Ty Cobb. Jen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 21:24:13 +1300 From: Stuart Appleby Subject: soundgarden christmas carol i think that room a thousand years wide is a pretty festive song and the lyrics really go along with it. i mean kim wrote them, and if you coloured his hair white and gave him a fluffy red suit he'd resemble everyones favourite friend Santa Claus, and maybe that's what he's trying to inspire. but anyway the lyrics are obviously written by the point of veiw of an excited child awaiting christmas on christmas eve. -Listen, hear, he is inside <~~~thats santa claus delivering presents -one who lives while others lie <~~~santa makes his appearance while everyone is asleep -i close my eyes and walk a thousand years -a thousand years that aren't mine <~~~the kid want's to sleep and he's so excited he feels like he's waiting a very long time -it seems he's near me as i walk <~~~santa is like in the next room -one who loved what love denied <~~~well i think thats just a space filler -he lives these years that i walk blind <~~~santa lives all alone at the north pole all year and kim completely ignores santa except for during the festive season -all these years cannot be mine <~~~kim now denies his blatant ingoring of santa see, now the kid starts getting depressed and he feels that he is not appreciating santa -tomorrow begat tomorrow etc. <~~~ christmas will be over like that well, now the kid starts thinking about how santa must hate his profession: -a thousand doors a thousand lies <~~~santa has to give presents to thousands of horrible little children who lie about being good over the year -rooms a thousand years wide <~~~santa is sick and tired of it and he wants to throw in the towel and every house feels like it takes forever to do and he feels retirement beckoning -he walks in the cold sun and wind <~~~santa lives alone at the north pole with nothing to do except roam the desolate plains, and let's face it, mrs. claus isn't getting any younger. -all these years will not begin <~~~santa's hoping that the next year will go by nice and slow. so basically in this song kim is saying give santa a break and why don't all the bums uptown dressed up as santa give him a hand in delivering some of those damn presents. from graham:) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 03:31:10 EST From: Gardner167 Subject: jen grover, email me.SORRY LIST. been out of the loop for a while, just trying to find a few garden buddies..... sorry again list. mike. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 19:47:15 GMT From: SIMON 'Hellboy' ROBERTS <973790971@97.HUMBER.AC.UK> Subject: Santa Kim ALRIGHTY!!! Shit! You're right, Kim IS Santa! Personally, I've always found it rather unnerving that 'SANTA' is an anagram of 'SATAN', plus he wears red........ Disturbing thought. Yeah, I heard that Kim is working on a 40 song strong b-side compilation. Let's hope that sees the light of day along with a vid-ography. Was looking through some old issues of Raygun magazine the other day and I stumbled across an article on Wellwater Conspiracy. Can't remember what issue it was in (I think it was the one from this year with the Chemical Brothers on the front) but it was pretty interesting as it interviewed Matt and the ex-Monster Magnet guitarist (I forget his name. Brian McNabe? I dunno..). Ben was still in bed or something. I can find out what issue it was exactly and other stuff if anyone is interested? Great idea about the most x-mas SG song. Tycobb sounds pretty good to me (BAH, HUMBUG! etc..) but I'll have a listen tonight and give you my more *festive* sugestion later. Same goes for my tracklisting of the b-sides CD. By the way, what exactly IS Motorcycle loop? I know it was a b-side on the euro edition of FOBD but what does it sound like? Is it a song or spoken word or something else entirely? No more questions, I'll get off the soapbox. Bye. Hellboy ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 16:32:51 -0600 From: "Pamela J. I wasn't sure.. I mean I haven't kept up. I listened to Devilhead before Ben was with them and then just before Ben joined them or started working with them I had kinda lost intrest. Imean I still like them...but ya know I just didn't up with any ifo onthe band other than what was in my cd player so I had no idea he left..or if he has or what. Hell I dunno. The Rock & Roll Yearbook, April (we all know what this means) Joe Camel wasn't the only furry beast who had a bad year. When Soundgarden broke up in April, the bell tolled for all the grunge-crazed early '90s and the millions of clone bands that had spawned. In other words: Please have your desk cleaned out by 5 pm, Mr. Weiland. Soundgarden were the ultimate Seattle grunge arch-type; Chris Cornell's bare chest and fabulous black mane were practically registered Sub Pop trade marks. Except the band couldn't ride its beefccake appeal into late-'90s rock stardom, where loud guitars and earnestly grunted dispair feel like yesterday's flannel. Grunge made a perfect soundtrack yo downwardly mobline teen tramua. But, as the great philosopher nored, children get older; the screaming inner children of grunge had grown up. Doesn't that just make yu want to get up and break thing? Best suggestion... Ty Cobb is a fix for anger.. if it doesn't fule the fire. The worst part about this is there's a picture of two people living in Seattle (with rain in the back ground, of course.. I mean, I live here.. I know how it is) and they have had their tatoos removed, the guy is shaving off his goatee and the girl combing out her dreds.. a convieniently places poster from Hype! in the back ground, and a big box on the floor that says To: Good Will. In the box are flannels, Doc Martains and.. our beloved boys.. The true believers cannot let Soundgarden ever die. The greatest and most influencial bands are always remembered after they leave and some are even appreciated more after they have gone. In my mind, Soundgarden is alive and well, just in some strange after-life deep in my mind. I cherish every work and won't stop listening. I've changed bunches of peoples opinions and Soundgarden and have turned many into die hard fans and I will continue to do this for as long as I am able to reach people. Grunge may truly be dead in the public's eyes but then again, what the hell does the public know. They're all listening to Puff Daddy and Jewel and Chumbawumba and Marilyn Manson and Wu Tang while our minds are still set to the early 90's when grunge was king. Let's face it, many of those bands we listened to in the grunge days are gone (i.e. Soundgarden, Nirvana, STP, AiC) and the ones that are still around have gone sour. But if there is one person who buys the new Pearl Jam cd or the new Bush cd (why would anybody, god do they suck) and doesn't think of Soundgarden, than it can truly be said that grunge is dead. I know it's a long shot but a guy can dream can't he Mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Dec 1997 23:14:55 -0500 From: "Michelle A. Leco" Subject: Grunge - Is it dead? Forgive me if I'm being stupid. But I don't really understand this whole thread of debate. Grunge is just another means to put a title on something people don't understand. Sure it came about because for a period there were a lot of people listening to the "Seattle Sound" and wearing flannel. And I'm sure a lot of them did it (and no longer do it) because it was the *trend* and they thought it was cool. But it's the people who don't really understand the music (or the people of the music) who say it's dead now. You know the music *critics* out there. What really qualifies them anyway? (But that's a whole other arguement.) And from past SOMMS postings, it's quite clear what we all think of them. I guess my point is that I don't really think that it's important whether grunge is dead or not. It's just a convenient word. Sure I used to wear flannel and I still do. But I wear a lot of other stuff too. And I love SG and lots of other bands and will continue to do so no matter what others say. And I'm proud to say that I don't consider myself to neatly fit into a god damn label that others felt necessary to create so that bands like Soundgarden could be more *acceptable* (in their eyes) in the mainstream. The important thing is that we all love SG not because they were classified as grunge. But because their music moved us figuratively, physically and emotionally. And every time we listen to their music, we continue to get enjoyment out of it. And isn't that what are boys would want? I just read Entertainment Wekly's review of A-Sides and it made me happy that such a commercial mag gave it an A! Not only is it a glowing review, but it actually mentions "Hands All Over" and "Nothing To Say", to which most MTV viewers and fairweather SG fans can only say, "What are those songs?" Matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 1997 01:29:34 EST From: Nothng2Say Subject: But... Read this one if you want to get PISSED OFF. But, today I also read SPIN's review of A-Sides. All I can say is that the reviewer must have something really personal against the band, probably an old, old, flame of Susan Silver. Anyway all he does is acuse SG of ripping off everyone, and describes all the songs as a dull-thud (Except of course the ever-radio-friendly BHS). Apparently the reviewer bases his view of SG as having a jock mentality on the fact that Chris mentions ("His") snake three times on the album. Notice he says "His" not "a" or just "snakes", so he can bend the facts and propogate what the reviewer's dirty mind hears. Then he mentions some bullshit about not seeing a single fan in a Soundgarden T-shirt at a show on Lollapalooza '96. I have come to the conclusion that Chuck Eddy (The reviewer) is a blind bullshitter. Luv, Matt P.S. And after all this it was given a rating of 6. Which just says to me that this prick couldn't even back up his bullshit with a lower score, PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS FUCKNUT. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Dec 1997 01:46:52 -0500 From: "Michelle A. Leco" Subject: Interview archive So I went to Seth's site, as I often do to peruse the SG files. And eventually I was led to read the MTV chat w/Chris about the CD+. I recommend reading it yourself if you want a laugh. Afterall, it's a combination of MTV on-line and AOL subscribers (no offense). Anyway, this was one of the Q&A's. "IAWAKE: Will you ever release a solo album? S0UNDGRDNx: Probably some day When I'm balding and I hit my Phil Collins stage. " I wonder if Chris remembers this. He also rips on Pittsburgh a couple of times. Which is where I'm from and I think it's hilarious. Yes Chris, Pittsburgh may well be Hell! http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/misc/mtv.html Peace and Love Michelle ------------------------------ End of SOMMS Digest - 9 Dec 1997 to 10 Dec 1997 ***********************************************
