I have played guitar since '91 and I hope it becomes my job because i love it so much. Plus it helped me to cope when soundgarden broke up. Well, I wasn't really upset per say, just a bit bummed out because they rocked. But like i said I had a crutch to fall back on. What I think was meant by the "hasn't picked up a guitar since the breakup" meant is that he hasn't done anything serious. Because, speaking from personal experiance, one never just stops playing when it is that big of a part of life. Of course Kim may have just saw something cool on cable that he wanted to watch, and then it dominoed after that. *shrug* later dudes and dudettes, Ryan Moore ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 03:11:16 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: new, etc. Wow, Deb, that's pretty heavy about Kim. I don't know what else to say. And, Dave, what are you talking about? I have Superuninterview. I practically have it memorized. What Ben said is, "I have no ambitions for Soundgarden. I just take it as it comes." Meaning that he had no particular ambitions for them, no big goal in mind that they should be striving to reach. That's a whole lot different than not caring. He put a hell of a lot of work and energy into the band during that time period you're writing off. And while there are still a few Philistines among you who can't see it, DOTU is a wonderfully complex and well-crafted collection of songs. It is by no means the work of a band who didn't give a damn. Jen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 15:57:10 +1100 From: Jenkins Subject: I was just wondering... OK. Hey! Well, when I first heard it, and replayed it to my unbelievable attention span, I thought, well, Ben Shephard probably started the whole breakup thing, after all. It makes sense in a way. Take the 1996 tour. From SNL to Toronto Ben was just by himself really, nothing being fun about it. I could be wrong however, by a couple shows. But I really think it was a clash of egos that happpened. I read in "New Metal Crown", that SG had to hire a bodyguard to keep them away from EACH OTHER. I hope that is the right quote too. But I bet $100 to anybody here that they'll get back together in some way. I stake my life on it. I have been pretty quiet the last few weeks (no applause please) because all the moping and sadness was getting next to me. (Bad anniversary for me this time of year :((( ) So I have been sulking not even listening to SG too much. Than last night I had an hour drive home from a wake and to keep from being miserable I put in BMF, hit the gas pedal and jammed all the way !! It was great! I really love this band!!!!! BUTT than I get home read my mail and there is USDeb's post about Kim not touching a guitar for months. DON'T JUST TOUCH IT...PLAY IT, MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Turn the TV off....put the beer down!!! We are like starving children out here we need music!!!!! I miss the ratty TOOL shirt and Kimisms in interviews! WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Kim dear, if you are depressed come home and see your Mama for Thanksgiving....give me a call and I'll take you out for a beer........ we need to talk! toni ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 1997 20:51:19 -0600 From: Richard E Horner Subject: Re: new On Thu, 20 Nov 1997 19:13:43 -0500 Deborah Servey writes: >if anyone cares or wants to hear this...my best friend and I know Jeff >Gilbert, journalist, etc., and friend of Kim Thayil...he says Kimster >hasn't even touched a guitar since the break-up. reactions? > Well, umm theres two ways to look at this. Guitar playing tends to be addictive to many. I would play constantly if not for several factors: food, money, sleep, and my fingers falling off. I think it would be next to impossible for me to stop playing and I find it hard to see Kim not playing at all. BUT! My brother has played guitar for 20 years and he doesn't really play much anymore, he never really was a Kim Thayil though. I mean, he was good, recorded an album, and toured a ton of US army/navy/air force bases all over the world where he was playing for $$$, but he didn't have the ability or speed of the Kimster. I hope I surpass my bros achievements, i've been told (and I'm gonna sound like an ass, but I was really told this, AND it came from an actual guitar professional, not some schmo overcome by a few fast lines) that if I kept playing, I would "be a god". I'm starting to realize more things about guitar too. But enough about me because this is a SOUNDGARDEN list. What I'm trying to say is that I can't see Kim not playing guitar even once since April 9th. Hell, even my brother has played twice since then (both times when I got more guitars) :) Rich (mechanix on IRC) "I wield a ton of rage" Soundgarden, Metallica, Megadeth, Queensryche http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/4984 /\ /*/ /*/ . /*/ /*\ \*\ /*.*\ \*\ \/ \*\ \*\ /\ \*\ \*'*/ \*\ \*/ /*/ ' /*/ /*/ /_/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 18:18:56 -0500 From: Nadezhda Ball Subject: Chill out biscuits! Ohayo SOMMSters, I've been watching what y'all have been saying about the band's feelings towards each other....their friendship and shit. It seems to me that everyone is stating their opinion as a goddamn fact. Now I don't know for sure what the basis of the break up was, or who hates who, and if they do, but neither do you (oh a rhyme and shit). No one on this list, unless they are close friends with people from the band or Susan or whatever, knows what really went on, or how they are coping with it, if they are at all. So please state it as an opinion rather than your holyer than thou attitudes. It's ridiculous. And the rumor about them getting back together for a suprise show? Don't get yerselves all worked up. A girl was just reporting information to keep us happy, but then it turned into a fiasco. I know we're all yearning for any information about how they're doing, but don't create it. You act like you are really close friends to them, and apologies for people in advance who are close friends, and did not state it. Don't put words in their mouths and thoughts in our heads. Only they know what's going on. It's just like the interpitations, people on this list take things too literally, has anyone ever written anything? Is it completely literal? We don't know what anyone was thinking when they really wrote a song, all we know is that it is beautiful, and we can take it anyway we chose. Unless you are goddamn Chris Cornell or Matt fucking Cameron, then you can actually get into a fight with me about the meaning of a song. I guess all this rambling is to say if you live with Kim or Ben, then you can tell me how they feel, otherwise, state it as your humble opinion. You don't have to listen to me, but it would make things a hell of a lot clearer. Don't call me, I'll call you....Let's do lunch. Ciao!! DeZHy "if this isn't makin sense, it doesn't make it lies." Sure, it still hurts. But in a perverse >way, it gives me hope, and opens up a new chapter. This is what I'm talking about, people. Be clear. It's not perverse at all. If it gives you hope, and opens up a new chapter, then you've definitely hit a high point in reality. Crying won't bring the band back together. Neither will whining. And neither will being polite and asking or just shutting up about it entirely. Soundgarden broke up. They won't make any more albums as Soundgarden. And somebody else said... P.P.S. Hey, do you think Chris and Ben/Kim/Matt still talk to each other? Maybe, but you never can tell. I'd say it's pretty apparent that Matt and Ben still talk. I could speculate, but it's not my place. It's like trying to decide why Chris is a heroin addict and what songs prove it. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Nov 1997 13:51:35 +1300 From: Stuart Appleby Subject: hair hey someone said ages ago about chris maybe growing his hair long again, well i thought that this was a jim dandy, and i'm thinking why did no-one from here say anything, so how do we all feel about this? well, i think he shouldn't, even though he looked really cool with long hair, but he looks real cool with short hair, and he would have to go through that "awkward" stage, and i do not believe he wants to do that. from graham:) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 1997 22:33:44 -0500 From: Dave George-Cosh Subject: Bleed Together Lyrics Hey y'all Well, I was scanning the lyrics for Bleed Together and I noticed some extra stuff that I don't got on my CD. I was wondering if anyone has these parts and if so, could you make a .wav and send it so I can here it? Come away and come with me And come around and come and see And cover up and come along Before race before the calm And he walks out and fires the gun Happy with the things he won The head of God on the wall Ahead of us the heads of us Thanks..
