What makes them so qualified to tell us what's good and what's not. It's only their goddamn opinions. And my opinion is that Sunshower is fuckin amazing. It's a beautiful song. And the lyrics are beautiful and meaningful (unlike the spoutings of most reviewers) as only C.C. can do. So please remember that it's ok to read the reviews. But just remember to laugh at them afterwards. I have two boots with this song on it. It's not a Soundgarden song and they don't perform it, a guy the call "Legend" does. Who the hell is legend!? It sounds a lot like Michael Palin, but I don't know. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? On another note... Enough of songs we want to hear Chris cover, let's talk about Soundgarden songs we want to hear other bands cover. Let's face it, there are only a few bands out there good enough to play Soundgarden's style. I would love to hear a band such as Pearl Jam or possibly a band like Metallica cover a Soundgarden song. Grunge is dead so there are few bands that are capable of making Soundgarden's massive sounds. Any suggestions of bands to play SG songs are great and suggestions for songs are even better. I would love to hear someone cover The Day I Tried To Live or My Wave or Tighter and Tighter or Room A Thousand Years Wide. It would just be great to hear another band (a respectable one though) take a crack at Soundgarden's material. More fluff... I bought the G.E. Soundtrack yesterday and I must say, I was disappointed. Aside from Sunshower, the only good songs are by Poe, the Dead, and that one by Reef (who the hell are they?). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 11:02:24 +1300 From: Stuart Appleby Subject: Re: Metal Survey Results > > http://www.ideal.net.au/~crowley/metalsurvey/ hey, i was checking out the survey results for sg, they did pretty good under the circumstances, you know, so here they are. Both "Sunshower" and "Ave Maria" were huge disappointments in that the originality and emotion that marked the Soundgarden (and Cornell) work of yore is completely lacking. "Sunshower" really is just a rock ballad -- not at all the stunning, imaginative songs that "Seasons" and the acoustic version of "Like Suicide" are -- and I'd take a classical soprano's version of "Ave Maria" over Cornell's forced rendition any day. He just sounds like he's trying too hard these days, and I wonder if this is a continuation of the slide I feel really started happening on DOTU. See? This is what happens when I have to change my email address. I get bitter. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 20:05:44 EST From: Remy2Rogue Subject: Re: Oh Sherry....*gag* I felt the same way about ave maria....it was like he just tried too much. and the keybords on it were done with haste......they sounded a little sloppy and too loud compared to Chris's voice... I also felt that natasha's additional vocals took away from the quality of the song as well. --grace ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 20:09:38 -0500 From: NIKI FREER Subject: Re: Oh Sherry....*gag* seth wrote: >This review seems pretty much on the mark to me. >Both "Sunshower" and "Ave Maria" were huge >disappointments in that the originality and emotion that >marked the Soundgarden (and Cornell) work of yore is >completely lacking. the review was pretty harsh on the song. but i like Sunshower, i really do. but i definately agree that there is that kind of "ehh" about it that makes me not want to put it on endless repeat like i used to do with other songs. and Ave Maria, however pretty as it can be, really got on my nerves today. i listened to it for the first time in a while, to tape it for someone, and just really was almost bored by it. i was sad that i felt that way, but it really doesn't do anything to me at all now that i'm out of the "ohmigod new cornell music" stage. there's something bad about natasha's voice, it seems to clash way too hard against CC's, the drums don't do anything, and that "tick-tick-tick" sound coming in at about the 3rd time he repeats the verses just grated my nerves really badly. = ( >"Sunshower" really is just a rock ballad -- not at all >the stunning, imaginative songs that "Seasons" and >the acoustic version of "Like Suicide" agreed. i like the song, i like it...but not as much as i hoped to. i mean, once i get past that "new music" block of "oh it's so good!" i start to criticize it... (just like we all did when DOTU came out) there *is* a lot lacking, there really is. i'm really hoping that this isn't a trend, that the album he is going to put out isn't that uninspired. he's got to have some better stuff in the Cornell vaults.. .. "sunshower" sounds like someone said "we need a sappy love song for this movie, will you write it please?" and it seems to have something to do with the interference of Eleven's members as well, the poppy- ness of them is putting a big damper on cornell's work. >He just sounds like he's trying too hard these days, >and I wonder if this is a continuation of the slide I >feel really started happening on DOTU. let's just hope not... mind riot (again becoming introspective and deep) ____ buying lies and stealing jokes and laughing every time i choke now i know why you've been shaking ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S O U N D G A R D E N 1 9 8 4 - 1 9 9 7 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 21:34:52 EST From: ThNrthFace Subject: *gag* & a springtime fresh BMF In a message dated 98-01-07 12:57:13 EST, swr@ACSU.BUFFALO.EDU writes: << Dear God, please don't let CC turn into Steve Perry. And I think the review of Sunshower was about as accurate as they come. Same with Ave Maria, good god, I think that song could definately cause some severe mental disorders if listened to. I know I can't listen to the whole thing all the way through... It took me 4 days to get through it. Which brings me to today, I listened to BMF today like it was for the first time (really loudly too, you just can't listen to it on low volume, it's impossible) and it's still as fresh as ever. Now if they could only made a dryer sheet that would make your clothes smell as springtime fresh as BMF... I am definately not impressed with the new CC efforts. If that is the road Chris decides to take, then that's his choice, and I wish him well. But I know I'm not going to buy his works based on his namesake. If the feeling and emotion isn't there, maybe it's time for something else... Actually, the commercial didn't specifically mention beer, > but mentioned a promotion the company did in which Soundgarden was paid > $250 000 to play a surprise gig in a small club in Vancouver. i was thinking more along the lines of an international ad camp, like the delta airlines commercial. i dunno how many are familiar w/ it, but it was thru that ad that my eyes were opened to one of the most stunning creations *ever* - adiemus' songs of sanctuary..... i've lit on lots of my fav songs, etc. via tv adverts, and i'm sure countless others have too... the right commercial can do wonders for both the product it's promoting & the artist/s that're promoting *it* {did that make any sense?}... take the nissan & lexus camps, the circuit city ad ("oh daddy, you paid TOO much for that camcorder!") & the one w/ the baby singing opera (just to name a few)... personally, i'd be PROUD to hear one of my fav songs set to the sight of a striking, 15 second work of art..... > And I must admit, after seeing the commercial dozens of times, I found > that Molson beer tasted a little bit better than it did previously. lol! well, i know i'll be flying delta from now on. =) Raine 'I'm a sweet little cupcake - BAKED BY THE DEVIL!!!' ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jan 1998 23:24:35 -0600 From: Kathie and David Subject: Remembering the First Time Every once in a while I take all my SG recordings and listen to them in order, which I've been in the middle of for a while now (since I can't just sit around listening to music all day, unfortunately). Anyway, I just recently listened to Louder Than Love, which has the first SG song I ever heard on it: Loud Love. I was wondering how people feel/think when they hear the very first SG song they ever heard. Does it still move you? Is it special just because it was first? I still get like electric bolts all through me every time I hear the opening of Loud Love. I absolutely love the song, partly because it was my *first*. And it brings back such great memories - discovering this terrific band for the first time. I know we constantly criticize MTV, but at the time I saw Loud Love, SG wasn't being played on the radio at all, at least not where I was living (Kentucky). I saw them on Headbangers Ball, which granted was boring as hell until I saw them, and then after that I would watch just hoping to see them again. So, even though I hate MTV, I am grateful to them (to Riki Rachtman, in particular - who isn't even there anymore) for first opening my eyes and ears to Soundgarden. Well, on to Loudest Love..... Kathie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jan 1998 07:30:49 +0100 From: sabrina Subject: gag again... this one's better Just when I finished smiling about the last review, I stumbled on to this one taken from the Mr Showbiz website. The soundtrack is rated 80/100... and sounds more or less positive when you first read it like... Cornell's "Sunshower" has already received considerable airplay, and why not? The former head-banging frontman has crafted an elegant slice of classic-rock balladry that balances out its Kansas and Boston leanings with a mandolin-inflected interlude straight out of "Give a Little Bit"-era Supertramp. And you thought the seventies were over. paraphrased and put bluntly it probably means "Chris has retired from headbanging with SG and is now a big sap". Being compared with Journey is bad enough... now the song has Boston and Kansas leanings (and I wouldn't argue with that either). Whereas Seasons sounded from the heart, a truly unique and genuine song.... Sunshower just makes me cringe everytime I hear it or read the lyrics posted here on the list. I don't know if Chris is just in some sort of rebound phase, where he's rebelling against anything that sounded like SG by singing... umm... "rock ballads" or if he really does have a pile of Journey -sounding demos sitting on his desk (which would then make me understand why his music wasn't picked for the Bond movie... god I'm mean ;-). But if Ave Maria was the first and Sunshower the second sign of the direction his music is taking, then I'm worried. sabrina ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 7 Jan 1998 to 8 Jan 1998 **********************************************
