Better than Seasons. Haven't heard Ave Maria. But I have a strong feeling that Chris will get back to his roots on his solo album...... To everyone- I thought you guys might find this an interesting read. Here's how dedicated (or crazy :)) I am to this band called Soundgarden and the members of that very same band. Below is what Marco Collins, the DJ for The End (one of my local radio stations), said after playing Sunshower (which I recorded on tape !). I forget the date......here it is, in it's entirety, word for word (I guess I AM crazy....): Marco Collins (after the playing of Sunshower): "Brand new from Chris Cornell from Soundgarden. If you didn't recognize that voice I'd say, uh...where the hell have you been hiding the last couple of years? Chris Cornell, solo stuff from a soundtrack that's gonna be in stores in the month of November. Sunshower is the name of that track. And what that speaks to me is *solo record*, *solo record*! Maybe we'll hear a solo record from Chris in 1998, lets keep our fingers crossed. You know, it's kinda cool, from the stuff that I've heard, that Chris does solo, compared to his work with Soundgarden...uh, it's...he's not afraid to pick up an acoustic guitar when he's playing solo. He's got a couple of tracks on the, um, Singles soundtrack and, I've heard a couple of other songs that he's done on his own, and it tends to be stuff...maybe it's because he writes on an acoustic guitar...tends to just, uh, be a bit more mellow, maybe not as hard sort of wall-of-sound as Soundgarden can be at times. I don't know, he may turn around and surprise us though. [raises voice] God, I would just kill to get that guy on the radio! [end raised voice] And have him play live, just him and an acoustic guitar, really stripped down, natural, just really...pure. Be awesome. Maybe I should work on that [laughs]....." By know you're probably thinking there is no point to posting this but a few days ago I heard on the same radio station (after they announced the recording of an Our Lady Peace performance at the radio station) that they have a lot of performers lined up to play. And a week before that I asked about the Chris performance at the radio station and one of the statio guys said 'they're working on it'. So maybe this CC solo performance WILL see the light of day???? Gotta remember to buy more blank tapes :).... While I was gone last week for the holiday, I only got to take one SG cd with me, so this time around I chose SU. While listening to Head Down, it occurred to me once again how much of a Pink Floyd influence I hear in that song. It sounds so much like the songs from their Meddle album. I know that Ben has said that he listened to early Floyd, and I think it really comes through in Head Down. Another song that pops into my head is Boot Camp. I think it sounds much more like Pink Floyd than the Beatles. If any of you are familiar with their Animals album, I think there is a strong correlation between Boot Camp and the Floyd's Dogs. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not saying that they ripped them off. SG is totally unique. But it's interesting (at least to me) to be able to pick out musical influences in certain songs. I'm not sure how many of you have the early Floyd albums, so I'm not sure this will go anywhere. What I would like to know is this: What about their other influences? I'm not very familiar with the older Punk bands that the guys were into. Do any of you see some direct influences in SG songs from some of those bands? What do y'all think?? Life Rules! My Father (a guitar guru) and myself both spotted this independently, and I think both those solos really rock in their melodic simplicity. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Nov 1996 13:43:51 -0600 From: Bill Flanders Subject: Re: the future of Mr. Solo Chris Cornell At 01:21 PM 11/29/97 -0500, rita wrote: >So Sunshower is just what I thought it would be, sap. If a crappy singer like Sammy Hagar can succeed on the charts, I think Chris can do it as well. I don't know about Chris' philosophy about writing songs, but I don't think he is completely oblivious to what people want. Say he writes about 40 songs for an album, he probably takes atleast a few of them that he thinks will get radio play and promote the album. This isn't to say he isn't genuine, only that commercial success is a factor in deciding what to put on an album, after he writes songs that he truly appreciates. I think the man could write any number of Black Hole Suns, or Hunger Strikes to keep his career alive. So, if it is his perogative to remain a commercial success, he will be able to do this. And I don't mind this interest in commercial appeal. If Soundgarden didn't have nationally distributed records would we even have a mailing list to discuss the band? Or a web site with hundreds of articles about them? I think its fine to select songs that will be popular at times. But I wouldn't be happy if Chris started writing songs for the radio, songs that appeal to us for a month at most and then fade out like a changing fashion. I don't think he'll cross that line. As far as anyone else's chances in a solo career. I think Kim could write some great songs if he got together with a good singer, but I don't think he himself has the personality that would attract the mass public to his music. I don't think Shepherd could do it because I doubt he would even care if his songs got radio play. Also, after 12 years of drumming for one of the most influential alternative bands, I think it would be weird for Cameron to become a *member* of another major band, almost an identity crisis. My thoughts. I would kill for a Kimster solo album. Even if it had no words, recieved no airplay, and no one but us Soundgarden junkies knew about it, I would love to see the Kimster release an instrumental album. I have no idea who he would get to play drums or bass but if you think this is a dumb idea, go listen to Dragon's Kiss by Marty Friedman. I think Kim's material would actually be better without vocals because he will never find another Chris so why settle for second best, just forget the words altogether. Wait a sec! Remember Exit Stonehenge? I personally am on the "That is Kim singing" side so I think it would be funny if he did another track like that where he just kinda yells funny stuff for 50 seconds. 'cause i had the whole day to waste with feelings of excitement and anticipation. a couple episodes of LUCY helped....all my nick@nite favorites too...could this evening get any better? ...believe me it did. as it turns out, i wasn't late...and saw the entire sets of both openers...now i regret not being a tad late....i'm sure that those of you who attended a show from their 96' tour can agree. i won't continue with the details of the rest of that night, since i've posted about it countless times... those who've paid attention know that they put on a great show...better than in 94', and that says a lot. though dec. 1st 96' will never happen again, i can still piece together special memories in what they played, wore and said offhandedly.. i can replay it over and over in my mind forever and ever....and i will...but it'll never be the same. -cats4kim ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Nov 1997 19:44:30 -0800 From: "S. So I pick up some street press and what do I see? A single review of the bleed together single?!?! Here is what they said anyway: Soundgarden - Bleed Together (A&M) Aah YES! The no-holds-barred vocal range of Chris Cornell is on display once again. I can't recall Soundgarden ever releasing a dud song, and you won't find one here. The drums and guitars work furiously from start to finish, and of course, the vocals complement the music perfectly to give it extra lift. The single is one of the tracks from the Soundgarden A-Sides LP which has just been released. So now are we in Aust. once again the lucky lot :) Has anyone been down the shop to check this out? I have been unable to get to a music store this week so I don't know if it's in there....let's hope so :) And if it is, I wonder why they like us aussies so much :) seeya Lee ***** DEF FX/ GARBAGE/ SOUNDGARDEN/ SONIC YOUTH/ RHCP/ SPIDERBAIT/ MAGIC DIRT/ ATARI TEENAGE RIOT/ REPUBLICA/ GRAVELRASH/ PEARL JAM/ FREE KITTEN/ ANGELFISH/ ICQ UIN: 1592130 http://student.uq.edu.au/~ar303921 "I'm sorry I was cruel, I forgot to kiss you..... During an interview with LAUNCH Chris says that he got the idea for the Pretty Noose video (the one with the band playing) off of a Pink Floyd German bootleg video he saw. In the PF video, the interviewer basically hated the band. Chris said he tried to recreate this as much as possible (with the help of Alian and Natasha from eleven.....you all know that :)). So I guess Chris does like Pink Floyd..... Rich- Heh heh, yeah I just told you this in your last e-mail but for those who don't know (and to those who already know sorry because I'm new here! :)) you could find some Kim Thayil feature guitar work on a CD called Smell the Fuzz: Guitars That Rule the World vol. 2. I believe Slash also does guitar work on there too.....
