Leco" Subject: Stifling the Creativity I can't understand why such an enormous talent as Matt would consent to joining SP. I can only hope that it's temporary. I fully support colaboration between artists on a side project. But I think it will be impossible for him to vocalize his individual talents as a permanent member of a band that has established it's sound. It'll just be SP with Matt banging on the drums like most others. Really, I think that Chris is taking the best path right now. He has the opportunity to create what HE wants. And we'll be fortunate enough to hear the product of his genius. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 19:11:52 +0000 From: Fiona Thiessen Subject: Re: Bleed Together single Lee Christensen wrote: Sorry if I'm missing s'thing here, I've been "away" a while organising a crazy Pearl Jam Tour! :-) > So I pick up some street press and what do I see? Just b/c it's reviewed does not mean it's going to be released as a single for the public. A review of a single is just another form of promotion. Lee I could be completely wrong, (check my disclaimer above! :-) ) but as far as I've seen there has been no release (to the public) of Bleed Together as a single anywhere. -- Fiona ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 00:16:07 -0800 From: The Cat Subject: Well, this is weird...... .....late last early morning at about 2:00 am I sent the message below but it never showed up on today's digest. And I know it got through becasue it didn't bounce back. Did you peoples get it? Here it is (sorry in advance if you've already read this): --------- Begin forwarded message ---------- From: the_cat17 To: SOMMS@MIT.EDU Subject: Pink Floyd, Kim Thayil (sorta) solo album Date: Mon, 1 Dec 1997 01:59:08 -0800 Message-ID: <19971201.021248.3974.2.the_cat17@juno.com> Elric&Dagny- Here's something interesting. During an interview with LAUNCH Chris says that he got the idea for the Pretty Noose video (the one with the band playing) off of a Pink Floyd German bootleg video he saw. In the PF video, the interviewer basically hated the band. Chris said he tried to recreate this as much as possible (with the help of Alian and Natasha from eleven.....you all know that :)). So I guess Chris does like Pink Floyd..... Rich- Heh heh, yeah I just told you this in your last e-mail but for those who don't know (and to those who already know sorry because I'm new here! :)) you could find some Kim Thayil feature guitar work on a CD called Smell the Fuzz: Guitars That Rule the World vol. 2. I believe Slash also does guitar work on there too..... Soon as I find something else to say I'll post it :) --------- End forwarded message ---------- Well, now I've found somethings to say. So this whole Pink Floyd thing has been messing around with my head (or maybe it was the 3 hours sleep I got last night) but I had this strange idea. You know how a lot of you guys think DotU has a jumbled up song order? And how the total track time of the CD was exactly 65:56? I was thinking about this and the Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz thing and then I got a thought. Maybe DotU has a movie that plays exactly to it? This 65:56 thing is a bit ordered and layed out, so maybe there was a purpose behind it? Ah...I'll shut up now 'bout that, I'm blowing smoke and talking wind. I'll bet SG thought it would be just cool if they got DotU to be at that exact time :). Hmm...I can't believe it. Matt playing for the Smashing Pumpkins?? That's a surprise! Never EVER thought that would EVER happen.....yeah DeZHy, I think it's creepy that you brought up that subject and then it happened :). I think Matt is on the mailing list.......hope that stupid 'Chris joins Tool as lead singer' thing I brought up doesn't come true either :). And IMHO I think Ben was the biggest factor in SG's breakup. He just wasn't having fun. A lot of the concert reviews I've read during the DotU tour I keep reading Ben was spitting on the fans. I also read that weeks before the breakup Chris and Kim had ideas of where they want SG to go, which differed from Ben's. I also read that Chris and Kim called each other up alfter the breakup and got together to sort out the loose ends of the breakup. Like making the breakup official. Sorry if this is old news to all of you. And I'm not putting the blame of SG's breakup solely on Ben, cuz that's just ridiculous..... Just sitting here letting the 'new' news sink in... while letting it settle in my stomach I started thinking about last years tour... I still cant belive its been a year.. Hell it feels like 2 or 3..... so much shit has gone down... anyway.. I thought that I would just jot some stuff down.... Here it goes ( and hey.. at least it will break up all the other posts about Matt and SP... sigh! ) Here goes.. One year ago... Soundgarden was on tour and I was in the middle of a 3 nights of pure HEAVEN! Nov 30th, Dec.1st and Dec.2nd found me ( along with others! ) attending the San Diego and 2 LA shows to see the guys. What a great time it was.... little did I know that it would be the last I would see them together ( still kicking myself for not going to Hawaii with Vikki... UGH! ) anyway.... getting back to what I was saying.... I just wanted to say HI to all the SOMMSTERS that I have gotten out of touch with since these shows and just for the fun of it, give some memorable highlites from them...... San Diego: ------------------------ while making the 'noise' for the intro into to 'blow up' Matt grabs his guitar and heads out to the front and center of the stage.... the only time I have actually seen Matt play. Chris looking so mad that he might actually jump into the crowd to get into a fight. closing my eyes and grooving to the music and almost getting boinked in the head by someones foot as they get passed around. LA ( 1st night ): ---------------------------- Ben.... for making fun of bimbo girls in the front row... remember the dance? =) ( only later to find out that the girl he was making fun of was someone from the list.... who thought that Ben was dancing with them..HELLO... and actually was the girl who wore the short skirt to Lolla.. who said that she put up with the guy she was sitting next to .. (who go her very close to the stage) get a little graby so she could be next to Chris Cornell.... ) Having Ben, Chris then Kim notice the FUCK sign. ( how could ya miss the thing.. it was large.. NEON green and the ONLY sign in the whole auditorum! ) Being SO moved by the acoustic version of BHS..... The best night that Chris sang it (IMHO) Chris saying to a kid throwing money at him on stage " I dont need your change, tough guy. We already have it coming in." ( mind you.. I am doing that by memory... so it may not be word for word.. but its close! ) Having friends with you that apperciated SG.... And when you looked at them ( because of something that someone said or did ) you didnt have to expalin it ... They already knew! =) LA ( 2nd night ) : ------------------------- Kim giving us the thumbs up and then pointing at us for the fuck sign. Matt going off on JCP ( not like he didnt go off on any other night.. it just seemed to me that it was more so this night ) the security for being extremely dick-ish.... not letting you stand in the isle for even a minute... damn them! For that being the last Soundgarden show that I will ever see.... ( unless a miracle happens... ya right.. I know.. but it could happen =) ) Sorry to have gotten a little carried away... all these memories. anyway... enough of me. Over and Out Dena :)~ PS.. for those of you who attended the SOMMS San Diego Chapter meeting @ chevy's before the show.... I have some photos. If you would like a copy mail me. I'm not sure why the thought upsets me so much, but it does. Well, dammit, because musically I don't think he belongs there, even temporarily. I know by the calendar it's only been 8 months, but emotionally it feels like years and I'm already tired of them whoring around. I don't care if Chris wants to play with himself, but I hope he's not gonna go too mellow on us, or too pop (I still haven't heard Sunshower). I would be thrilled to death to see Ben and Matt just solidify Hater or WWC and take it on the road, even in limited ways. I wish Kim would just start his own fucking band. I guess maybe that's it-- I'd rather see them just start their own bands, do their own thing rather than trying to fit in with somebody else. I guess I think that rather than them bringing some other band up to a higher level they'll just end up being polluted or subdued by it. Dammit, I'm just depressed about all this. I watched part of Motorvision tonight and it fucking almost made me cry. Jen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 16:00:19 +0100 From: Anders Nergaard Subject: Spoonman I'll be short. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 1997 08:16:55 +1100 From: Spoonman Subject: My thoughts on matt with the pumpkins I have to say, that i will lose a lot of respect for matt if he decides to join the smashing pumpkins. Personally, I can't stand them, and there is no way on earth that I could bear watching matt with them. I hate their music, and especially corgans voice. It sends vibrations up my spine listening to it, it's so screechy. Just imagine this. An interview with the smashing pumpkins on TV. They're sitting on a couch with Matt, and all joking around. It makes me shiver to just think of it. Apart from Hanson, the smashing pumpkins are my most hated band. And Soundgarden is by far and always will be the best band to ever emerge from earth. IT would make me "sick in the mouth" as Chris would say, to have one of the members from my favourite band, being in a band that i despise. There is no way i would buy a pumpkins record, no matter if all of SG was on it. It's against my principles. Also, what happens when when Matt writes some songs for them? Could you imagine Corgan attempting to sing Limo Wreck? What a joke. Or that guitarist (i forget the name) playing Mailman? Or Fresh Tendrils? And I hope i'm correct in saying that Matt wouldn't question his musical integrity and change his songwriting to fit with the pumpkins. That is all i have to say on this matter at the moment, except for the fact that i violently hope, that Matt does NOT become a member of the smashing pumpkins. Do any others feel the same way? Mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 16:36:21 -0500 From: Dave George-Cosh Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?A_daily_synopsys=2E=09?= Well, I was sitting back a few minutes ago, downloading BHS.mp3, and I thought, well, I'll write an e-mail to SOMMS about SG! Anyway, here goes. So you're thinking, after 8 months, that the world is coming to an end. But take a look at this : Matt Cameron Released Wellwater Conspiracy's debut album Samples with the Prodigy Played on Flying Traps CD Played gigs with WWC and Hater Recently joined Queen of the Night (or something like that :) sorry) Recently joined Smashing Pumpkins as a part-time drummer Sounds pretty good? How about this? Ben Shephard Released Wellwater Conspiracy's debut album Released a Desert Sessions EP or EP's (I forget) Played gigs with WWC and Hater And this! Chris Cornell Sunshower recorded. Ave Maria recorded. Wife quits job to (IMHO!!) have a couple kids with Chris. BTW: This is my guess! and....Kim Thayil has taken spokesperson job of the group, being interviewed about A-Sides. So in fact, SG has been up to a lot. A couple high industry releases, and a few indie releases (That I personnally love, Keep up the good work, Ben!) and you've got SG. I also think that you guy's should stop be critical of Matt. It was his choice to join SP and with him being the most available, and of course, best drummer out there, wouldn't you want him to join your group? Also, with Matt's experience with the Prodigy, I think that he will be a welcome member of SP. Not saying that I like SP, I despise them, but I also believe in fate, and I wish Matt the best. Sure, I also bet that A&M, and SG themselves are on this list, reading our every word. So, let's give them something good to talk about. Finally, I LOVE that Boot Camp remix! Boot Camp is a great song, capping off SG's career, and I think that song was a HUGE foreshadowing event, letting only us, SOMMSters to guess what was to come. For CNN news, umm...I mean, cya l8r Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 16:13:21 -0600 From: Vince Varkey Subject: popularity kills Here are my thoughts on this whole Matt Cameron/Smashing Pumpkins thing. First off, technically speaking, he hasn't joined the band. According to the report, he is going to join them in the studio and that's it. But hey, I think that an announcement in the near future of him joining the band seems forthcoming. So what if he ends up joining the Smashing Pumpkins fulltime? Well..I would be very disappointed. Matt is simply one of the best drummers on the planet..his talent level is staggering. The concept of him replacing another drummer on another established band seems beneath him yet that seems to be what he is doing. Why is he doign this? I wish I knew. Someone was mentioning a Boot Camp remix? This is news to me. If someone could clue me in that would be great. -vince ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Dec 1997 19:25:07 -1200 From: Kris Subject: MATT WITH SP :) I fucking called it!!!! Well, I just got finished reading about a kazillion back-issues of SOMMS and boy, am I pooped. Anyway, I can't believe about Matt and the pumpkins and I feel that I'm the only one that hasn't heard Sunshower (figures). On a brighter noteI did see an ad for the GE soundtrack so hopefully it will be here 2 weeks after it's release date. Okay, I have a few things to discuss. I was in the bookstore today browsing/Christmas shopping when I saw this book about someones opinion about 90's rock-n-roll. Of course, I pick it up and immediatly go to the "S" section to check up on our boys. Well this critic had a major bug up his ass about SG. He was bashing them left and right. I got so pissed that I almost put it down but I didn't and read on 'til the end. He had nothing good to say about any of their earlier work (BMF included). He stoned JCP and Holy Water (2 of my fav songs btw). What songs did he rave about? You guessed it; BHS. Don't get me wrong, it's a good song and it's what started me on my long, groovey trip into SG mania. He did have good stuff to say about TDITTL and FOBD (which are also 2 of my fav songs). Then he went on to DOTU and said "they're almost home". What in the hell does that mean. I admit that I'm a "Superunknowner/Black Hole Sunner" but that was because I wasn't where I needed to be to get word of SG. You understand? But I love their earlier work as much as anything else. It's who they are and where they came from. Anyway, the man/woman/thing kept on about how Kim's guitar solos were all the same and all Matt did was keep the beat along with Ben and they shamed Chris saying that all he is is a Robert Plant wanna-be and that's what is doing it for the band. Not their exact word but in a round about way. I don't feel that people should get paid to give their opinions because it's stupid when you already have your mind firmly set in the way you feel about something, and in this case I don't think this person ever listened to any of SG stuff with and open mind and an open ear. On to other things...I ordered a SG necklace A LONG time ago and what made me think of this was because someone had mentioned it on the list about not ever taking it off (sorry, I can't remember who it was). So I called and the people told me that it's been discontinued which really pissed me off because 1. I ordered it ages ago and 2. they didn't bother to let me know. So I'm asking, if anyone out there would be willing to sale me one if they have an extra because I know you people out there buy more than one SG thing (I know I do sometimes). Or we could trade for something I have two of. Please let me know and I'll tell you what I'll be willing to part with (whether cash or items). I think that's all I have to say so until next time remember: 8 glasses of water a day, 3 glasses of milk a day, and if you drink this, expect to be in the bathroom most of the day. Adios!! Take care and be sweet!! Stay Cool, Kelly (C: P.S. Thanks to Niki (aka the Peachiest SOMMSter) for the lyrics to Sunshower. You don't know what this means to the few that haven't heard it. I like the Smashing Pumpkins. I'm not a huge fan, and I shudder when I see their concert clips of Billy being a whiny idiot. BUT... you know what? There is a separation in my mind between music I respect and music I enjoy. I respect Buddy Holly. I can't stand to listen to him though. I respect the Ramones... even so I can't enjoy a moment of them. Why do I not like this music? Probably something in my childhood turned me away from it... any number of random subjective influences can cause a person to dislike something. My point is that even if you dislike, or even hate Billy Corgan's work, you must respect what he does, and respect that his music is pure and genuine just like Soundgarden's. Grant that Corgan has noble goals in his artistic pursuits, and that he has created some of the most innovative music of this decade. I imagine a great number of you would prefer the music of Days of the New or Stone Temple Pilots to Smashing Pumpkins. But you can't respect them as artists and innovators as much as you can Corgan. One of the points of this I think, and the points of Cornell's acoustic and pop songs is that artistic talent transcends style, even if some of our musical tastes don't. Well, it finally happened. It took 8 months and it was inevitable, but it hurt all the same. I finally realized what it is that I will never hear again. I finally realized that they have disbanded. I've been aware of this since April 9th, but for some reason, it hasn't really sunk in until tonight. I was listening to one of my bootlegs and BIMH came on and I've heard this song on many other live bootlegs, but this is the first time I really *heard* it. Matt started the song with his cymbals, Chris came in next with the guitar and vocals, then Kim started in with guitar, and finally Ben's bass came drifting into my soul and I thought I would cry. I did a little, but not the bawling I was half-expecting. That moment when Ben started playing and they were all together, it felt so *right*. It felt so real that it had to have been happening live, at that very moment, when I was listening to it. But it wasn't. That moment happened over a year ago and they have all gone their separate ways since and I just wanted to scream in protest. I wanted to scream about how unjust and how wrong that was. I knew I was being selfish and I know that everything happens for a reason and their disbanding was more than likely for the right reasons; their own and they know themselves better than we do. Rationality keeps me in check, but I'm still a fan. When something you're a fan of suddenly stops, you kinda feel like the world has been turned upside down, like the rug has pulled out from under you. I felt so alone. And for the first time since that dreadful day, I want to ask one question - Why? May Soundgarden be with you. "they (some critics) shamed Chris saying that all he is is a Robert Plant wanna-be and that's what is doing it for the band." Chris Cornell is definaely not a ripoff of Robert Plant. In Soundgarden's earlier works, Chris wailed often similar to Robert Plant but in Superunknown and DOTUS, he hardly used that Robert Plant-like wail. I think during earlier Soundgarden, Chris wasn't very definate about his voice. He new that he could scream and he did it a lot. He tried a lot of different lead voices. In Tears To Forget on Screaming Life, his voice sounds cracky and British. In Little Joe, Chris attempts attempts a variety of odd voices. Towards the later albums, Chris started developing more of a definate, unique voice which didn't have many Robert Plant screams. So that critic that Kelly Hendrick refers to in her post is >completely wrong. Rolling Stone was the most guilty of this stupidity. Nearly every article is filled with the unfounded assumption that all modern rock is totally derivative of [SOME OLD POPULAR BAND THAT I LIKE], leaving out hundreds of true influences. I know the staff writers there don't listen to an album more than once. They think, "well this guy screams high... yeah, he got that from Robert Plant" without even considering that screaming high is such a basic thing to do that no one really needs to copy it from anywhere, and could come from natural experimentation. And then the style issue... I read in the archive that Soundgarden's music is just a set of restructurings of the chords of Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused." Anyone who has listened to Soundgarden for more than a week would know how vapid that idea is. And all the more irony, "Dazed and Confused" is not even original! It's literally a rip-off of a folk song by Jake Holmes of the SAME TITLE. Just had to blow off some steam.
