Anyone out there have any idea why it's taking so damn long for them to send me anything...like that damn welcome package? I was even hoping that I joined in time to get one of those cool holiday postcards that everyone was ravin' about! Anyone else out there have to wait this long? And on a brighter note...I got the WWC from third gear today! Pretty damn cool! It came w/a small poster of the cd cover and a postcard w/the cover as well. I'll tell ya, i'd rather deal with those indies any damn day! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 16:49:53 +0100 From: Pablo Campoy Subject: Re: Soundgarden Bashing > Am I the only one who runs into this crap? Anyone else run into this? > > Bill My problem with Soundgarden is just that very few people know them here. Apart from my friends I cannot talk to anybody about them 'cos the answer is : "Sound...what? Oh yes, I know who they are, the band which plays Lemon Tree (the german poppie lame group Fool's Garden), don't they?" If I made a query among the people I know who know SG the result would be (more or less): GENIOUS 10%, noise 1%, don't know 89%. The situation you are referring to is the one I live with Jane's Addiction. Soundgarden and them are the only untouchable groups for me. But I know NOBODY who likes Jane's apart from me. Even my friends, fans of Soungarden, can't stand Perry Farrell's voice. So the thing is me against the world. That is still the greatest SNL ever. Gallagwar ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 15:00:11 -0600 From: Magdalene V Hill Subject: Forwarded mail.... Soundgarden is no more. So we WILL NOT hear a new SG release!? exactly. anyway, i didn't expect any empathy. i'm just a pissy sp fan. soundgarden bashing: whenever i listed to soundgarden in my dorm room, my roommate walks around making sounds like she's hooked up to a wah pedal. then she like, makes screaming noises and only says the words at the ends of sentences. i only know one person who likes soundgarden on this campus. it really sucks. so, i AM glad to be on the list. thanks maggie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jan 1998 14:13:33 -0800 From: John DiPanfilo Subject: Re: Jim Carey and SG I totally agree. The one thing that I must say about the SNL performance is that it seems (to me at least) that Chris's voice during "Pretty Noose is a half step off. Did anybody else notice this? I am by no means saying that that performance is bad, I loved it! I am a huge SG fan and I was just curious as to if anyone else had noticed this. -John "White Lemon days" _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? But it was cool to see them play on network television. Half a step off? Yeah, I haven't watched it in awhile but it seems reasonable to sing the song in a lower key on your less-than-best vocal days. I think that's a very interesting and observant idea. I do think the "vain parade" idea is a definite connection, but I don't think there is a conscious connection between these two songs. I've been thinking and thinking about it, though, and I kind of see this movie within a movie idea brewing. I've always seen Hand of God as a satire on religion, particularly the Evangelical type preachers and the wrathful, judgemental God of the "fire and brimstone" teachings. To me it doesn't speak of a literal parade, but of watching life go by - perhaps just the act of living and seeing how others are going about their business. Anyway, the movie-within-a movie would be the girl in Flower. She would represent the meaningless "vain parade". So, picture this: Now I would like friends, this evening, We should stand there, With all other of God's creatures on the curbstone, And watch this march of time. Let us take our stand with them. Then we see Flower, ending with Time crept up on her She's an early gray Her reflection looks concerned And flowers hit her grave - they are watching her life, and it inspires the Hebrew sage to say: "Vanity of vanities. The whole thing is a vain parade. It has no meaning." So, even though I don't think the connection was a deliberate one, you definitely can make a case for one:) Kathie ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 15 Jan 1998 to 16 Jan 1998 ************************************************
