dovey song that you could write for her.." I have been playing the hell out of the song Sunshower, and I agree with Dave, that it is a love song to Susan. A great one at that! Just pay attention to the lyrics and it makes perfect sence. Regarding Chris writing a love song for his wife... Well...I think that with the breakup of Soundgarden, now gives Chris new freedom to write/express himself about more personal issues than what he felt that he could before, with being a part of a whole. I mean to say that he might have not felt comfortable with writing a love song about his wife and have it work well as a Soundgarden song. But now that he is a free agent... he might now feel freely to extend a bit more of himself ..than when he was one part of three others. "Dark as roses and fine as sand, I feel your healing in your sting again.." "Crawl like ivy up my spine, up my nerves and into my eyes.." "I hear you laughing and my soul is saved.. on forgotten graves you cry" To me, I think Chris is simply describing Susan (dark haired and fine looking) He see's her as this.. and the affect that she has on him..or maybe how her love affects him. In other words...that she gets under his skin in a pleasent way...(like all us loving wives do..**hehehe) She brings him joy with her laughter..and maybe what he means by "..on forgotten graves you cry.." Being that she sometimes tends to bring up bad times/old wounds that he's long forgotten about... (you men know how us women can be!...) ;-) When Chris sings: "It's alright...when your all in pain and you feel the rain come down...it's alright" Again, to me Chris may be simply referring to her having bad days (like we all do) ...or in a gloomy mood (after all- they live in Seattle where it's gloomy and rains all the time) and he reasures her that it's alright...because the feelings are normal and will soon pass as quickly as they came... "When you find your way and you see it disappear.... Oh....it's alright" With the above verse, I can maybe see Chris referring to Susan and her struggle and hard work to make a name for herself in the Seattle music industry (which she has done) and now that things are changing for her (with the breakup of Soundgarden, along with her choice to retire) alot of what she's worked to acheive for her beloved Soundgarden is now pretty much all over. Again Chris reasures, that it's okay to feel that way...and reminds that he's proud of all her accomplishments and her hard work and is also so much aware of all of her fine points..and that someday they will meet at that halfway point of happiness. As Chris backs up my hypothesis with: "..though your gardens gray...I know all your graces, someday we'll flower...in a sweet sunshower" "Eyes like oceans so far away... feathered trail to a better way" Maybe the bottom verse refers to Susan personality...maybe she is distant to him at times?? Or maybe this referres to the times when they're apart (with him recording or what not...and her working all the time )And she does have green eyes!(I've met her!) And maybe what he means by a "feathered trail to a better way" ...is that now after her retirement...she now has the opportunity to begin a new life for herself? To quote a press release: "Susan Silver Retires to persuse other interests.." ...bottom line, Chris is singing... that as time may pass ...they both will hit a point in their lives where both will have a sence of complete happiness with themselves and each other. (amongst the eventual clearing of the Seattle skys...and all will be well ...) Just my interpratation of the Cornell's happy ending...:D Christi- http://www2.netcom.com/~iawake/sgardnworship.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 12:24:06 +1100 From: wyn Subject: 22/ 1/ 97 Festival Hall - Brisbane Hi all, ~Now One year ago today, I saw Soundgarden for the first and last time, but ~this was before I was on the list so I thought that this was a good ~opportunity to send in my review of sorts. I wrote this up basically when ~I got home that night so any gushing that is apparent is because I was ~still in the moment. 22/1/97 Festival Hall, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia From the moment they all stepped on stage and broke into _Spoonman_ I kn ew this was going to be one of the best shows I've ever seen. They played _Searching With My Good Eye Closed_, I was so happy, I was in a good spot just outside the mosh and I could see well from there. I had said earlier that night that if they played _Searching _ my evening would be made because it was my favourite song at the time. They played all the singles though I didn't recall hearing _Fell On Black Days_. _Black hole sun_ Was interesting solo, since it made the lyrics clearer, but I think it perhaps pissed a few people off that it wasn't the same. When they left the stage before the encore I felt very deflated, they had just finished _Slaves and bulldozers_ and wound it right down with heaps of feedback, so it wasn't the right tempo to leave on. When they came back Chris said that this song was one of his favourites, which happened to be _Head Down_. Near the end of the song Tim Rogers (You Am I) came out and Ben went to the drum kit and Tim helped, while Matt played bass for a bit. The returning to their respective places, played _Jesus Christ Pose_ which was brilliant. When that finished I thought Chris had left the stage but in fact was sitting on the floor or something and they were playing a feedback laden version of _Nothing To Say_, Ben got up a guy from the audience to play with the dials on his amp for him. When they all left the stage they left feedback blaring behind them. I felt that they left it on the wrong song but suppose I'm used to heari ng the usual setlist of bands like Regurgitator who always end with a thumping crowd pleaser to end with, so you walk out on a good note. Although I definitely have to see them again. ~That obviously was a nice thought at the time but I doubt will ever ~happen. It was 2 hours long. Matt was deluged with questions. He answered as many of the questions of his choosing as he could. He revealed a little about what has been happening with him lately, answering some of the questions which have been tossed about on the list. He said he is done working with the pumpkins as far as he knows, and that he recorded 7 songs with them and that he didn't know how many would make it onto the record. He said that they were working on another Wellwater album for release this year. WWC are opening for OLP/Everclear this monday, the 25th. Ben Shepherd will not be performing with them, as he is on "semi-permanent hiatus" from Wellwater. And most importantly, Wellwater will be taking over the universe in 1999. I believe it was all logged and should be posted on the list and or unofficial website in the near future. That's all I know.
