Unfortunantly I only have a small bit of this accomplished. The only album I have from every country is DOTU... US Version, Japan Version, German Version, and last but definitely not least because it includes a bonus cd "Down Under On The Upside"...The Australian Version..which I bought in Sydney personally!!!!!!!(on vacation) Ok, enough of my babbling! I was reading Music News of the World today, and they have a news flash about Susan's retirement and Chris' new management. The addie is http://www.addict.com/MNOTW/lofi/971104/971104_1726.shtml It's nice to finally have some actual quotes. Here's what it said: After 18 years of managing some of the biggest bands in the Pacific Northwest, including Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, Susan Silver has decided to "downsize" her clientele. She will no longer manage her husband (and former Soundgarden singer) Chris Cornell. "Basically, I wanted to simplify my life and have some time off," said Silver, whose management clientele list includes Soundgarden (even through the band broke up earlier this year, there is still plenty of business to attend to), Sponge, Tuatara, Alice in Chains and the Fairfield Four. Since last week's low-key announcement, Cornell has changed management companies and is now being managed by his old friend, former Offspring manager Jim Guerniot, head of Time Bomb/Deconstruction Records. Soundgarden, who were managed for more than 10 years by Silver, announced their break-up earlier this year. Guerniot confirmed that he was taking over management of Cornell, a friend for over a decade, but said he preferred not to comment further on the matter. Guerniot, formerly an executive at A&M Records, is credited with helping to sign and nurture the band's career at A&M. He subsequently became close with Cornell and Silver, he added, during his tenure at the label, which ended in July of 1994. Guerniot has managed power-punkers Social Distortion for 14 years and was previously manager of SoCal alt-rockers Offspring. "If I wouldn't have done this now, the first six months of next year would have been so incredibly busy, with five records coming out, I wouldn't have been able to think about anything like this for 12-24 more months," she said, referring to impending releases by Tuatara, Sponge, the Mayfield Four and solo debuts from AIC guitarist Jerry Cantrell and Cornell. "It was either now or two years from now." Silver, who was in the management business for 18 years, starting out with such legendary Northwest bands as the U-Men, Black Outs and Screaming Trees, said she was "grateful to have been of service to my clients and the music industry." Silver's office will remain open so she can continue to administer any future Soundgarden or Alice in Chains releases, she said, and "possible music-related projects in the future." However, the end of the year will mark her effective retirement from the business. She said it has not been established who would take over management of her other clients and their various solo projects. Cantrell is still working on a solo record expected for an early 1998 release and Cornell is currently working writing and demoing songs for his solo debut, also expected for a 1998 release. Gil Kaufman Life Rules! Dagny ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 17:07:06 -1200 From: Kris Subject: A-sides/artwork A-sides is pretty good. I bought it yesterday at NRM Music for $15. I only got it because it for "Bleed Together", the artwork, and just because, after all, it is a SG album. "Bleed Together" kicks ass! I had only heard it once before on the radio. And.... did anyone notice that Jan van Oldenmark's photo of Matt is in the liner notes? Seth has it on his page under the photo section. I saw that pic on Seth's site a while back. SETH- I have two questions for you. #1-Is Jan a guy or girl? #2- Did he/she tell you that that pic would be on the album? They would have had to ask his/her permission to use it on the album. oh yeah, one other thing. Is Jan a professional photographer or an amature? He/she with with some big name photographers like Charles Peterson and Michael Lavine. That's great that he/she got credited for that pic. I REALLY love it! It's a great photo of Matt. Enough babbling..... bye! Kris Hermansen- "Soundgarden fanatic, i think?" Jan van Oldenmark is a pro, and yes, he told me that one of his photos of Matt had been selected to appear in the A-Sides liner notes. For those of you who have no idea what we're talking about, check out Jan's SG work at http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/images/jan/ - you'll probably hear directly from him about this anyway, since he's on the list. -seth ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 17:23:17 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: take a walk on the A-side I have to admit to intense excitement at viewing the release section on Seth's page last night. I prayed for no delays in getting mine. Jay, my record store bud, called this morning before I was even out of bed, so I high-tailed it downtown. He also gave me a beautiful double sized fold-out two-sided promo flat with the cover art on one side and a lovely black and white group shot on the back! Says he has some more related stuff for me too, but it's at his house. Anyway, the pictures inside the booklet are lovely (and I dig that hand thing, too). Though the sessions are familiar ones it is nice to have "other" images from them instead of a rehash of what we've seen before. And that live pic of Ben is pretty fucking cool. How can I complain about an album that gives me such nice visuals? Well, I guess my biggest complaint is that maybe the sequencing isn't the best. The first 3 flow nicely, after that it tends to be either jarring or disorienting. Even I'm not anal enough to insist on it being chronological, and I think it could have been done more smoothly without disturbing the chronology TOO much. That, and I don't know why they put Get On the Snake on there (imo one of their weaker tracks) and sacrificed My Wave (much more a quintessential SG song, and more single-y feeling too). All in all I guess I'm happy to have any crumbs I can get. Sure hope there's more to follow. Jen ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 18:02:48 -0500 From: Nadia Standard Subject: Re: Comments from Susan and Jim Guerniot So, let me get this straight. Chris IS planning to release a solo album in 1998? If this is true, I wonder what kind of album it would be. Maybe an accoustic album. I could see it now. What do you guys think? "Total fucking godhead-live!" the original pretty noose ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 18:15:40 -0500 From: Nadia Standard Subject: Crown of Thorns Yes, I have picked up A-sides and I love the liner notes John wrote. It is so true. Since I'm reading New Metal Crown (thanx to Tracy!) it just seems so relevant, and so real. When I was reading the liner notes, I had tears in my eyes. Ya, I know, it wasn't that sad. It just hit me again that this IS the LAST ROUND. After this, what else is there? They are gone, and this is what's left. People who don't know any better will take it as their "greatest hits", which really isn't true. After all, the "greatest hits" is what fans think are their favorite songs. Isn't that the truth? People who just see them as some "monopolized-rock" band will see this record as "some bunch of songs thrown together with Black Hole Sun." That's the real sad part about it all. "....but I'm on my way, on my way...." The original pretty noose ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 18:31:55 -0600 From: Barbarba Strong Subject: only if you're interested... For those of you who haven't picked up A-Sides yet, or those who have strong opinions against buying it at all, I thought I'd share with you the liner notes. I think this says something we can all agree on for a change. Beloved consumer, Pardon me for my lack of tact. While applauding your estimable, undeniable good taste at having purchased this album, I am troubled by the notion that there will inevitably be a few of you who'll consider this "the best of Soundgarden". As an original, diehard 'garden fans I ask you: how can one possibly fit all of the coolest stuff on to one album? It simply can't be done. What you have here is something tantamount to a Cliff Noted version of the 'garden's oeuvre. Admittedly, it's pretty rad. You can't go wrong with the heaviness of "Nothing To Say" or the psychosis-inducing drama of "Jesus Christ Pose". I personally favor the bleak lyricism of "The Day I Tried To Live". And "Blow Up The Outside World"? It should be declared the new national anthem. Back in the mid-80's, as a two-bit, off-night booking agent at a beloved swill hole in Seattle, Wa., I had the mind-shredding experience of watching a baby Soundgarden grow up in public. Chris looked like some dusted jock prone to losing his shit and hurting people. Kim stood distractedly, almost meditatively, coaxing violent and hallucinogenic noise from a trashed SG. Original bass player Hiro unfurled the signature 'garden groove with primal authority. It was, in the words of my quotable partner, Bruce Pavitt: "Total fucking godhead-live". As thrilling and ominously present as they were in those early years, the understated intelligence, confidence and ingenuity that became the 'garden's trademark emerged with nonparell grace over the course of five studio albums. Driven by Matt and Ben's taught rythmic interplay, latter-day Soundgarden albums always mixed brawn with brilliance. Chris and Kim, the two remaining original Soundgarden members, became the twin totems of this road-friendly tribe. But even though their releases eventually sold millions the world over, Soundgarden always seemed to be under-recognized; the perennial place in a hype-driven race to oblivion. That they retired with dignity and precious little fanfare is almost quaintly anachronistic - if not downright eccentric - in today's burly world of pop hysteria. What's left is the crafted work; expressionistic pop songs that exude wariness, compassion and restlessness. Besides being staple fare of "modern rock" radio and MTV, these hits document the times that we live in... and the lives that we lead. So here you go, fellow traveller. You got "Outshined", "Spoonman" and "Black Hole Sun" and the other essentials of a Soundgarden "Greatest Hits" package. It's a fitting introduction for the novice and a welcome addition for the ardent fan.
