There is this comedy show called Almost Live! recorded here in Seattle. It's like Saturday Night Live, only it's funny :). Anyway, there is a reoccuring sketch called The Lame List, which some guy says stuff to a bunch of metalheads and if they think it blows they shout "LAME". And if the question is too hard to understand to them, they just stand there, confused with mouths gaping. It's FUNNY AS HELL, which probably doesn't from how I'm explaining it. And guess who I've seen making an appearence quite a few times?? None other than some guy named Kim Thayil.....ever heard of him? :). Good tounge-in-cheek humor about the stereotypical views of so-called metalheads. I haven't watched the show in ages. Anyone know if Kim is still on The Lame List? "I worked at McDonald's for two weeks, and I was fired and told by the assistant manager--who went to some Hamburger University or something to get that position--that I was not McDonald's material. And I threw my uniform at him and said: Thank you, that's the best thing I've heard all week! And I walked out." -Kim Thayil /\ /\ 'o' -The Cat ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 03:03:19 -0500 From: Dena White Subject: ...but what is Matt gonna wear? I just had the MOST scarriest thought ( i know.. I got good grammar and all that ) Just picture this............... Matt joins the Pumkins.... they do an album.. then a photo shoot........ what the HELL Is Matt gonna wear? I know this sounds totally superficial but hear me out........Does anyone remember even some of the promo photos from the pumkins last album? the one photo that stands out in my head is the Rolling Stone cover where they were all decked out in silver/black and all made up. Somehow I just cant see Matt in that picture... call me wierd but you've got Darcy in all her made up glory.... Billy with his skinned head and Zero shirt and James with his black lined eyes and bleach streaked hair. Matt?? Matt what the hell would Matt wear? Surely none of you can see him with eyeliner or dyed hair.... I surely dont see him in any kind of vinyl pants ( well ok...I do, but only in dreams ) or any kind of get up like that.Matt just doesnt seem the type to be all 'rockstar-ed' out.... I see Matt wearing some kind of jeans Tshirt and boots. Basically Matt just being his down to earth self. The imagery of putting Matt into that kind of picture or any Pumkins picture even closly resembeling that kind of garb just make me want to HURL! HURL! HURL!! Does anyone get what I am saying? I dont think that visually the Pumkins could manage to fit Matt into thier scheme of things.... (( all the more reason for Matt not to do this IMHO.. sorry to any SP fans.. Im just not a big fan of thiers ) even if Matt does work out and is in the band. Anyone care to ellaborate on this????? I think that someone needs to pinch me.. Im having this really bad nightmare of a year.' Mom.. Soundgarden..my car...and now Matt joining SP. damn this has got to be one big huge NIGHTMARE!!!! HURLING-LY yours Dena :)~ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 00:12:33 -0800 From: The Cat Subject: Hello me it's me again Dena White- Never going to a SG concert myself I love to hear recollections of other's memories at them. So peoples dust off those memories and lets hear them :). Obviously alot of you are upset over this Matt/SP thing. I've gotten over it. Because, even though about 6 months to this day all you would ever hear on the radio or MTV were the Pumpkins, you have to respect them as musicians. They've stuck to their roots (I think) and even with Billy's litte adventure to electronica he came back to acoustics. My friend, who normally listens to stuff like Dreamtheatre and Megadeth, listens to the Pumpkins, saying "This is as 'alternative' as I'll go" :). Though I'm not a fan of the Pumpkins myself, at least they had the common sense to not over-exploit themselves to the point as a 'musical group of the moment' (like for example Hanson and the Spice Girls, who would later become the butt of many jokes on MTV). So through that whole period of the spotlight shone on them by MTV and various radio stations they still had the respect as musicians. I don't know how people can be THAT upset over Matt joining *temporarily* with the Pumpkins. I mean, even Chris was (still is?) interested in them. This 'Industry's Guide to 90's Music' book....the title alone should've gave away how what the author would have thought about Soundgarden. I'm going to find that guy's e-mail address and send him a little present :). Here's something unrelated. 'SOMMS coincidental phenomenon' again.....looking at Rebekah Henderson's last comment on her last post 'May Soundgarden be with you' freaked me out. Because recently when I searched the web on Yahoo on the subject 'Chris Cornell' I was brought to this site called 'Chris Cornell's Star Wars Page' (or something like that). Which apparently had nothing to do with the Chris we know from SG but by a guy with the same name. Another weird coincidence originating from SOMMS......... Here ya go.. do with it what you will. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ >>p.s. for any Soundgarden fans on the list (in casse you didn't know Kim Thayil is a big Goodness fan) my drummer was up at a big drum festival in Vancouver this weekend and Matt Cameron (who was one of the exhibitionists had to leave early to go to L.A. and record on the new Smashing Pumpkins album.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 01:08:17 -0800 From: Jordan Snodgrass Subject: Do not leave trash bags here. Violators will be fined $25/bag. How's it goin', eh? All those pissed about Matt & his pumpkins. Did any of you ever stop to think that Matt will IMPROVE this "horrible" band? Also, someone wrote, "Could you imagine that guitarist (i forget the name) playing Mailman?" I don't want to sound like I'm defending Iha here, but come on... if you're going to use evidence against him, USE EVIDENCE. My dog's nephew can play Mailman. Who CAN'T play Mailman? Mailman is up there with My Wave and Gun as the hardest songs to play. BWHAHAHA@#$% Now had you said, "Could you imagine that guitarist (i forget his name) playing any of Kim's solos?" .. THEN you would have a strong argument, and THEN I wouldn't be bagging on you right now and wasting time and bandwidth in the proccess. Go back and read Willy Flanders' post about respecting/enjoying. There is no way i would buy a pumpkins record, no matter if > all of SG was on it. It's against my principles. woah, this news has really stirred up some emotion. all these listers saying how much it sucks, how much the pumpkins suck, what was matt thinking, blah blah blah. take a step back and think about it. this is about more than your own musical tastes - who you like and who sucks. this is about a man who walked away from a *major* part of his life, and it seems this is how he is going to fill part of that void. you would begrudge him that? > Also, what happens when when Matt writes some songs for them? Could you > imagine Corgan attempting to sing Limo Wreck? What a joke. Or that > guitarist (i forget the name) playing Mailman? Or Fresh Tendrils? And I > hope i'm correct in saying that Matt wouldn't question his musical > integrity and change his songwriting to fit with the pumpkins. That is all okay mike, hold the phone. none of us own a crystal ball. none of us know the future. and that is what makes this so interesting. aren't you in the least bit interested in how matt will sound with this band? or curious as to how *they* will change to accommodate him? matt has confirmed he is joining the smashing pumpkins in the studio, obviously to lay down drum tracks for their next record. that's as far as it goes, for now. yes, the pumpkins are looking for a full-time drummer. and yes, matt might (big might, of course, since I haven't spoken to him in quite awhile) be looking for something a little more permanent and a little less tenuous than hater, wellwater or cavedweller. this is an opportunity for matt to see how things fit, to write another chapter (long or short) in his book of life. odds are that he will only record with them, leaving some other drummer (ie. sucker) to try and match his beats on tour. would that really be so bad for us as soundgarden, and more importantly, *matt* fans? as for matt changing his songwriting, how do you know that he is actually offering any? and do we really know what matt's songwriting really amounts to anyway, considering that we have rarely ever heard him write music outside the soundgarden sphere of influence? a situation like this is nowhere near as easy as imagining billy corgan singing 'limo wreck' (to which matt wrote no lyrics, which in my book makes it a moot point). as for questions of musical stylings, I get the feeling that some listers have a fairly limited knowledge of what the smashing pumpkins have actually recorded. sure, soundgarden were wonderful and played some particularly crushing stuff, but they certainly weren't the only band out there playing loud music. there are some similarities (anybody for some real discussion?), whether you respect the band from chicago or not. musical stylings continued, matt will not be the first accomplished or respected drummer to have recorded with or been counted as a member of the pumpkins. jimmy chaimberlain, the band's original drummer, was an *excellent* skinsman, a drummer I had much respect for as a musician and as a percussionist. he was definitely no slouch, so don't expect the remaining pumpkins to fall over and die as soon as matt plays one fill. hmmm. I seem to be going on and on. let it just be said that none of us know which way this will go. the news is still very fresh, the thought very unfamiliar. please let it sink in before you start to judge. or better yet, try buying the record before you make up your mind. you might be pleasantly surprised. justin ------ and I'm lost behind the words I'll never find and I'm left behind as the seasons roll on by - words by chris cornell ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 18:49:29 +0800 From: georgia Subject: bleed together single Greetings list - I have done a little checking around locally here in West Australia, and there is no Bleed Together single poised for official release. Everyone out there moaning about how much they hate the SP and how they'll 'have to' buy SP records - FUCK OFF, don't buy the records, you won't be doing Matt any favours by buying it and then eternally bitching about it because you hate everything else on the CD, I mean you didn't buy SG stuff just for the drum tracks but for the entire product, Ben, Chris, Kim AND Matt! If you want to support Matt, buy Hater and Wellwater albums and if you don't like those buy something else, nobody's forcing you! On a slightly less serious note I DO agree that Matt would look completely out of place in a SP photo shoot and would also look ridiculous in eyeliner and vinyl. What do you think, ladies? Matt as a cross-dresser, does it work for you? I'll close that can of worms now. Do you think that IS Kim doing vocals on Exit Stonehenge? He said once in a guitar mag interview that he could shout but not sing, so who knows? Highly humorous track, anyway. As for the 'Floyd comparisons, I think they're very evident on Down.... and are there in spirit on both 'Motorfinger and Superunknown. They don't tend to go for any all out Floyd-esque songs but the spectre certainly drifts through alot of their songs. I'd mention some examples but it's hard to nail down, although Boot Camp is as close as they get. Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is one of my all time fave albums and Pigs (from Animals) is my favourite song by them, Chris Cornell has said that 'Floyd's first album (Piper At The Gates Of Dawn) is the record that *changed his life*, so there's gotta be an influence somewhere in there. An option here might be me sending a CD-rom to a college student on a residential network with the archive burned onto it. Soon I'll be leaving school for Christmas vacation.
