He checked with A&M and his distributor's information. Alas, it is not to be (unless A&M decides to change their minds, which I doubt). Judging from what Kim said, I think A-sides is designed to be "portable", and vinyl isn't portable. Jen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 00:28:18 -0800 From: J Thompson Subject: Some thoughts on A-Sides The U.S. release has "printed in the U.S.A." on the front and "disc made in U.K." on the back??? any idea why? Hey football fans.. check the photo to the right of the liner notes for Nothing to Say and Flower... Doesn't Matt look a lot like Denver QB John Elway? :-) The photos are excellent.... very cool that a Sommster (Jan) had his work published, congratulations! I read in a Guitar magazine today that all four members wrote down a list of songs they would like to see included, which is how they eventually combined and compromised to arrive at the 17 that became A-sides. Personally I don't think Get On the Snake was the best choice, Beyond the Wheel is much more deserving and I think most of you would agree on that one. Oh well, we went through that discussion already. Did anybody notice that Flower sounds better than it does on the UMOK release? I don't know that they cleaned up the mix any, but it is definitely louder than the original... meaning that if you listen to the first three tracks in a row, you won't notice much or any decrease in the volume of the music on Flower, whereas the original UMOK release was poorly mixed and at a low volume in comparison with other SG releases. just noticed Ty Cobb was published by Stupidditties (ASCAP), I suppose that's Bens' publishing company - I never noticed that on the DOTU credits if it was there. That's it for now, Later, J ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 21:27:19 +0000 From: Fiona Thiessen Subject: A-sides on *vinyl* Rohin Bhalla can anyone confirm for fact that A-Sides will *not* be released on vynil?? > actually show where it is stated from A&M or whoever that there will be no > issue on vynil I've posted this before but for anyone else who missed it .... It will only be on CD (unless things change at the last minute). Soundgarden is hoping to put out a more complete compilation of their b-sides, live songs, covers, and other rarities in the near future. We are hoping that we will be able to package that release in a way that will appeal to many collectors. I love the artwork and insert pictures. I thought the packaging was lovely(seeing pictures of my fave guys is always a joy to me) BUTT when I put it on at work(we have a nice stereo system and my co-worker was being co-operative and the boss was gone) I got three songs into and found myself strangely depressed. I turned it off! I just felt such strong emotions I couldn't listen to Soundgarden's swan song in that environment. I am home alone and I plan to listen today and whatever emotions the listening process evokes........ so be it! toni ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 10:02:38 -0600 From: Geoff Subject: A-side anomaly Hey everybody, A friend of mine who works at a record store told me that someone brought back a copy of A-sides because the disc contained some 60's hits including "Baby Love", instead of Soundgarden. It was the right disc with the wrong info burned on it...or was it? A conspiracy? Or did they think we would not know the difference? No wonder I was so depressed when I listened to it. Chris sounded like Darlene Love and I thought Matt and Ben's backup vocals were a little heavy on the ohhhhh and ahhhh's! I don't believe that Chris would accomplish so much and then put out a solo album with entirely acoustics on it. I mean, he is skilled enough that I think he will pick up his sticks again and hit some toms.. I also think that Chris will get some of his great musician buddies to make guest spots on his album.. you know.. a little help with the guitars and bass etc... Of course I'm not saying that he won't have acoustics because I kinda did make that noticeable in my first sentence.. I mean, of course he might have a few acoustics, but I also predict that on this album we will see a little "I scratch your back; you scratch mine" where Chris might have Natasha and Alain doing some stuff on it. He might even do instrumental tracks.. who knows.. Since Chris is unpredictable, we'll just have to be greatly surprised :) - Maria "Ben rules." - Matt Cameron ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 16:10:20 -0500 From: Alissa Corsi Subject: Re: Cornell released In a message dated 97-11-05 15:23:29 EST, you write: << Does anyone know the exact date? That means that we can safely stop guessing at its release date and just wait until it shows up on an A&M chart or as a CD in your favorite store. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 17:50:05 -0500 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Flyin' Traps Hey SOMMSters out there far and wide (I don't mean anyone's weight....) Well, FINALLY after so much trouble and hassle that I went through, and the record store woman went through, I got Flyin' Traps! Thank God (Matt)! You guys absolutely have no clue how much I went through to get this album. It took a few phone calls from the record company and things still were a little crooked. I was supposed to get it 3 weeks ago, but like I said, things were crazy.. Why? Well, not a damn soul has heard of this stellar album. That sux, but I have it and I just have two words for it: Kick Ass That album is so kick ass! Matt and Taz are the first track. It's called "Theme From Wrong Holy-o" and it's 1:51 mins. Quite short, but none of the tracks are that long anyways, but theirs is the shortest. I wasn't like, "impressed", like it was the absolute outta this world thing Matt has ever done, but I was impressed. I thought it was kewl. I mean, it was the best chance for me to hear Matt clearly. I liked that he worked with Taz Bentley, but I'm not sure who's who on the set, but I have my assumptions. I heard a clip of their song awhile ago at the website of Hollywood Records and I heard these guitars and etc and was kinda upset because i thought it would be just them. So I get the cd and I read it and listen to the song and I find out that Matt and Taz are the only ones doing this song! That's rad! Matt is on drums and guitar and Taz is on drums and bass. Matt's guitaring is basic riffs, you could say. I mean, he's not pulling any Kim's (if you know what i mean) because this is, afterall a drum compilation. It's a real catchy tune and I just love it. Taz's bass matches Matt's guitaring and of course he sounds kewl. I have to admit that i did expect more from the whole project. I thought it was only Matt and working with Taz was actually a pretty neat idea, so I thought that was ok. I actually thought that the whole album was drum tracks, but when I think about, isn't that boring? It can be, but I actually wouldn't mind a Matt Cameron drumming cd with tips and stuff..maybe a few tracks :) But it was actually better than what I thought it would be like at first, so I am very happy with it. The sounds are so diverse because of the wide range of drummers. It's one of the best compilations out there! I am, of course, bringing this into class so that we can hear it. My percussion teacher thought it sounded soo kewl and he really wants to hear it.. Besides, my class can get another dosage of Matt Cameron!!! YAY!!! I am once again proud of my Matt! I will always be proud of his accomplishments because he's so damn talented!! Keep up the great work, baby!! Later, my SOMMS buddies! - Maria: the Matt Cameron Hootchie Princess "For some of the faster songs, I'd put a pillow inside the bass drum." - Cameron ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Nov 1997 17:10:47 -0500 From: Matt Artis Subject: Some idiot and a SG Convert.... I hope it's on my b-day >> > >damn. better your birthday than mine.... (september 15) I'd Well, two things to say. I doubt it will be released on Feb 4th because records USUALLY come out on Tuesday and Feb 4th 1998 doesn't fall on teusday, September 15th does, but I still doubt it. Anyway, onto the content part -> I really doubt Chris is gonna do a lot of acoustic stuff (maybe one or two songs). I think its really random. He doesn't target his writing (I don't think). And (from the Guitar Player interview for SUPERUNKNOWN) Chris tells the story of some dude saying to him "I really like that song Seasons, you should write more songs like that" and Chris tells how he just wanted to say "and you should shut the fuck up because I hate you, why should I write songs just for you?" but of course he didn't 'cause he's not all evil. I think Chris will just put what he thinks sounds the best (to HIM) on there, maybe that includes some acoustic trax, maybe not. QUESTION!! I have only seen the Soundgarden videos for the releases off SU, DOTU and I've seen Loud Love. What I want to know is, do any of SGs earlier videos (as in before SU) end with...umm...I think its fire, or some kind of large spinning thing, maybe the guys were in the shot too, with the fire and the spinning thing, maybe not. Maybe it wasn't fire, maybe it was just really brightly colored background?!?!?! Ok, so you're wondering why I'm asking. Well, because I was thinking back to the FIRST time I saw the word Soundgarden. I remembered it was when I flipped the channel to MTV and this unknown SG video was ending. I wanna find this clip (and I don't have modem time to download all the vids from Seth's, most of which aren't complete vids).
