I just picked up that Cristmas album today. Personally, I love the gothicness of the song, and Chris and Natasha sound great together. But hey - you already know this. But I do have to say that No Doubts song is the only one you can head bang to, and Rev. Run and the Christmas All-Stars deserve to be shot. Also, I saw in in a music shop th other day a guitar book entitled, "The Best Of Soundgarden" or something, with about 12-15 songs. 3 from LTL, 5 from BMF, and about 6 from Superunknown. All guitar solos etc. inclusive. I'll pick it up for anyone who wants it with one catch - it costs NZ $80, which ruffly works out to US $150 I think. Oh well, I'll be off now. See ya Dave :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 09:19:12 -0600 From: "J. Grotelueschen" <00058275@BIGRED.UNL.EDU> Subject: i lurk, therefore i am... Hi all... Grote here. (no, your eyes are not deceiving you) Actually, most of you probably don't even know who the heck I am. Let's just say I'm checking back in after a long somms vacation...hey hey to everyone from "da old school." Don't know why I got the proverbial "wild hair" and decided to post. I picked up A-sides last week. About cried doing it, for two reasons: 1) The architects behind this piece of work are, of course, no longer making music together 2) There's just something inherently insincere about a "greatest hits" collection, and I never even fathomed that I'd be picking up one featuring soundgarden. Still, there's certainly an element of convenience in having a single disc featuring "Bleed Together," "Flower," "Nothing to Say" and "Jesus Christ Pose," not to mention the other worthwhile tracks on it. But I would imagine I'm not alone in my preference for the lesser-heralded material that never saw the light of an industry rep's radio single-choosing day... (once again, hey to the "old school") Hence, I give you G-Sides ("grote sides" that is...my collection of the greatest, as it now stands...) Beyond the Wheel Flower Circle of Power Ugly Truth Big Dumb Sex Slaves and Bulldozers Searching with my Good Eye Closed Jesus Christ Pose Head Down Fresh Tendrils 4th of July Tighter and Tighter Show Me Boot Camp ...subject to change on a daily basis, of course... It's odd how I've found myself gravitating toward different aspects of SG's music at different stages of their musical tenure...obviously, there are notably different creative forces driving "circle of power" and "boot camp." Still, that's undoubtedly what I admired most about this band...that is, the ability to generate a distinctively "soundgarden" appeal within a wide array of songs that, structurally, have very little in common. Every SG song has that strange "darkmelodic" aura (some more than others, of course) that sets it apart from the rest of the world's musical fodder, yet there are dramatically different things going on, from a musical perspective... Well, that's all for now...I'm not resubscribing, so please direct any correspondence directly into my face at: 00058275@bigred.unl.edu OR jag@unlinfo.unl.edu Thanks and g'day...happy turkey holiday to one and all... (old schoolers, I'd love to hear from you) grote p.s. for those I haven't talked to in a while...China Digs (my band) is doing well...we've added a violin/fiddle/vox girl to our folk-rocky mix, and we're playing gigs in the Lincoln, Neb area. Our CD is out and available. Sorry, that was rather harsh, no? I do realize that Chris alone writes totally different from Chris of Soundgarden fame and I guess it's just a little hard for me to totally realize that Chris solo won't be Soundgarden revisited. Well I guess that's good in a way, just shows how diverse Chris is as musician, there is no doubt in my mind this man is a creative genuis. But where do you all think Chris' career as a solo artist will go? Maybe I'm sheltered, but I can barely think of 5 solo male "alternative" artists that have any sort of big career. Which makes me think that Chris' solo work probably will get airplay beyond the realm of Soundgarden-esque radio stations. He certainly has that star power thing to make it as a mainstream superstar, didn't the president of his own record company say upon SG's break up that CHris is poised for superstardom and the only thing that ever held him back was the fact that he was in a "metal band". Will Chris actually end up like Natalie Merchant???? good god, what a thought. I don't think it's anything he can control, if his songs appeal to a larger audience, there is nothing he can do, except maybe add a slaves and bulldozers-type scream and a fuck you in there to scare them off...damn it, there I go again, invoking the spirit of Soundgarden! OH well, I don't know what the point of this is, really, I'm rambling. It's just I'm terrified of the thought of Chris Cornell coming to town in the near future to do a show and my mother asking me if she can come too (she really digs ave maria and sunshower, get the picture?) that's not a knock to all the senior sommsters, it has nothing to do with age, but you see, mum also digs michael bolton and celine dion :-\ And another thing, I was at work talking about Soundgarden with someone who actually has heard of songs beyond Black Hole Sun, and this girl comes out of nowhere and starts freaking out and saying Chris Cornell is so "fucking solid" (?) I sat there and cringed, he is so much more than that, and I'm afraid that his radio-friendly music will attract more of her to him...before we had Kim and Ben to scare them away, now who is gonna do that? Maybe with all her new free time, Chris will bring Susan along with him on any tour he does, please please please. ~rita ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Nov 1997 14:11:25 -0500 From: Nick Boos Subject: Re: Wellwater Conspiracy Lance, Here is the story about WellWater Conspiracy.
